\Insulated Lunch Bag with Drink Pouch

I have been sewing and crafting for as long as I can remember. As a

designer, I find it very satisfying to visualize a style and to figure out

the mechanics of putting it all together. With each iteration of a design,

I learn more about the structure of bags. Often, inspiration comes from

the beautiful fabrics available today. Other times, the challenge is trying

to find the fabric to complement the design I envision.

Finished size: 7˝ × 10˝ × 31/2˝

Innovative and imaginative., this bag has it all: a toggle-cinch drink

pocket on the outside, an ingenious looped closure to keep the

contents secure, and a slim interior pocket perfect for sliding in an ice

pack—all combined with a bias-tape edging adding a finishing touch.

4.Bastecordingtoeachshortendofthecasingandfeedthroughthegrommetorbuttonhole.

5.Withrightsidestogether,foldthecasinginhalflengthwiseandstitch

2.Usinga1/4˝seamallowance,sewthebiasbindingtotheedgeofthefrontflap,easingthebindingalongthelowercurvededges.

8.Onthedrinkpouchliningfabric,makea1/2˝foldalongoneofthe11˝sides,wrongsidestogether.(Thisisnowthetopofthelining.)

9.Withrightsidestogetherandthetopfacingup,pinliningtothedrinkpouchandsewaround3sides,leavingthetopopen.Takecarenottocatchthecordingorcasingintheseams.Turnrightsideoutandpress.

10.Topstitchalongtheedgeofthecasing,catchingthehemmedlininginthestitching.Tocreateapleatinthebottomofthedrinkpouch,oneithersideofthecenterpoint,makea1˝foldbybringingtherightsidestogether.

11.Bringthefoldedpleatstothecenterpointandpresswellwithsteam.

2.Pinthepleateddrinkpouchtothebackofthebag.Makesurethecasingisatthetop.

3.Stitcharoundbothsidesandthebottomofthedrinkpouch.Stitchagainoverthefirststitchingtoprovidethepouchwithadditionalstrength.

2.Sewbothsidesofthebagandthensewthebottomofthebag.

3.Bringthebottomcornercutstogether,matchingthebottomseamandthesideseam.Stitchacrossthecorner.Repeatfortheothercorner.RefertoCornerConstructionTechniquesonpage118.

4.Turnthebagrightsideoutandpressoutthebottomseams.

5.Pressthebindingtothewrongsideofthepocketandsecurewithmachineorhandstitching.

6.Toattachthepockettotheliningfabric,measureup21/2˝fromthebottomandover3˝fromeachside.Becertainthatthebindingisatthetopofthepocket.Adjustasneces-sarytocenterthepocket.

7.Stitchthepockettotheliningbytopstitchingalongoneside,acrossthebottom,anduptheotherside.

8.Assembletheliningfollowingthesamestepsasin“AssemblingtheLunchBag.”

Lining the Lunch Bag1.Withrightsidestogether,tuckthelunchbagintothelining.Matchupthesideseams.Makesuretheliningpocketisagainstthebackofthelunchbag.

2.Double-checktomakesurethefrontflapistuckedintothebackofthebagandthatallcords,straps,andhandlesaretuckedoutofthewayofyourstitchingline.

3.Pinthelininginplacealongthetopedges,leavingabouta3˝openingforturninginthefrontofthebag.

4.Stitcharoundthetopofthebag,leavinganopeningforturning.

5.Pullthebagandliningrightsideoutthroughtheopening;press.

6.Tucktheliningintothebag.Takecaretofoldtheopeningrawedgesinsidethebag.Presswithheavysteam.

7.Topstitcharoundthetopedgeofthelunchbag,stitchingclosedtheopening.

Finishing

1.Foldtheflapovertothefront.Presswithsteam,ifnecessary.

2.Insertthedrinkpouchdraw-stringcordsthroughthecordlockfollowingthemanufacturer’sdirections.

3.Pulltheclosurestrapuparoundthehandle.
