Thomas Hobbes-• English philosopher• Wrote his views in the book Leviathan. • He wrote that people led bad lives and needed government to impose order to make lives better. • He thought monarchy was the best form of government. He was more pessimistic.

John Locke• English philosopher• Believed that people are born equal and have rights of life, liberty and property and if the government failed people had the right to over throw it. The American government was his ideal kind.

Jean-Jacques Rousseau• French philosopher• Believed that all people were born good and that society corrupted people. • In The Social Contract he wrote, "Man is born free but everywhere is in chains." • He also believed that government should work for the benefit of the common good not for the wealthy few. Adam Smith

• Scottish economist who advocated private enterprise and free trade. • His Wealth of Nations laid the foundations of free-market economic theory, government should not interfere with economics.

Frances Bacon-• An Englishman• Said the only way to gain knowledge was through experimentation.• Developed the scientific method along with Descartes.

Nicholas Copernicus-• Polish astronomer who recognized the inaccuracy of the geocentric theory; • His complete model of solar system supported the heliocentric theory
