We came here because we wanted to hike and ski in the mountains and paddle on Washington’s wild rivers and coastline. We wanted to raise our daughter in a beautiful place, with friends who understood both the uniqueness and fragility of what this community has to offer. We found some place special. And of course, one very special attribute here is the land! Paddling along Teddy Bear Cove and Clark’s Point, tide-pooling at Lily Point, hiking on any number of properties along the Nooksack – what a great way to see first-hand just how wonderful Whatcom County is. Over the past year, there have been great examples of how individuals, families, and businesses have partnered with Whatcom Land Trust (WLT) to show their love for living here: • Heirs of Mary Lea (Fisken) and Everett Griggs graciously donated to Whatcom Land Trust their family’s 80-acre tract in the shadow of Mount Baker along the banks of Clearwater Creek. • With your support, we were able to improve our Riverstead and Samish River Headwaters Reserves by planting trees and removing invasive species. With volunteers and partners we protected and expanded existing properties, and increased opportunities for the public to visit and enjoy many of those areas identified on the map: • The Stimpson Family and the Rotary Club of Bellingham worked with WLT to improve and expand the popular Stimpson Family Nature Reserve, now more than 350 acres. • We support the draft recreation plan for 8,844 acres protected in the Lake Whatcom Watershed (light green on the map) because this was a once-in-a- lifetime opportunity and a great deal for all of Whatcom County. This parkland will provide more than 54 miles of hiking, biking, equestrian and running trails – all within a 10-mile radius of nearly 60 percent of the county’s total population. In the coming year, Whatcom Land Trust will work to insure that more of our community can enjoy “wild” closer to home. We look forward to increasing protection for the special lands that provide recreation, solitude, fish and wildlife habitat, and the agricultural products and heritage that make Whatcom County so special. A good start is the more than 13,000 acres protected by WLT and managed by Whatcom County Parks. Please visit and enjoy these areas. None of this happens without you! WHATCOM LAND TRUST MAP/DECEMBER 2015

Research indicates that time in nature is essential to optimal child development. WLT and Whatcom County Parks and Recreation provide this essential “nutrient” for generations to come.

WLT Preserves to Visit

Whatcom County ParksQQ

The mission of Whatcom Land Trust is to preserve and protect wildlife habitat, scenic, agricultural and open space lands in

Whatcom County for future generations by securing interests in land and promoting land stewardship.

A VERY PRODUCTIVE PARTNERSHIP

“Conservation for the community, by the community…” These words appear on the new sign at the Stimpson Family Nature Reserve. They summarize Whatcom Land Trust’s work for the past 31 years. WLT has many partners, but nowhere are these community conservation values clearer than in our ongoing partnership with Whatcom County Parks and Recreation. WLT and County Parks have collaborated with land donors and land sellers to protect fourteen county parks and reserves. As a result of the community collaborations, you and yours are welcome to enjoy rich marine reserves at Lily Point and Point Whitehorn, an old-growth forest above Canyon Lake, salmon-bearing waterways at Deming Homestead Eagle Park and the future South Fork Park, a gentle stroll at Jensen Family Forest, or rigorous hikes on the trails in the North Chuckanut network.

Clearwater Creek. Wild. Rugged. Beautiful. Clear and cold.

STATS

WLT holds 77 conservation easements on 6,473 acres

WLT owns 84 properties totaling 4,009 acres

WLT has facilitated protection of 10,154 acres

WLT has protected 13,857 acres of public park land

THE STIMPSON FAMILY NATURE RESERVE GROWS! A FOREST CONSERVED

Long-time WLT supporters know well the story of how the Stimpson family gift of 116 acres in the year 2000 grew quickly to more than 300 acres through the collaboration of half a dozen private and public partners. Last spring there was more to celebrate: the family donated another twenty acres just as trailhead upgrades funded by the Rotary Club of Bellingham were completed. More community partners pitched-in to commemorate the moment, providing expert naturalist interpretation to the reserve’s visitors.

This is Whatcom Land Trust at its best. Working with landowners to manifest their conservation values, acting as the central cog in complex collaborations, pursuing projects that provide multiple benefits—conserving habitat, providing places where children can explore forests and streams, protecting a crucial watershed and bringing a community together to celebrate it all.

PROTECTING THE NATURE OF WHATCOM COUNTY

Mary Lea Griggs (1901-1981) was a singular woman. She was a wife, mother, and national authority in woodland conservation. In 1965, the state Inter-Agency Committee for Outdoor Recreation recognized her for her contributions to forest management education. That year, she was the first woman to receive a US Forest Service Smokey Bear Award. In 1967 she became the first woman offered an honorary membership in the Society of American Foresters.

When Mary Lea’s heirs approached Whatcom Land Trust about donating a forest parcel she had been fond of, WLT was thrilled to become part of her legacy. The 80-acre property along Clearwater Creek hosts a second-growth forest tucked away in the rough country of the Middle Fork drainage. Only the most intrepid hikers are likely to visit, but it is bear, bobcat, and bull trout heaven. Whatcom Land Trust is pleased to help protect one of Mary Lea’s beloved forests.

WLT’s work benefits all the inhabitants of Whatcom County. “When we consider the social capital of a community, why do we include only one species?” -Richard Louv (Mark Turner, Photographer)
