Assignment

This week's project is a team challenge.Your challenge is to look at BREAD in a new way. Create as much "value" as possible starting with

ONE LOAF OF BREAD.

Definition

Bread in its own context metaphorically has always brought people together, not just by means of feeding themselves but by nurturing their souls in order to feel close to each other.

Bread fulfills many functions and generates value in different ways.

Examples:

Entertainment value• “Spread the Bread – Use Baguette”

Artistic value• Modern art competition based on the idea of bread sculputures

Economic value• Scarcity• Quality

Social value• Peace-building through bread• Community ovens• Bread houses made from bread bricks

Entertainment Value

Humor is one of the best ways to create community.

A Facebook page for “Spread the Bread – Use Baguette” has been created to convey a feeling of community and to bring smiles to everyone. Happiness and entertainment is probably one of the greatest values that can be created: it keeps us sane during difficult times and it has a lasting impact on health!

Artistic Value

Bread sculptures are a way to create beautifully shaped figures with bread dough. Inspired by bread sculptures, we would like to propose a modern art competition based on the idea bread sculptures, created by one loaf of bread:

With a single loaf of bread craft a modern art piece which not only redefines the value of bread but also changes the the way we usually perceive it: as a relatively ordinary and perishable food item.

The following images are supposed to serve as a means of inspiration of how the perception on bread can be redesigned.

Economic Value

The economic value of a loaf of bread is measured by the maximum amount of other things that a person is willing to give up to have that loaf of bread.

So how can the economic value of bread be increased? There are two options:

(1) Scarcity: In this scenario, which generally applies to poor countries unable to cover essential needs, bread is a staple food. It is necessary for survival and no adequate alternatives are available to replace bread as a basic food supply. As a result of scarcity of bread or the lack of alernatives replacing bread, the actual economic value is relatively high.

(2) Quality: In this scenario, the perceived value of bread increases with its quality. Bread containing more valuable ingredients (e.g. GMO-free flour; additives such as vitamins or minerals) or being fresh for a long time can be sold at a higher price.

Social Value

Bread is a universal experience and provides a common language that helps unite and educate: it is present and consumed around the globe by people of different backgrounds, age groups, ethnicities and economic status.

Sharing bread, as a symbol for food in general, provides a basis for peace and cooperation.

As with pottery, there is even a therapeutic value in making bread. People‘s senses are being stimulated in different ways.

Social Value

In many areas of the world ovens are not available. Providing community ovens can help a village feed its people and provide social value in the relationships that will be built around the oven and the bread baking experience. One loaf of bread can feed a village.

Social Value

Bread bricks, baked hard, can be used as a tool for development. Where there are no other means to construct houses made from traditional bricks (shale, clay, water, barium carbonate) or clay, bread can be used with a special glazing after finishing in order to seal the bread houses off from water.
