MATERIALS CHECKLIST:

BEFORE YOU START: Photocopy the following: ! Draft Law Template (1 per student) ! Pitch Structure Template (1 per student)

Crisis Point DVD in player cued to Commission video. Arrange the Security Passes into 10 piles relating to their committee. Also bear in mind that the class will be divided into 10 small groups (of 3 or 4 depending on class size) and will need a suitable working space.

STAGE 2: THE COMMISSION PROPOSESIntroduction

Page 2: STAGE 2: THE COMMISSION PROPOSES Introduction€¦ · oups (of 3 or 4 depending on class size) and will need a suitable working space. STAGE 2: THE COMMISSION PROPOSES Introduction

Have the 10 piles of Security passes laid out in front of you and have one student at a time take a different pass.

The students are now European Commissioners, and every commissioner has an area of responsibility.

Divide the class into their 10 groups according to their area of responsibility as identi!ed on their Security Passes. Allow a few minutes for them to meet & greet each other.

Play the video of the President of the Commission.

Hand out each group the relevant Research Dossier, which includes their Draft Law Proposal and the Pitch Structure Templates. These all correlate to the Area of Responsibility on the groups’ Security Passes. i.e. European Budget & Spending should have the Close Non Essential Business Proposal & Research Dossier. They are all colour coded to help.

Each group needs to read and discuss the information. Firstly the Proposal, as this is the line they need to take, then from the information in the Research Dossiers students need to put together a pitch, to back up their Proposal.

They will then present their pitch to the rest of the class. Each group will need a nominated speaker. Not all the information is useful and it needs to be gathered to back up their proposal.

After the pitches have been presented a class vote should be taken on the favourite. You cannot vote for yourself and it should be made clear that the winning idea will be the one that represents the whole class in a bigger pitch at the end of the day, in which all the classes will compete with each other to offer the best proposal.

Now the winning proposal has been decided the class as a whole should write up the Draft Law Template. This will go forward to the next stage and be presented to the Parliament.

Collect everything in.

Play the Survivor Quiz if spare time available.

Break for lunch. 1 hour.

What does this graph reveal about the importance of border controls in a pandemic?

The BLUE blocks represent the TOTAL number of new diseases recorded in a five year period. The

GREEN blocks show how many of these new diseases have been imported from outside the borders.

Imported New Diseases:

Impact of spread of disease on rate of spread

It is often assumed that the number of people infected with a contagious disease directly affects how fast that disease spreads. The chart above shows how the rate of a disease’s spread is related to the number of people infected:

All of our models show the same basic characteristics of virus spread. One key thing we found is that there is an ‘epidemic threshold’ – a line above which a virus may spread,

and below which it cannot. If the birth rate of a virus is greater than its death rate, the virus has a chance to spread successfully, although it may die out before it spreads much. If the virus does manage to get a foothold, it will start to rise slowly in prevalence. This could make stopping the disease from reaching a ‘critical mass’ an important step in combating the pandemic.

HOW TO PLAYDivide the class into 2 teams. Distribute the passports from stage 1 equally between the teams.

Ask the questions overleaf.

Let the ! rst team to ! nd the answer from the information on the passport put their hands up and answer the question for their team. For every right answer, award the team a point. However, if a question is answered incorrectly, one team member must ‘be quarantined’ meaning they cannot answer any more questions. Play until one team has no more players left. The winning team is the survivors.
