THE ARTS January – June 2020

Director: Naomi Jones2019 marks an important milestone in the history of Oundle School: thirty years since girls first donned their culottes and made their way eagerly across the cobbled courtyard of Cloisters to lessons. We therefore open the Stahl’s spring season with a New House production of This Changes Everything by Joel Horwood. The piece, specially commissioned by Tonic Theatre to provide greater gender equality in new plays for young people, tells of a completely new society set up by a group of pioneering young women as a response to the failures of established governments. In it we see a collection of politically engaged women determined to change the world, and this seems a fitting way to mark thirty years of co-education at Oundle.

The season will be brought to a close by an exciting ‘play in a day’ event. Written, directed and performed by Old Oundelians from across the decades, this newly commissioned piece will offer a fascinating perspective on the past, whilst maintaining a keen eye on what is to come.

In February, our highly talented Fifth and Sixth Forms perform Peter Shaffer’s modern masterpiece, Amadeus. With live accompaniment from Oundle School Orchestra and a highly inventive ensemble performance style, the piece promises to be an explosion of music and mystery.

The Arsonists in March, directed by Simon Aylin, is a taut political satire by Swiss dramatist Max Frisch, adapted by Alistair Beaton. Performed by the Third and Fourth Forms, you can expect razor-like wit and

increasingly manic energy as the mundane turns into the absolutely surreal.

This year’s eagerly awaited First and Second Form production is the utterly charming Honk! Written and composed by George Stiles and Anthony Drewe, this uplifting musical celebrates uniqueness and the importance of being yourself. With toe-tapping tunes and adorable characters, it is the perfect entertainment for a summer’s evening.

The School season is supplemented by two professional performances. Luke Wright returns with The Remains of Logan Dankworth. Part poet, part comedian and part political commenter, Luke’s unique take on contemporary society is always illuminating, provocative and hugely entertaining.

Silent Uproar has been taking its country by storm with its irreverent style of performance, inspired by movies and pop-culture. In April, this award-winning company makes its first visit to Oundle with its climate change musical Thank You for Doing Nothing.

From classic texts to new plays, music, comedy, musical comedy and poetry, it is, as ever, an eclectic mix here at the Stahl this season. We hope to welcome you to a performance soon.

THE ARTS January – June 2020Bookings 01832 277300 www.stahltheatre.co.uk

A group of young women has mysteriously disappeared.

Unbeknownst to their families or police, they have abandoned the

established societies in which they were raised, with the aim of creating a new civilisation on a platform way

out at sea. Motivated by their shared disillusionment with capitalism and government’s failure to address the

causes of climate change, these girls set up The Community. Its objective is to discover a new way to live, but

can you change the world by removing yourself from it? And what happens when the old world comes to visit?

Originally commissioned by Tonic Theatre as a response to the lack of

female roles in plays for young people, Joel Horwood’s taut and provocative

script is highly topical. In this, the thirtieth year of co-education at

Oundle, what better way to open the 2020 season than with a performance

from the girls of New House?

‘Be more concerned with your character than your reputation, because your character is what you really are, while your reputation is merely what others think you are.’ John WoodenTaking this as a basis for the evening, our A level pupils complete a series of four different performances from texts which are both published and devised by pupils. The A level Theatre Studies evening is always a highlight of the spring season. It offers a unique opportunity to see some of Oundle’s most talented performers in scripted pieces and work devised from a stimulus provided by the exam board. Wide-ranging in both subject matter and style, this year’s offerings promise to be as enthralling and thought-provoking as ever.

In the court of the Austrian Emperor Joseph, Antonio Salieri is the established

composer. Enter the greatest musical genius of all time, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart. Salieri has given himself to God so that

he might realise his sole ambition to be a great composer, whereas Mozart is a foul-

mouthed, graceless oaf who has that which is beyond Salieri’s envious grasp: genius.

Performed by pupils from the Fifth to the Upper Sixth Form, with support from the

School Orchestra, this promises to be a sumptuous evening, part psychological drama and part concert. At its heart is

a fascinating true story based on the genuine ‘confessions’ of Antonio Salieri,

who claimed at the end of his life to have murdered his competitor Wolfgang

Amadeus Mozart.

Fires are becoming something of a problem, but Biedermann has it all under control. He is a respected member of the community with a loving wife and a flourishing business, so surely nothing can get to him. The great philanthropist is happy to meet his civic duty by giving shelter to two new guests, but when they start filling his attic with petrol drums, will he help them light the fuse? Max Frisch’s parable about appeasement was described by the author as a ‘morality play without a moral’. Written in 1953 and originally based on the Communist takeover of Prague, the play is as relevant now as it ever was. This is a jet black comedy that stays with you long after you’ve stopped laughing.

CO-COMMISSIONED BY NORWICH ARTS CENTRE, NATIONAL CENTRE FOR WRITING, COLCHESTER ARTS CENTRE AND FREEDOM FESTIVAL

I believed that Fukayama line: the end of history. But history didn’t end, did it?Logan Dankworth, columnist and Twitter warrior, grew up romanticising the political turmoil of the 1980s. Now, as the EU Referendum looms, he is determined to be in the fray of the biggest political battle for years. Meanwhile, Logan’s wife Megan wants to leave London to create a better life for their daughter. As tensions rise at home and across the nation, something is set to be lost forever.

The third of Fringe First and Stage Award Winner Luke Wright’s trilogy of political verse plays looks at trust and privilege in the age of Brexit.

“Luke Wright’s performances rumble with rage, passion and humour. They are also peppered with brilliantly smart observations. You will leave his show brimming with energy, heart pounding and brain whirring.” The Guardian

THANK YOU FOR

‘The year is 2099 and everything is brilliant…

If you’re a goddamn winner.’In the near future, so-called ‘global warming’ has apparently affected most of

Britannia’s drinking water – if you want to believe the opinions of 99% of experts and

their so-called ‘science’.

But fear not: our hero and lobbyist for the Big Water Corporation, Molly Pazgan, is

here to tell you that everything is fine. This satirical musical is a hilarious night out like

no other, exploring the climate emergency and those who that profit from it.

Inspired by 80s sci-fi, satirical comedy and sobering climate change research.

Perfect for fans of Bladerunner, American Psycho and musicals with a political edge.

Music by George Stiles Book and Lyrics by Anthony Drewe

Directed by Simon Aylin Stiles and Drewe’s musical, Honk!, is a delightful and award-winning

adaptation of one of the world’s most beloved fables. Ugly looks quite a bit different from his darling duckling brothers and sisters. The other animals

on the farm are quick to notice and point this out, despite his mother’s protective flapping. Feeling rather foul about himself, the little fowl finds

himself on an adventure of self-discovery, all the while unknowingly outwitting a very hungry cat. Along the way, Ugly meets a whole flock of unique

characters and finds out that different is not such a bad thing to be. With its bouncing score and universal story, this touching musical has plenty of heart.

Winner of multiple awards, including the 2000 Olivier Award for Best Musical, this heart-warming celebration of being different is sure to delight audiences

of all ages with its sparkling wit and memorable score.

In September 1990, the composition of Oundle School changed forever. For the first time in its four-hundred-year history, young women joined their male counterparts and boys no longer ruled the roost! To mark this momentous event, we invite the Stahl stars of yesteryear back to create a ‘Play in a Day’.

Written, performed and directed by Old Oundelians in one day only, this piece promises to have just the right balance of reminiscence and wit. Join us for this important celebration of co-education, both here at Oundle and in its broader educational context.

Director: Mr Quentin Thomas The next two terms are tremendous ones of opportunity for the Music department. We have tours venturing to Prague at Easter to offer music alongside the History trip; to the Far East (Macau, Bangkok and Singapore) to embrace our friends, parents and OO communities there; and to open the incredible Montreux Jazz Festival with our two jazz bands in the summer. This is a prestigious line-up and we are fortunate to have such a strong department with outstanding staff who nurture our vast number of committed and highly skilled pupil musicians. In many ways, the following pages speak for themselves,

though I wish to point out the incredible scale of diverse ensembles operating here at such impressive levels, allowing us a plethora of events that feature proper, top drawer repertoire.

I truly hope you might join us for many of the events offered, perhaps as the audience or as a performer on the stage. Please read carefully: there is much compacted into the pages that follow!

Derived from the Latin completorium, Compline, Night Prayer, or the Prayers at the End of the Day is the final church service of the day in the Christian tradition of canonical hours.

Needless to say, in this day and age of relentless pressure and speed, this is a beautiful moment to stand, stare and reflect. St John Passion – JohAnn Sebastian Bach (1685 - 1750) with Oundle and District Choral Society, Oundle School Choirs and Oundle Consort Monday 23 March Venue: Chapel Performance: 7.45pm Tickets: £8 from Oundle Festival Box Office, free for all children under 18

From 1723 until his death, Bach was employed as Kantor at the Thomasschule in Leipzig. It was a prestigious but demanding post, requiring him to teach at the school, play the organ, train the choir and compose for the city’s two principal Lutheran churches, Thomaskirche and Nikolaikirche, as well as supervising and training the musicians at two others. Despite this heavy workload and frequent disputes with his employers, Bach composed some of his greatest music during this period. His choral compositions alone include such enduring masterpieces as the Mass in B Minor, Magnificat, Christmas Oratorio and the St John and St Matthew Passions. The St John Passion was first performed in Leipzig on Bach’s first Good Friday there, 7 April 1724, and was performed four times in the composer’s lifetime, each time with substantial alterations as Bach, as ever, strove for perfection.

For the first time in many years, the choral and instrumental forces of our entire community unite for what will surely be a magnificent performance. Conducted by Director of Music Quentin Thomas, and featuring an incredible Evangelist and our new Head of Singing, Nicholas Warden in the role of Jesus, the production offers our pupils the chance to be part of something incredible.

Come and Sing Choral Day – Celebrating Thirty Years of Co-Education Sunday 10 May Venue: Chapel Performance: 5.30pm (rehearsals from 2pm)Further details: [email protected]: £5 from Oundle Festival Box Office

Our Come and Sing Choral Days have grown since they were first started three years ago. This promises to be a unique and special occasion indeed as we invite Old Oundelians to join our considerable ranks and celebrate the wonderful service of Evensong in the heart of the School as we focus on the thirtieth anniversary of Oundle School becoming co-educational. With an accompanying orchestra and large choral forces expected, we will focus on the beefy choral numbers for this occasion. Expect to be moved, make music with friends, and aim to linger on the Chapel lawns following the service with a social glass or two.

Summer Concert Sunday 21 JuneVenue: Great Hall Performance: 6pm (rehearsals from 4pm) Tickets: All welcome. No tickets required

In the final week of term, the Second Form goes ‘off timetable’ in pursuit of a theme, and many an academic department delivers presentations, challenges and games based on that theme. This year’s theme is ‘Secrecy’ and determined to keep making music despite the myriad of written examinations and other activities that the end of term brings, we shall muster the remaining musicians into one final burst of creative endeavour.

With a large cohort of quite outstanding musicians departing this year, our final larger ensemble concert is going to be spectacular with forces uniting for the final time. Having traipsed the county many times in search of perfect and fitting venues, we came to the conclusion that home turf will be ideal for this occasion — unusual though it is for us to perform evening concerts in our own town’s Parish Church.

Much will go into this concert, from solos to concertos, orchestras, choirs and ensembles through to the Jazz Band performing before and during the interval. The time to say farewell to these talented pupils is sadly upon us, and you are cordially invited to be a part of this wonderful occasion. We hope to feature Bosco Wong, Zachary Boser, Henry Cripps, Ed Burgess, Alex Hill, Evan Ball, Rufus Sumner and Beatrice and Cecily Wells, although, at the time of print, we are yet to confirm definite repertoire choices and reserve the right to place some of these concertos into earlier concerts in the year! To whet your appetite, the programme will include:

Marie Lee: Bruch Violin Concerto, second movementRyan Law: Haydn Cello Concerto, first movementArianna Chan: Fauré ElegyRalph Phillips & Samuel Townend: Bach Double Violin ConcertoKen Zhao: His own Piano Concerto

Jungho Lee: Tchaikovsky Violin Concerto, third movementEd Pelham: Mozart Clarinet Concerto third movement

Impressions – Where Art Meets Photography11 - 24 JanuaryDavid, who lives in Woodnewton near Oundle, has been a successful garden, landscape and nature photographer for many years. In the past six years he has gained two distinctions from the Royal Photographic Society, Licentiate (LRPS) and Associate (ARPS). His images have been selected for the Royal Photographic Society’s national Visual Art and East Anglian Regional exhibitions.

David had a career as a scientist but now, with the freedom of retirement, he is discovering his artistic side. This new creative phase was stimulated by the inspiring workshops run by Valda Bailey and Doug Chinnery. David uses multiple exposures and camera movement techniques to produce unique images. Rather than being traditional photographs simply recording what you see, his images interpret light and colours, shapes and patterns. They convey David’s individual perspective on places, be they grand views or intimate details, iconic subjects or mundane objects. They have been captured in ways that will surprise and intrigue the viewer, invite you to pause and explore, and perhaps smile when you recognise somewhere you know.

This exhibition of impressionist and abstract photographs is in two parts: images taken in the Oundle area, Cambridge and in David’s garden; and images from his project Coastal Impressions, created along the English coast, particularly in Norfolk and Northumberland. David has recently produced a second volume of images from his Coastal Impressions project (both volumes are available for purchase.)

All the images are photographs (honestly!) and all were created on David’s camera in the moment. They are the product of spontaneity and serendipity that can never be repeated; the results are striking, intriguing and sometimes enigmatic.

Laxton Junior School Art Exhibition 7 - 21 March After the success of their exhibition three years ago, once again the children at Laxton Junior School have been given the opportunity to display their artwork in the stunning setting of the Yarrow Art Gallery.

Every single child in the School, will exhibit work individually and collaboratively. This year the theme is ‘Animals’ and their images will show a mass of techniques, including clay sculpted British garden birds, Surrealist felt tip animal drawings, Pointillist seahorses and nature prints in the style of William Morris. The children have also been inspired by local artists, including Tessa Pullan, Sue Kirk and Ellie Sandall.

Protecting animals and caring for the environment are keys areas of focus in the primary curriculum and we hope you will see these themes in our exhibition, particularly in our projects using collected recycled materials to create striking pieces of art. We are very excited about sharing this work with the Oundle community and we hope you get as much pleasure from observing the exhibition as the pupils did from creating it.

THE ARTS January – June 2020

Light and Shade - Nick Grove 25 April - 9 May Nick is an artist working representationally in oils. He is inspired by the Georgian towns and countryside where he lives and can often be seen painting en plein air where the vitality of his subjects can be experienced ‘in the raw’. Other frequented parts of the UK include the North Norfolk coast, Cambridge, Oxford and London, as well as some locations abroad. Being predominantly concerned with capturing the play of light and contrasting tones in his work means that potential subjects for painting are not hard to find. Nick exhibits at The Mall Galleries in London, local galleries in and around Stamford and at solo exhibitions throughout the year, including the Yarrow Gallery.

Nick is also an accomplished portrait painter and has exhibited with the Royal Society of Portrait Painters. His portraits are the antithesis to the sometimes hastily rendered plein air paintings, due to his more academic approach to painting his sitters. He uses the sight-size method to capture the form of his subjects before applying paint in a confident but considered way, in order to capture the likeness, personality and mood of his sitter. It can take several months to complete a large portrait, working from his Stamford studio.

This, Nick’s second solo exhibition at the Yarrow Gallery, is entitled Light and Shade and it continues on the theme of light to incorporate increasingly complicated and challenging subjects and lighting effects. The exhibition includes still life paintings, portraits and larger plein air paintings of local scene, mixed with further afield destinations such as Cambridge, London and Hong Kong.

Secret MIND Exhibition 16 - 22 May This special Secret MIND Exhibition is a fundraising display of original postcard-sized artworks by local, national and internationally acclaimed artists, illustrators and designers, nestled amongst work from Old Oundelians, Art teachers and Art pupils.

Secret MIND is a fundraiser with a difference: an original art sale to raise funds for the registered charity MIND (for better mental health www.mind.org.uk). The annual event has attracted the support of a rich and diverse art community from near and far, united in supporting MIND in its vision to raise awareness and promote understanding.

As one of the most anticipated events of the Gallery year, the Secret MIND Exhibition:

• directly supports MIND in its vision to provide advice and support to empower anyone experiencing a mental health problem and to campaign to improve services, raise awareness and promote understanding

• gives visitors a chance to get their hands on an original postcard work of art created by a local, regional, national or international artist for a donation of £40.

The Secret? Each postcard is signed only on the back, so participating supporters will not know the identity of the artists until the purchase has been made and the exhibition has ended. At that point the secret is revealed. The exhibition will conclude with a celebratory revelation evening on Friday 22 May at 7 - 9pm. Alongside this evening there will also be an opportunity to enter into a secret bid for four separate larger pieces of artwork donated by the participating artists.

Thank you in advance for your support of this exhibition and for helping to make a difference. We look forward to welcoming you.
