Week 1: Stand out (for God)Week 2: Stand up (for what’s right)Week 3: Stand for (for what matters most)

Week 4: Stand againstWeek 5: Stand with

• Daniel was a teenager taken captivity by Nebuchadnezar during the first siege of Jerusalem in 605 B.C.

• He was a royal blood.• He faithfully served under the

administration of three kings: Nebuchadnezar Belshazzar Darius

• The unusual feature of his book is that Daniel wrote the central portion (2:4 – 7:28) in the Aramaic language.

• He may be compared to Joseph, for both men had the gift of interpreting dreams.

• Daniel’s life may be characterized by: Purpose Prayer Prophecy

3 Then the king orderedAshpenaz, chief of hiscourt officials, to bringinto the king’s servicesome of the Israelitesfrom the royal familyand the nobility

4 young men without anyphysical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for everykind of learning, wellinformed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in theking’s palace. He was to teachthem the language andliterature of the Babylonians.

THE

RESERVATION

OF DANIEL AND

HIS FRIENDS

4 young men without anyphysical defect, handsome, showing aptitude for everykind of learning, wellinformed, quick to understand, and qualified to serve in theking’s palace. He was to teachthem the language andliterature of the Babylonians.

DISTINCTIONVS.

DISQUALIFICATION

Best young future leaders

intentionally indoctrinate into

Babylonian culture & train

them to become future

governor leaders/advisors.

Do you see a man skillful in his work? He will stand before kings; he will not stand before

obscure men.

And Jesus increased in wisdom and in stature and in favor with God and man.

THE

RESOLUTION

OF DANIEL AND

HIS FRIENDS

5 The king assigned them a daily

amount of food and wine from the

king’s table. They were to be

trained for three years, and after

that they were to enter the king’s

service.

6 Among those who were chosen

were some from Judah: Daniel,

Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah..

7 The chief official gave them new

names: to Daniel, the name

Belteshazzar; to Hananiah,

Shadrach; to Mishael, Meshach;

and to Azariah, Abednego.

8 But Daniel resolved not to defile

himself with the royal food and

wine, and he asked the chief

official for permission not to

defile himself this way.

4 boys—12-15 years or so—uprooted

from family, over 1000 miles from

home.

Stripped of identity. Crush any sense

of dignity.

Change names—all related to

Yahweh/true God to Babylonian

gods.

Change diet—Eat food prepared for

king meat and wine dedicated pagan

gods.

DEVOTION &

DEDICATION

vs.

DEFILEMENT &

DESECRATION

Didn’t fight when their names were

taken: outward labels—

knew who they were.

Didn’t defend his name—

Took a stand when God’s name

would be defamed.

Predetermined resolution.

If you are going to stand out

for God—make some

decisions ahead of time.

THE

RECOMMENDATION

OF DANIEL AND

HIS FRIENDS

12 “Please test your servants for

ten days: Give us nothing but

vegetables to eat and water to

drink.

13 Then compare our appearance

with that of the young men who

eat the royal food, and treat your

servants in accordance with what

you see.”

14 So he agreed to this and tested

them for ten days. 15 At the end of

the ten days they looked healthier

and better nourished than any of

the young men who ate the royal

food.

DEFEND/DEPEND

vs.

DEFAME

Instead of making a public

protest, Daniel honors authority

& creates a plan. You can stand

out in the right way!

THE REWARD OF

DANIEL AND HIS

FRIENDS

19 The king talked with them, and

he found none equal to Daniel,

Hananiah, Mishael and

Azariah…

DESTINY

vs.

DESTRUCTION

Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us in Christ with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places,

even as he chose us in him before the foundation of the world, that we should be holy and blameless before him.

In love he predestined us for adoption as sons through Jesus Christ, according to the purpose of his will,

Robert Gould Shaw(October 10, 1837 July 18, 1863)

The story goes that the author of

"Glory," Kevin Jarre, was walking

across Boston Common one day when he noticed

something about a Civil War

memorial that he had never noticed

before.
