2. List a few Star Office Functions or Applications?(***)
Star Office consists of several applications grouped together into an integrated
environment. Some of the functions are
i) Create text document using Star Office Writer.
ii) Create Spreadsheet using Star Office Calc.
iii) Create presentation using Star Office Impress.
iv) Draw using Star Office Draw.
v) Create a database using Star Office Base.
3. How to start StarOffice?
i) On the taskbar, click the start button.
ii) Choose, All programs StarOffice 8 folder.
iii) Click the Star Office program that you want to start.
4. What is Word processing? (or) What is Star Office Writer?(***)
i) Star Office Writer is a Word processor.
ii) Activity carried out using computer and suitable software to create, view, edit,
manipulate, transmit, store, retrieve and print documents.
iii) Document may contain text, tables, graphs, charts, equations, pictures and
drawings.
iv) Some commercially available word processing packages are MS Word, Lotus
Amipro, Word Perfect, Wordstar and Word Pro.
5. How do create a New Document using Star Office Writer?
i) File New Document
ii) A blank document appears.
iii) Most of the elements are similar to Windows applications environment.
6. How do you enter Text in the Document?
i) The text of the document is typed in big blank area of the screen.
ii) As the characters are typed they appear on the screen. A flashing vertical bar
called the insertion point moves to the right.
iii) When the text reaches end of line Enter Key must not be pressed but Writer
automatically wrap the text to next line.
7. What is an Insertion point? (***)
i) As the characters are typed, they appear on screen. A flashing vertical bar called
the insertion point moves to right.
ii) Insertion point always indicates where the new text will appear.
8. How do you save a Document in Star Writer?
i) Naming a file enables the user to find and open that file again.
ii) To save a Document, File Save command is selected or save icon is clicked.
iii) Select the drive, folder, filename and document type.
iv) Ctrl+Sis the keyboard shortcut for saving the document.
9. How do you close a document?
i) When the work is finished, the user should save and close the document.
ii) After saving the document, it is closed using File Close command.
10. How to open a document in Star Writer?
i) To reopen a document that has been saved and closed File Open command is
used.
ii) A dialog box similar to Save as dialog box appears.
iii) Name of the file to be opened can be chosen from the list.
iv) Alternate method of opening is to click on open file icon.
11. How to work with Multiple Documents?(***)
Once the documents are open we can switch between them in two ways
i) Click on the Window menu option and select the file from the list of documents
displayed.
ii) Click on the document button visible on the taskbar.
iii) Close the documents one by one using File Close command.
12. How do you move around the document?
i) The thick horizontal line in the page area is called the end-of-document marker
and the insertion point cannot be beyond this line.
ii) To move the insertion point with the mouse:
Mouse pointer is moved to the required spot and mouse button is clicked.
Insertion point jumps to that spot.
iii) To move the insertion point with keyboard:
Arrow keys and other key combinations are used.
13. How do you scroll the document?
i) If the document is long the text is scrolled by using the scroll arrows and scroll
bar.
ii) There are two sets of scroll arrows one for up and down and the other for left and
right movement.
iii) To scroll left and right: left and right arrow is to be clicked.
iv) To scroll up and down: up and down arrow is to be clicked.
v) To scroll a relative distance: scroll box is to be drawn up or down
vi) Scrolling does not move the insertion point.
14. What are the keys used for correcting mistakes?
i) If mistake is identified it can be corrected using Backspace Key or Delete Key.
ii) Backspace Key deletes the characters to the left of the insertion point.
iii) Delete Key deletes the characters to the right of the insertion point.
15. How would you switch over from Insert mode to Type-over mode?(***)
i) The user is in the Insert mode if the new text will be inserted and the existing
text would move to right.
ii) The user is in the Type-over mode if the text existing to the right of the insertion
point disappears while typing a new text.
iii) User can toggle between the two modes using Insert Key.
iv) The Status bar gives the information about the current mode.
16. What is Text Editing?(***)
i) Entering a new text or modifying the existing text in a document.
ii) Required word or portion of text can be selected using keyboard shortcuts or
mouse.

TEXT FORMATTING
ANSWER THE FOLLOWING FOR TWO MARKS
1. What is Text Formatting?
i) A text without any special formatting havemonotonous appearance.
ii) To outline text, highlight individual words or to separate certain parts of the text
various types of formatting can be applied.
iii) There are two types of formatting. They are hard formatting and soft
formatting.
iv) Star Writer offers number of choices for formatting like bold or italics, defining
font type, size and color.
v) Almost all formatting options are available under Format menu.
2. What is the difference between Hard return and Soft return? (or)
What is the difference between Hard Formatting and Soft Formatting? (or)
What are the different types of Formatting?(***)
i) A text without any special formatting havemonotonous appearance.
ii) There are two types of formatting. They are hard formatting and soft
formatting.
iii) A Hard return is inserted every time when Enter key is pressed.
iv) Soft returns are inserted as line breaks by Star Office Writer and are adjusted
when text is added or deleted.
3. What are the formatting changes that can be made with respect to Fonts?(***)
A Font is a set of characters and numbers in a certain style.
i) Bold, italic or underlined are the most common types of text formatting. It is
achieved by clicking Format Character and then selecting an option from
Typeface list box. Alternatively Ctrl+B, Ctrl+I, Ctrl+Ukeys are used to make
selected text bold, italic and underlined respectively.
ii) Changing the font type size and colour by clicking Format Character.
4. What is a Font?(***)
i) A font is a set of characters and numbers in a certain style.
ii) Each font looks different from other fonts.
iii) Fonts like Times New Roman looks professional and suited for business
documents.
iv) Fonts like Fajita are decorative. Symbols and Wingdings are set of symbols
used to insert special characters in the document.
5. How do you change the Font type?(***)
A font is a set of characters and numbers in a certain style. To change the font type
i) Select the text.
ii) Use Format Character to open Character dialog box.
iii) Click Font tab. Click the down arrow in Fonts Combo Box.
iv) From the list of available fonts, click the required one.
6. How do you change the Font size?
Size of the text is also important. Same size cannot be used for the legal document and an
advertisement.
i) Size of the font is measured in points and there are 72 points to an inch.
ii) To change the Font size select the text.
iii) Use Format Character to open Character dialog box.
iv) Click Font tab. Click the down arrow in Size Combo box.
v) From the list of available font size, click the required one. Text changes to
the required font size.
7. How do you change the Font colour?(***)
With the help of color printer some splash can be added to the documents.
i) To use a different text colour, Select the text.
ii) Click the arrow in the Font colour icon.
iii) A color palette is displayed from which the required color is selected.
iv) Alternatively select the text and click on the Font colour icon to apply the current
color of the Font color.
8. What is Highlighting?(***)
i) Highlighting is used to call attention to key ideas or points in a document. These
highlighted sections are used to review or find keypoints.
ii) To highlight the selected text Highlighting icon is selected. A colour palette is
displayed from which required colour is selected.
iii) To remove highlighting select the text and select No Fillfrom the colour palette.
9. What is a paragraph?
i) A paragraph is any text followed by a hard return.
ii) A single line can be a paragraph. Each paragraph can give different tab settings.
iii) Formatting option can be applied to a single paragraph or to a several paragraphs.
iv) Each time enter key is pressed the paragraph options for the paragraph are carried
to the next paragraph.
v) Paragraph marker is the Storehouse for all formatting options for the paragraph.
10. What are the various types of Paragraph alignments?(***)
One of the most common change is to change the alignment of a paragraph.
i) The four types of paragraph alignments are Left, Right, Centered and Justified.
ii) By default all text is left aligned and right margin is ragged or uneven. Justified
keeps both margins even.
iii) Best way to make alignment change is to use icons on Formatting toolbar or
Keyboard Shortcuts.

i) Alignment changes are most appropriate for headings or other special
paragraphs.

iii) It is a visual clue that helps the reader to see how the document is divided into
paragraphs.
iv) Text can be intended from left or right using toolbar or paragraph dialog box.
v) A special kind of indent called hanging indent is used for numbered list.
12. What is first line option?(***)
i) An option in paragraph dialog box that can be used to indent the line of the
paragraph.
ii) Using spin arrows if a positive value is specified the first line will be indented.
iii) A negative value will result in hanging indent. That is first line will hang outside
the paragraph.
iv) Hanging indent is a special kind of indent used for numbered list.
13. How do you modify the line spacing?
i) By default Star Office Writer single spaces the text.
ii) The seven different Line spacing values are Single line, 1.4 lines, Double,
Proportional, Atleast, Leading and Fixed.
iii) To change line spacing select the paragraph.
iv) Select Format Paragraph.
v) Click Indents&Spacing tab from Paragraph dialog box.
vi) Click Line spacing drop down list box and select required line spacing option.
14. What is the purpose of Bullets and Numbered list?
i) Bullets and numbers are used to list important points and messages.
ii) One way to set off a list of points or topics in a document is to create bulleted
