STARFORCE AS FICTION:An Account of Scenario Six in Story Formby Neil Shapiro
The following is an account of the action in a game ofStarForce played between science fiction writer. NeilShapiro and Redmond Simonsen. the game's designer. Ascatharsis for the defeat he suffered. Mr. Shapiro wrote ofthe action in the form of a science fiction story.
In 2462 A.D., the Human League and thePan-Human Hegemony were to meet onceagain in what one historian has termed their"years of revolving door hostilities." Theoutcome this time would be decided not somuch by the strengths and skills of therespective fleets, but rather more as a resultof the exploitation of one friend by another.
The citizenry of 82 Eridani were quick to voteon linking their fortunes to the HumanLeague. This decision, made in the latterpart of 2461, gave to the League advantagesboth in strength and the strategic placementof star systems. 82 Eridani and the originalsystems of Tau Ceti arid Epsilon Eridaniwere all within easy gate-to-gate shifts of oneanother. The three League StarGatespresented a mutually reinforcing network ofStarForce fleets to the eyes of the Hegemony.
The Hegemony, meanwhile, marshalled itsforces on Sol and Alpha Centauri and settledback to study the situation. At this time,Epsilon Indi decided to join the Hegemony, but all knew that the one StarForce they hadwould not likely be a deciding factor. Bothgovernments could only wait and wonderwhich way the more powerful system of DeltaPavonis would lean.
In the middle of 2462, the Hegemony'sAssembly was called back into emergencysession. Delta Pavonis had declared for theHuman League.
The threat of the League having fourStarGates and seven combat-availableStarForces as opposed to the Hegemony'sthree (supported by nine StarForces), quietedalmost all the Assembly's pacifists. War wasdeclared on the Human League.
However, the League did not look upon thearrival of the Delta Pavonis system as anunalloyed blessing. The Pavonis system was agood twenty-two light years from Tau Ceti, itsnearest neighbor within the League. Too farfor a simple gate-to-gate shift, travel fromone end of the newly expanded League to theother now required at least two shifts.
Wing-Touchers Phyllis Webb of Sol, andViola Clearwater of Tau Ceti had foughttogether just eleven years previously duringthe first, harsh years of contact with theL'Chal-Dah, They had worked well as ateam, now they faced each other acrosshostile space. The Second PHH-HL War,besides having the greater effects noted by all
historians, would destroy at least onebeautiful friendship.
Clearwater decided on a striking force of fourStarForces: Two from Tau Ceti theSungold and the Rapture; the Senlac fromEpsilon Eridani; and the Ageratum from 82Eridani. She split these four into twooperational groups and headed towards Soland Alpha Centauri.
Meanwhile, Wing-Toucher Webb haddecided on a strategy based upon a reversalof the doctrine she had always propounded toher friend Clearwater: Feint to the center, then cut off a limb. StarForces Yellow-hammer, L'Innocence, Cyclop and Fireball(all from Sol); the Thunderbolt from AlphaCentauri; and the Ramona from EpsilonIndi were ordered to meet in space and togive the impression of splitting into two equalgroups. One group (Spider-I) was ordered toshift towards the heart of the League and theother group (Spider-2) was sent towards theexposed Delta Pavonis,
When the Pavonians became aware of thegroup moving towards their Gate, theypanicked. They screamed twenty-two light-years to Tau Ceti for reinforcements. Theyexpected imminent attack by four, perhapsfive, Hegemony StarForces.
Wing-Toucher Clearwater considered theirpleas. It was true that if Delta Pavonis wereto be attacked, she had to act at once to startreinforcements across those long light years.Knowing Webb's fondness for "cutting off alimb" she broke up her attack force, ordering the Sungold and the Rapture to goto the aid of the Pavonians, The Sunlac andthe Ageratum were to feint towards Sol.
Clearwater had misjudged her old comrade'sstrategy completely. It was not Webb'sintention to attack Delta Pavonis. Spider-2,the group approaching the PavonianStarGate, was composed of only oneStarForce (Ramona). The weakest memberof the Hegemony had provided an irresistabledecoy.
The Hegemony's true strength was inSpider-L, now holding space no more thantwo light years from Tau Ceti. Webbsuspected that the Tau Cetian gate wassupported by two StarForces. She orderedher main force to assault Tau Ceti, a veryshort overshift away. As luck would have it,two of the Hegemony's Star Forces weremirror-shifted away from the scene of thebattle.
Inshifting to the Tau Ceti Gate came theYellowhammer, the L'lnnocence and theThunderbolt. One can imagine the relief ofthat diminished force when they saw that theTau Cetians were protected only by theirStarGate and a lone StarForce, theSeranade.
Staying in stellar mode, the Hegemony shipsdeployed themselves in a three-dimensionalpattern about the Tau Cetian Gate. Still toodistant for even a full cast from the Gate toaffect them, the three attackers went intobattle mode and continued their advance.
The StarGate Gallant could do almostnothing as long as the ships were out ofrange. Seranade shifted behind the enemyadvance and made an effort to take out atleast one of the opposing StarForces, to noavail. In fact, Yellowhammer andL'Innocence connected with a powerfulcombined cast on the hapless Seranade.Against all odds, the Seranade escapedunharmed.
Cheering broke out on the Seranade'sgate-to-ship communicators, but happinesswas to be short-lived that day. The threeHegemony ships moved ever closer to theGallant, keeping up their aegis (anti-castvalues). Though Force Seranade did its verybest, it could do no more than forestall thebitter end.
The Gallant decided to risk everything on afull cast against Force Yellowhammer, hoping to take at least that enemy StarForceout of action. Unfortunately, the Hegemonyships had also chosen that moment to make
• their move. The Gate. was hit from twodirections and, with no anti-cast remaining, was easily disrupted. Yellowhammer hadmaintained a high aegis and endured theGate's cast.
Less than seven hours after the Hegemony'sforces had inshifted, the Tau Cetian StarGatewas finally neutralized by a seconddisruption.
The three Forces then turned their attentionsto the lone Seranade. For a time, theSeranade danced about, shifting in and out, using its full movement potential to stay outof harm's way. But, with their telestheticsnearing exhaustion, they realized that sooneror later they would be caught in a strongcombat cast.
Wing-Toucher Clearwater, aboard theflagship of the Seranade, formally surren-dered to the Hegemony aboard the flagshipof the Yellowhammer. The Tau Cetianpopulation was telesthetic ally sedated and, when they "awoke, they found theHegemony's Star Soldiers occupying allstrategic points.
The League, with one of its StarGates andplanetary systems held by the Hegemony, took the course of least resistance andaccepted the compromise offered by thePHH.
Wing-Toucher Webb communicated herregrets and solicitations to Wing-ToucherClearwater. Her message went unanswered.
