κρύοθεραπεία The cold treatment Ancient Greece was a civilization belonging to a period of Greek history that lasted from the Archaic period of the 8th to 6th centuries BC to the end of antiquity (c. 600 AD). Immediately following this period was the beginning of the Early Middle Ages and the Byzantine era. Included in ancient Greece is the period of Classical Greece, which flourished during the 5th to 4th centuries BC. Classical Greece began with the repelling of a Persian invasion by Athenian leadership. Because of conquests by Alexander the Great of Macedonia, Hellenistic civilization flourished from Central Asia to the western end of the Mediterranean Sea.

Classical Greek culture, especially philosophy, had a powerful influence on the Roman Empire, which carried a version of it to many parts of the Mediterranean Basin and Europe. For this reason Classical Greece is generally considered to be the seminal culture which provided the foundation of modern Western culture and is considered as the cradle of Western civilization.

The term "cryotherapy" comes from the Greek cryo (κρύο) meaning cold, and therapy (θεραπεία) meaning cure. Cryotherapy has been used as early as the seventeenth century.

CCryotherapy may seem like something out of the space age but it’s actually

been around for much longer than it appears. While the concept of putting

something cold on an injury has existed since the dawn of time,

Cryotherapy takes this approach much further. The pioneers of

Cryotherapy drew on the idea of using cold to treat injuries and

transformed it into a revolutionary medical treatment that is taking the

world by storm today.

In 1978, Dr. Yamaguchi of Japan started using extremely cold

temperatures to treat his patients who were suffering from rheumatic

diseases. He began to notice that the treatment was extremely successful

not just for rheumatic diseases but for a number of other conditions as well.

Dr. Yamaguchi discovered that rapidly cooling the surface of the skin

significantly reduced the soreness and pain his patients were experiencing

in their joints. This was because the rapid decrease of temperature of the

skin’s surface led to an immediate release of endorphins, which

subsequently led to a decrease in pain. Drawing on this successful method

of treatment, Dr. Yamaguchi and his team came to the conclusion that

using a cryosauna to rapidly cool the surface of the skin was much more

effective than immersing a patient in an ice bath. While ice baths have been

the go to method for treating patients suffering from pain of any kind, it was

discovered that ice baths actually did more harm than good. The benefits

of whole body Cryotherapy over ice baths stem from the fact that in an ice

bath the cold penetrates below the skin which in turn damages both the

skin and the muscles – it makes the muscles more susceptible to tearing

and prolongs the healing progress in the long run.

When Dr. Yamaguchi discovered these benefits his revolutionary

Cryotherapy technology was brought to Europe to be refined. The research

that ensued resulted in Cryotherapy being used for the whole body rather

than a specific body part as Dr. Yamaguchi had initially practiced.

This research led to the development of whole body Cryotherapy

chambers, which we now have today. Over the past 3 decades numerous

studies have confirmed the benefits of whole body Cryotherapy, which

were initially researched by Dr. Frieke in Germany. Today Cryotherapy has

become the go to method for recovery from sports injuries, chronic pain,

and inflammation. It has even been used to effectively treat cancer.

Cryotherapy is no longer just a treatment for pain, it has become part of a

holistic approach to wellbeing and health with numerous other positive

effects on the body including weight loss, a production of collagen in the

skin, an increase in energy, and boosting the metabolism. Cryotherapy has

come a long way from when it was first discovered by Dr. Yamaguchi in

1978. The prospects of Cryotherapy continue to grow everyday as more

and more scientific research is conducted.

Ten Goals in Ten Games

Meet Vardy, James Vardy, the red-hot striker who is the No1 client in Leicester’s cryotherapy chamber.

“Obviously the cryo chamber that we’ve got at the training ground came in useful. “It is absolutely freezing but it helps you in your recovery, so fair play to the club for getting that in.”

JJamie Richard Vardy, born 11 January 1987, an English professional

footballer who plays for the Premier League club Leicester City and the

England national team. He joined the club in May 2012, for a non-league

record transfer fee of £1 million.

He scored ten goals in ten games to equal that of Ruud van Nistelrooy's

record and breaking that record when he made it an unbelievable eleven

consecutive Premier League goals in 2015, against Nistelrooy’s former

club Manchester United.

The 28year old striker has proved the amazing benefits of cryotherapy.

Vardy missed the friendly matches the England national team played

against Spain and France, after he suffered from a dis-comfort in his hips.

COVERF E A T U R E

“I was very close to not playing, I’m not going to lie. Credit to the physios, they were literally working on me constantly. It was frustrating missing the England games but there was no point in risking it.

His performance against Newcastle United summed up his being put on

ice. “I was very close to not playing, I’m not going to lie. Credit to the

physios, they were literally working on me constantly. It was frustrating

missing the England games but there was no point in risking it. I’d have

loved to play, but it gave me a week off to recover. “Obviously the cryo

chamber that we’ve got at the training ground came in useful. “It is

absolutely freezing but it helps you in your recovery, so fair play to the club

for getting that in.”

Without a doubt the ice cold therapy helps athletes recover from injuries

faster and enhances their fitness and performance levels through regular

cryotherapy sessions. A weeklong treatment got Jamie back on his feet

and I guess he will be doing it quite often.

Vardy is definitely an athlete on top of his game, you can get your fitness

level to the maximum with the right diet, workout regimen and of course

your cryotherapy sessions.

CRYO… You…only strongerCRYO… You…only healthier

By Miriam Seferian

P R O J E C T

Everyone knows there is a distinct movement towards a more conscious

way of living. This is not to say it’s a merely a spiritual movement or a

religious one either. It’s a connection we are making with our selves about

the quality of our lives and how we live… Its called…Lifestyle.

One conscious connection we can all relate to in some way or another is the

Consciousness of Body.

Consciousness of body does not only relate to being aware of your body and

what it looks like in a pair of jeans or your new found mini-dress.

Being conscious of body goes beyond the external aspects and connects us

with our inner biological body giving us insights as we learn to hear and

understand what the body needs in order to look and feel great.

With a low metabolism, your body can encounter an array of symptoms such as slow digestion, feeling lethargic, difficulty in transforming the foods you eat into energy...

P R O J E C T

Most people look at food as a thing to do at a certain time of day, which is

absolutely normal, given that we are conditioned from a very young age to

organize our daily eating schedules based on time as opposed to bodily

needs.

Body consciousness is about understanding that food is our energy source

and what we put into our bodies should be thought of as nourishment for the

body to perform what we need it to do as opposed to feeding it out of

unbalanced habit. It’s about understanding your body and it’s mechanisms

for keeping you healthy, fit and active. Everything from proper and healthy

eating habits, how the body eliminates toxins, what exercises your body

wants and knowing how to detox the body in a healthy way without

throwing you off balance.

Most people don’t realize that all this is related to our metabolism and the

vital role it plays in doing just that. With a low metabolism, your body can

encounter an array of symptoms such as slow digestion, feeling lethargic,

difficulty in transforming the foods you eat into energy, a hard time losing or

maintaining a healthy weight as well as experience weight gain as a slow

metabolism stores food as fat instead of using it as energy.

Consuming energy requires physical activity. The more rigorous and regular

the more the body becomes accustomed to using its energy.

Another way of burning energy has been proven to be Thermogenesis.

There are three types of thermogenesis and one of them is a non-exercise

activity that occurs when the body is exposed to cold temperatures…

Shivering.

P R O J E C T

The body shivers when it feels cold in order to produce energy to keep the

body warm. This process stimulates the expenditure of calories you’ve

consumed and, as a result with continued and regular Thermogenesis raises

the metabolic rate. Higher metabolic rate equals proper consumption of

calories, which equals less weight gain. Obviously a good understanding is

needed of how much calories ones body must intake in order to have this

work for us in a positive way. Each person has a different energy

consumption level based also on the active or sedentary lifestyle one leads.

Here in Dubai with our average temperatures varying between 25 and 45

degrees, Celsius, the shivering effect rarely happens naturally, that is, until

Cryo was introduced to the market.

Cryotherapy exposes the body to extreme temperatures as low as -140

degrees Celsius for a period of 3 minutes. Three minutes at that low

temperature is sufficient to send the body into Thermogenesis burning up to

an additional 800 calories throughout the day of the treatment. This has a

direct effect on your metabolic rate. How does one know? One indication of

the positive effects of the treatment is an increase in energy levels, which

induces an increased appetite. This is an indication that the body has

consumed the energy from the food it has consumed and is requesting

more to keep up with the added energy levels of the body. So imagine how

this can affect your body’s process of burning caloric intake if you were to

add this to your daily lifestyle and exercise program.

The positive effects Thermogenesis or CRYO therapy has on the body are

numerous, and I will be discussing them in the next articles to come, but this

is a good place to start and I’m hoping you will be motivated to begin your

process of Body Consciousness.

MMeet Sadiq Hussein, he has been in the finance industry for over 20years,

a tennis enthusiast, who uses cryotherapy to rejuvinate and recover from

long flights and countless tennis matches. We caught up with him during

one of his routine CRYO sessions before his tournament and we also got

the opportunity to watch him play the game he loves so much.

Facing a much younger opponent, Sadiq showed finess, amazing speed

and agility to win the match. Cryotherapy gives your body the extra push it

needs to function at its peak and leaves you refreshed. In his words “its’s all

mind over matter”. Little wonder why it’s the secret of champions.

He calls it ”the big chill” and courages you reading this to get on it, do

your body a great deal of good. “It’s non invasive, just the cold air, give it a

few minutes and trust me you’ll need a hot chocolate mocha after this.”

...Give me this in the business and first class lounge. Give me the full body and localcalized session, it takes 15 minutes and I’m actually feeling good as new.

...trust me after this you’ll need a hot chocholate mocha after this.

It’s all mind over matter, I tell you that...

Treatment ofthe Stars

Cryo to bring out the best you yet.

FFor centuries one trend that will never go out of fashion is looking good.

What better way of doing that, than doing what the stars do? Hollywood

plays a significant role in the fashion, style and beauty decisions many

people follow religiously if I may say so.

Cryotherapy is an innovative treatment where the body is briefly exposed

to very cold temperatures ranging from 140°C to -180°C in order to

stimulate multiple health, fitness, weight-loss, healing, and beauty benefits.

One benefit of cryotherapy is there are no painful procedures that cost you

an arm and a leg; cryotherapy is nothing close to that. I would go with a non

invasive proceedure anyday.

There are lists of beauty treatments you can take advantage of to come out

looking like the star that you are.

A healthy lifestyle is the best fashion statement you can put out. A really good diet plan and regular workouts are all part of doing just that, but is that all it takes to have the great health you aspire for?

Ahmed Suhail bin Huwaiden Al Ketbiembraces the cold for recovery

FHe has bagged medals from the Arab Championship, Gulf Championship

and the Abu Dhabi Cup the UAE’s Jiu-Jitsu Champion, Ahmed Suhail bin

Huwaiden Al Ketbiembraces cryotherapy like other athletes for quick

recovery. For the UAE’s most famous jiu-jitsu fighter, winning is

everything.

With 45 medals in his collection from various competitions, he says he is

hungry for more. Like any other top athlete he has a bright future and is

determnined to stay on top of his game, little wonder why the country’s

jiu-jitsu federation has heavily invested on him.

He is proud of his achievements, but he is not complacent. Despite his

impressive haul, the powerful young man remains as fiercely competitive

as ever. Stay fit, and look to the future, his motto seems to be.

“As long as I am healthy and take care to avoid injuries, keep working hard,

as well as being totally committed, then I will continue to fight”.

Spreading the chill througout the UAE as Abu Dhabi gets CRYO’D

CCRYO the people freezers have continued in their resolve to spread the

word about cryotherapy and it’s amazing benefits. It’s not news that

several Hollywood acts and sports personalities use cryotherapy to help

them keep their performance level up, maintain that youthful glow as well

as aid in weight loss.

Abu Dhabi is now experiencing the chill. Residents here are more than

ecstatic about the recent opening. Regular Cryo customer Nasreen Khan,

who moved to the UAE from the US last December, first tried Cryo six

months ago. She always had to travel all the way from Abu Dhabi for a

freeze, but that is now a thing of the past. She gets in about 2 sessions a

week, but now her sessions have increased to 4 sessions a week, which

includes the whole body cryotherapy and the glow facial.

“It’s definitely helped in cutting soreness after my run and I feel more energetic. Before, I felt drained and tired...
