Knik Arm bridge’s chances in danger

VOTED DOWN: Agency begins process that might remove span from city’s long-term plans.

The ground beneath the proposed Knik Arm crossing got a little shakier Thursday, when a slim majorityof an important state-city planning agency voted to put it on a track to nowhere.

Technically, the 3-2 vote of the AMATS Policy Committee starts a lengthy series of publichearings and review about whether the nearly $700 million bridge project should be removedfrom the city’s long-range transportation plan. It has to be there in order to get federal fundingand approval from the Federal Highway Administration.

April 24: Global cooling, strange voices and trauma

The earth is cooling

I read with interest your editorial "Here at the front lines" (April 22). While global warming hasindeed happened over the last 30 or so years, man’s contribution to said warming is minuscule.

How minuscule? Less than 3 tenths of one percent of the greenhouse effect is due to man.

Think Alaska

Home state deserves vacation consideration

Published Friday, April 24, 2009

Alaskans don’t view themselves as tourists in a tourist land, but we are. In fact, we’re among the mostenthusiastic and reliable of tourists. Other folks might visit this state once in a lifetime. We’re hereevery year, all year, and the statistics show we travel a lot.

Fuel prices

To the editor:

I just drove the Alaska Highway from Washington state. Fuel prices in Washington were about $1.89 forgas and $1.91 for low-sulfur diesel.

In Canada, the average price, until you got to Dawson Creek, was about 90 cents per liter for gas and80 cents for low-sulfur diesel. That equals $3.40 and $3.04 per gallon, respectively.

Protect rights

To the editor:

As I get older, I’m learning more about our Constitution and the rights we have. I feel the federalgovernment has forgotten it is supposed to work for the people, not the other way around.

Unless we take the time to educate ourselves on our constitutional rights, those rights might be gonefo reve r.

Protest

To the editor:

I was never so proud to be an American as I was April 15 when I participated with hundreds of otherpeople in protesting a government that has become insanely out of control.

Similar demonstrations were hosted all over the United States with attendance numbering in thehundreds of thousands.

Petition withdrawn

To the editor:

I would like to thank all the Doyon Ltd. shareholders who voted for me in this year’s election for a seaton the board of directors.

We have withdrawn the petition for a $1,000 dividend for each shareholder, because it would have leftour children and their children with almost nothing; we don’t want that.

My turn: Accusations against Wayne Anthony Ross ’ridiculous’

For days now I have read numerous accusations against Wayne Anthony Ross, the governor’sappointee for the position of Alaska’s Attorney General. These accusations have seemed petty andridiculous, and I hoped they would be given the little amount of attention they deserved.

For the past three years I have been employed as a paralegal in the office of Ross and Miner.

Mixing zones story misses the point

Letter to the editor

The Juneau Empire’s snapshot on Sunday of the battle over mixing zones and cruise ships missed theboat on the two most important points.

First, for a year the cruise lines waged a massive public relations campaign to simply remove the banon mixing zones imposed by the successful 2006 ballot measure.
