Chuck TompkinsReflects On His History With Racker

Cornell Men’s Hockey Coach Mike Schafer and Tompkins Trust Company CEO, Greg Hartz, went head-to-head in a virtual fundraisingcompetitionfromJune 15thtoJuly15th.Inatremendously competitiveandclosecompetition, it was Coach Schafer’s Team Big Redpullingoutinvictory.This competitiontemporarilyreplacedthe annualhockeygametraditionallyheld at Lynah Rink that features NHL stars, former Cornellhockeyplayersandlocalcelebrities.

TheVirtualFace-Offlaunchedwithadraftofpotentialfundraisers,moderatedbyTopherScott.Teamcaptainspickedtheirrosterbasedonfundraisingability,asopposedtohockeyskill.Every$1,000raisedwastheequivalentofscoringagoal.Withafinalscoreof49-49,itwasonlyahundreddollarsseparatingthetwoteams.Generoussponsorshipdollars and grants from the Triad Foundation and the Nolan Foundation contributedtothefinaltotalof$170,000.

TherealwinnersaretheindividualswithdisabilitiesandtheirfamilieswhoreceiveservicesfromRacker.Wearehumbledbythegenerosityofourcommunity,andwanttoexpressoursinceregratitudetoall633donors,allofourplayersandeveryonewhosupportedthisevent. Thankyouforyoursupportduringthisdifficulttime!

writes...Chuck TompkinsMylongtermrelationshipwiththeRackerorganizationhasbeenajoyandprivilege!IwasfirstintroducedtoRackerthroughlongtimesupporterandboardmember,DavidDunlop.LittledidIknowwhatitwouldpersonallymeantobeincludedinsuchahighlyrespectedandrelationallyrichorganization.Iwas“hooked”frommyfirstboardmeetingasIobservedtheleadershipskillofRogerSibleyandthecaliberoftalentthatsataroundtheboardtable.FrommyfirstdaysintheorganizationIwasimpressedwiththeexceptionalcompetencyofthestaffaswellastheheartthattheboardhadfortheorganization.Overtheyears,Iwouldlamenttheretirementofaseasonedstaffperson,figuringthatnoapplicantwouldbegintofilltheshoesofthepersonwholeft.Wrongonalloccasions!Rackerattractsnotonlythebrightest and the best but they attractthosewhoservewithaheartfortheindividualsandfamiliestheyserve. UnderDanBrown’sempoweringleadership,theorganizationhascontinuedtothrive,evenduringtheseroughmonthswithCOVID.Challengesaremereopportunities.TeamspiritisintheDNAofRacker.ThevisionandmissioniscarriedwithsuchexcellencethatitisconsideredoneofthemostrespectednonprofitsinourcommunityandwithitseffectiveadvocacybystaffandfamilieswhovisitAlbany,ithasearnedrespectfromelectedofficials. The Roundtable Leadership is highly competent and absolutely trustworthy as it stewards the vestedtrustofdonors.Theboardisnotarubberstamp,butistappedforitsexpertise,wisdomandbroad-basedknowledge,makingitamostactiveandengagedboard.TransparencyfromDantoallstaffisakeyquality,sharingfreelybothsuccessesandfailuresinoverseeingamulti-milliondollaroperation.TheRackerteamtruststheboardandtheboardtruststhestaff.

AnnualhighlightsincludeourgeographicalCelebrationsinTioga,CortlandandTompkinscounties.ThevisiontakesonreallifeaswehearfromfamiliesandindividualswhoseliveshavebeenchangedasaresultoftheRackertouch.StaffarehonoredwithvariousawardsandthosebreakfasteventsonlyservetoconfirmthattheworldisabetterplacebecauseofRackeranditsimpactonthosewho,manytimesinmainstreamculturearemarginalizedortheirpresencenotacknowledged.Icannotforgettheemotionalgratefulaccoladesofmanyparentsastheysharetheprogressoftheirsonordaughter.Orwhocanforgetthebroadsmilefromaresidentthathasmovedfromdependencytointerdependencyinagrouphomeandthedifferencearelationalinvestmentmadefortheirselfesteemandcontributiontotheircommunity.

Inmyretirementyears,Ispentsometimepaintingintheresidentfacilitieswhichgavemeupcloseaccesstobothstaffandresidents.IoftenaffirmedthestaffasIobservedhowtheytreatedsomechallengingresidentswithrespectanddignity.Theydidn’tseewhattheydidasamere“job”butasa“calling”whichaccessedthebestoftheirhumanityinservicetoothersandoftenwithnothanksinreturn.Iwasgratefultomakemanyfriendsovertheyears.

Iwaspartoftheprocesstoseeourvision/missionrefinedandwhatawonderfullysmooth(andtimeconsuming!)process;buttheendresultisexcellent—envisioning a world where everyone knows they belong.Iamsothankfultohavebelongedandtohaveserved!

NYSfirst,andthentheUS,wentintolockdown,essentialRackerstaffkeptgoingintowork,facednewregulationsandsetbacksheadon,anddevelopednewandcreativewaystomeettheneedsofthepeopletheysupport.

NotonlydoDSPstakegreatprideintheworkthattheydo,andis what drives them to keep coming back (even through blizzards andstatesofemergency)buttheindividualsandfamiliestheysupporttakeanevengreaterprideintheworkofDSPs.Buildingaworldwhereallpeopleknowtheybelongandactivelycreatingopportunitiesforpeopletobeconnectedinthatworldismoreimportantnowthanever,andwearethankfulfortheDSPsandCSPswhohaveshownusresilienceandcreativityinthemidstofapandemic.Wearesogratefulforyou.

ThreeofourWilkinsPreschoolgraduateshadauniqueopportunity last Spring – they were in a fashion show at

CornellUniversity!ThekidsworedesignscreatedbyJuliaDeNey,a2020CornellgraduatemajoringinFashionDesign.

JuliastartedworkingwithourpreschoolasthePhilanthropic Chairforhersorority,volunteeringhertimeatthepreschoolandlearninghowchildrenwithautismorotherspecialneedsstruggletofindclothesthatfeelcomfortable.Assheworkedonherfashionlineforthe2019show,Juliafocusedonsensoryfriendlyclothingoptionsthatincorporatedcompressionlinings,

fidgets,tag-freeshirts,andotheradaptationstomakeclothesmorecomfortable and inclusive for children.

Based on her years of independent research,Juliahasspenthertimesincegraduationworkingonlaunching her own online clothing label that meets the sensory needs of children, called Sense-ational You.Wearethrilledtoseethefashionindustrypayingattentionto these unique challenges, and even more thrilled that some of our preschoolers were able to participate!

Preschool Reopens for SummerRacker'sEarlyChildEducationCentersinTompkinsand

CortlandCountiesopenedforareducedcapacitysessionthisSummer.Strictguidelines,safetyvideos,andtracingprotocolsensuredthatstaff,families,andstudentswereoperatinginasafe atmosphere for everyone involved, and without any loss to opportunitiesforeducationandsuccess.

ThesessionincludedcontinuedremoteopportunitiesviaRacker's Remote Learning Channel on YouTube throughout the Summer, as well as dedicated in classroom learning for those that met New York State's criteria for in person special educationservices.Safetyprotocolsincludedrobustcleaningandsanitizing,pick-upanddrop-offprotocols(writtenandvideomodeled)forchildrenarrivingwithparentorschoolbus.Floor decals and parking lot signs helped make safety measures straightforwardandeasytofollow.

Family Resource Virtual ActivitiesWhenNewYorkStatefirstshutdownandmanyinperson

services for people with developmental and intellectual disabilitieswereshutteredorputonhold,Racker'sCommunityServicesteamscontinuedtoprovidein-personservicesthroughout the pandemic for those who needed that level of supporttomaintaintheirhealthandsafety.Toreachthosewho were unable to receive in-person supports, and to provide additionalopportunitiesforconnectionacrosstheRackerfamily,theFamilyResourceProgramteamjumpedintoactionandVirtualActivitieswereborn!
