Mumbai
Population has always been
one of Mumbai's struggles. It began with a population
of 1,600 in 1715, by 1744 it
had grown to 70,000,
235,000 in 1836 and
644,000 by 1872. However,
Mumbai has experienced its
greatest population growth
since Independence in
1947.
In 1947 the population of Mumbai was 4 million and today it isgreater than 12 million. An increase of more than 8 million
people, almost all from internal migration and more than half of
that increase occurring between 1960-1970. This has also led to
massive problems with density and slums.
