SIXTEENTH SUNDAY IN ORDINARY TIME

JULY 23, 2017

First Reading: Wisdom 12:13, 16-19

This passage from the Book of Wisdom addresses itself to God, giving praise and thanksgiving for his mercy.

Second Reading: Romans 8:26-27

Paul indicates that since people are, in general, unaccustomed to the manner of praying, of speaking directly to God, the Holy Spirit will intercede for them.

Gospel: Matthew 13:24-43

According to Matthew, Jesus speaks of the “reign of God” in three parables: the man who soweth good

seed, the mustard seed, and the yeast. In each parable, Jesus demonstrates that once the “reign of

God” had been established, it grew and spread.

RENEW AND REBUILD CAMPAIGN Please do not hesitate to request a personal meeting with either myself or Deacon Jim Maher. Our time is your time and we would be very happy to answer any questions you may have about your gift or pledge. Many thanks to all who have, thus far, committed themselves to our parish capital campaign. Your financial sacrifices are greatly appreciated by me, your pastor and your parish will benefit greatly through your gifts and the ongoing redemption of your pledges. I anticipate our first and most urgent project, the complete replacement of our church heating and air conditioning system will be scheduled for the early fall. As many of you may know, we have been encountering a number of costly breakdowns over the past few weeks and those of you attending some of our weekday and Sunday masses know, first hand, how fickle our aging system can be. Thank you for your patience. On Commitment Sunday, back on June 25th, a number of you indicated that you were still praying on your commitment. Now, a month later, I have asked the members of our campaign committee to begin contacting you about you may be able to do for our five year Renew and Rebuild capital campaign. These are your fellow parishioners who have been working tirelessly with Deacon Jim and myself for your good and that of our beautiful parish. I ask that you please give them a polite hearing whatever your final decision may be. Thank you and God bless you. Prayerfully in Christ, Msgr. Emmet Nevin Pastor _____________________________________________

R. C. I. A. Are you someone who has come to some knowledge of Jesus Christ and who is attracted, in some way, to become a member of our Catholic Church? Are you willing to invest some time each week to learn about the Catholic faith, to ask questions and to receive some informative answers? Are you willing to work with us in getting you prepared to receive the Sacraments of Initiation (Baptism, Holy Communion and Confirmation) at our annual Easter Vigil Mass on Saturday evening, March 31st? (Private reception may also be arranged.) RCIA provides an opportunity for candidates to consider what God is saying to them in the Scriptures, what changes in their life they need to make to respond to God’s inspiration, and what Baptism in the Catholic Church means. Are you someone who was already baptized a Catholic but who, for whatever reason, never received the sacraments of Holy Communion and/or Confirmation but would now like to be prepared to receive these sacraments? RCIA provides an opportunity for you to be brought into full communion with the Catholic Church. If you answered YES to any of these questions, please contact us clergy and let us know of your interest. We are moving forward with plans to start up an RCIA program this fall and we would love to have you join us. Please call the Saint Aedan parish office at 845-735-7405 or email us at [email protected] and someone will get back to you. _____________________________________________

ANOINTING OF THE SICK Anticipating an upcoming surgery and/or a hospital stay? Undergoing treatments for a serious health condition? Are the years starting to weigh heavily on you and you’d like some divine assistance in your ongoing daily efforts? Please ask to receive the sacrament of the Anointing of the Sick before or after daily or Sunday mass or right here at the rectory. You may even request a date to be anointed right in your own home. Please don’t put it off. Let one of your parish priests know and we would be happy to give you this beautiful and outward sign of God’s healing love.. (Your priests and deacon would also like to keep you in our prayers.)

The world was a playground for Mickey, a naive Irish American kid bored with his life. His father served in World War II, his brother was a Marine in Vietnam; now it was his turn. His 365 days in Vietnam builds in torment until an attack on a bunker complex in Cambodia. Wounded, his friend captured, he becomes a tormented survivor knowing he is always just a heartbeat from death.

In this memoir, set as deeply in his mind as in the Southeast Asian jungle, a young American soldier embarks

on a journey to a war that, for him, will never be over.
