Who:
Ward sister charge nurse team leader or home manager
Responsible for;
identifying the nominated practice assessor and practice
supervisor/s
ensuring continuity of supervision and support
providing support in managing concerns
Practice Supervisor
Who:
NMC registered nurses and midwives
Other registered health and social care professionals
every student will have at least one allocated practice
supervisor or several
The same person cannot fulfil the role of the practice
supervisor and practice assessor for the same student
(exceptional circumstances)
The student will work with and learn from people who are
not registered healthcare professionals
Practice Supervisor: Role
organise and co-ordinate student learning opportunities
support and supervise students and provide feedback on progress
promote independent learning
review and authenticate evidence
Practice Supervisor: Role
contribute to the student’s Practice Assessment Document
identify underperformance or professional concerns and seek support
has sufficient opportunity to share relevant observations with the practice assessor

Who:
Registered nurse - with appropriate equivalent experience
for the student’s field of practice
Registered midwife - midwifery students
exceptional circumstances other registered healthcare professionals
Will undertake;
initial, progress and final review for students in each placement
or series of placements
formative assessment with link lecturer / practice tutor
summative assessment with academic assessor
Practice Assessor: Role
support the student to identify learning objectives
work with practice supervisors to organise and coordinate student learning activities
periodically observe the student across environments
ensure assessment decisions are informed by feedback from practice supervisors
confirm evidence supplied by the student is authenticated by practice supervisor/s and relevant to the proficiency being assessed
make and record objective, evidence-based assessment
work in partnership with the academic assessor to evaluate and recommend the student for progression for each part of the programme / NMC Register
manage underperformance

the student’s field of practice
