It’s sowing and growing season at Allerton House at Hancock Park inQuincy. The assisted living community’sGarden Club recently kicked off thegrowing season with about a dozen residents in attendance. Members of theclub meet weekly, planting and tendingflowers and vegetables in the garden’sdedicated space on the community’soutdoor patio. Kelly Richards, marketing director for the Quincy Allerton House, says, “The club is a great experience forresidents. They share the vegetableswith the community’s Cooking Club;get the added benefits of being outdoorsand exercising; and get to know otherresidents who share their passion forgardening.”

A stroll to the back of Allerton House in Hingham leads to four raised flower beds inwhich the community’s garden enthusiasts aregrowing vegetables, herbs and perennials. TheHingham Allerton House Garden Club includesassisted living and assisted living memory careresidents, some tending the community gardens, others tending their own. “Some ofour residents expressed interest in having theirown plants, so we’re adding even more beds,”says Carol Taylor, marketing director, AllertonHouse at Harbor Park. Club members arehappy to share the fruits of their labor with thecommunity’s chef, who incorporates the freshlygrown herbs into his seasonal dishes.
