Scotland, beautiful, awesome and at times austere, its sweeping scenery has a wealth of well-known images – heathery grouse moors; fast-flowing salmon rivers; great golf courses which test the toughest nerves and skill and world-famous whisky, which ‘goes down singing hymns’.

This country of many moods is at its most mellow in Border Country beloved of novelist Sir Walter Scott, with its green hills and ancient abbey towns such as Kelso and Melrose on the banks of the picturesque River Tweed. These tranquil landscapes are a restful prelude to the many busy pleasures of Scotland’s two greatest cities: handsome Edinburgh with bold monuments and striking architecture, whose historic heart – the Royal Mile – links its lofty castle to Holyrood Palace – and dynamic Glasgow, where Victorian magnificence enjoys a vibrant, modern feel.

In Scotland, cities are soon left behind. The Trossachs are right on Glasgow’s doorstep – a maze of hidden glens and scenic lakes which boast the ‘bonny, bonny banks’ of Loch Lomond.

From here, the way is open to the Highlands: to Aviemore and the Cairngorms, whose tumbling rivers and ancient forests create the kind of Highland scenery the Victorians loved best.

Queen Victoria’s home at Balmoral, a gift from Prince Albert, remains a favourite royal residence today. Popularity is assured for neighbouring Speyside, the setting for the world’s only malt whisky trail which takes in no fewer than seven distilleries in and around Glenlivet.

For the heart of the Highlands, head for Inverness; talking points here include Loch Ness and its Visitor Centre and the Centre which marks the battlefield of Culloden where the Highland Army of Bonnie Prince Charlie fell to the Royal Troops of George II in 1746. From here, the scenery gets wilder the further north you go. Don’t leave Scotland without a visit to Fort William, where the towering summit of Ben Nevis and haunted Glencoe will leave you with mountain memories no other corner of Britain can match. If this isn’t remote enough, travel to the Orkney Islands where wildlife and history will be matched by remarkable scenery and terrific hospitality.
