hotographer Jack Klobetanz has traveled the world from Mon-golia to Bolivia, but Steamboat Springs has captured his heart.

“I’m so excited about Steamboat that I want to share that enthusiasm with my clients,” he says.

Jack’s excitement for his subject matter shines through his work. Case in point: the June 2011 wedding of Lisa Buck and Ryan Adams atop the gondola at the Steamboat Ski Area. The Adams’ wedding is showcased on the cover of the 2012 edition of the “Steamboat Springs Wedding Guide.”

“That was a really fun wedding to shoot,” Jack recalls. “They’re a great-looking couple and they had a great group of friends.” The couple chose Steamboat for their ceremony because they had skied here previously.

Their wedding on a mountain peak was special in itself, but Lisa was

also feeling on top of the world because the Okla-homa Thunder basketball team, for which she works, had just made the play-offs. Jack found common ground with Ryan, who is a fireman, as he has had train-

ing as a firefighter himself. “I really respect those people,” he says.

The Adams’ wedding day was a little cool – ski corp. employees had just pushed the last of the snow off the lawn on Thunderhead Peak the previous week – so the ceremony itself was held indoors. “But we really wanted to take photos outside,” Jack recalls. “She was a little chilly, but she was so excited, it all worked out.”

Jack takes a photojournalist’s approach to portraiture. He began his career as an art director for CBS, transitioning into a position as part-ner of a design firm in Steamboat. “Throughout my career as a visual artist, I’ve mixed in rich life experi-ences like working as a kayak guide on the Atlantic Ocean and being a ski patroller in the Rockies,” he says.

Jack books weddings through his studio, 970-736-8354, or visit www.jackklobetanzphotography.com to get in touch.

ne of the most memorable moments in Trista Hofschulte’s wedding to John Ehrichs came when she first saw her groom waiting for her

under the arbor atop Thunderhead Peak at the Steamboat Ski Area.

Trista was never nervous or anxious the entire day, until she saw her handsome husband and 125 guests awaiting her walk down the aisle. At that

point she whispered to her father, ‘”OK Pops, now I am nervous, and I might cry!”’ She recalls her dad trying to brighten her already wide smile on this momentous occasion. “He tried so hard to make me laugh,” Trista says.

Trista and John wrote their own vows, but added an innovative, personal touch to exchanging them. They had them delivered to one another in their getting-ready

Trista, whose favorite flowers are peonies, knew they were out of season in July. So she was surprised when John’s vows arrived with a bouquet of peo-nies. Her wedding planner, Lindsey Grannis of One Fine Day, had found a few rare blooms for the occasion.

Trista chose a strapless, hand-embroidered gown by Lazaro. The dress buttoned up the back and was adorned with crystals. “It was very de-tailed,” Trista says. Her five brides-maids wore gowns by Jim Helm, also of Lazaro. Junior bridesmaids wore Brooks Brothers’ dresses.

At the reception, elegant silver vases held pink and ivory flowers and a touch of green. Votive candles comple-mented the arrangements. Steamboat Ski & Resort Corp. chefs catered the din-ner, and a Boulder-band provided the music. “They tear it up!” Trista says. “The dancing and the toasts – how fun it was! People were on the stage singing with the band while others were dancing the night away.”

The sunset atop Mount Werner capped the day.

One particularly popular attraction at this fabulous party was the photo booth, where guests could step inside and mug for the camera. “It was a huge hit!” Trista says. The beautiful sunset capped an idyllic evening, one that Tris-ta’s friends say was among the best weddings they had ever attended.

essica Fritz grew up in Steamboat Springs, and her groom, Stefan Hoerschelmann, lived here for a while, too. So having the ceremony at Concordia Lutheran Church, which she attended as a child and where her parents are still involved, made it especially meaningful.

A strong contingency of locals attended the festivities, but many of the

160 guests came from other states, and some of Stefan’s relatives traveled from Germany. The couple decided to forego the traditional rehearsal dinner in favor of a barbecue at Olympian Hall for all their guests.

Pastor Dave McKnight officiated at the ceremony. After both the bride’s parents walked her down the aisle, the couple exchanged traditional vows.

One light-hearted moment occurred when the ring-bearer suffered stage fright and threw the pillow, allowing the rings to roll under a pew. “I didn’t see it, but the picture sequence is hi-larious,” Jessica says.

The newlyweds rode in a private gondola car to their reception atop Thunderhead Peak, where cocktails were served on the deck, followed by dinner and dancing in the Cham-pagne Powder Room. “Lindsey Yo-chem and the staff at the mountain did a fabulous job putting everything together,” Jessica says.

“My dad put together a slideshow for the father-daughter dance. It was so special and heartfelt – I think everybody got a little teary-eyed,” Jessica says.

“We also did a choreographed dance with our wedding party – kind of flash mob style. My sister and I came up with it not even a week be-fore the wedding. The performance wasn’t totally perfect, but everyone had a ton of fun putting it together and I think the guests enjoyed it. Two

of our friends got married recently, and we re-enacted ‘The Dance’ so I think it will live on,” Jessica says.

Jessica’s advice for brides-to-be is to plan realistically. “Figure out what your priorities are and what you’d be willing to forego. The day is supposed to be about celebrating your love with your friends and fam-ily, and it’s supposed to be FUN!

I would definitely recommend hiring a wedding planner. She helped us turn our wedding vision into a re-ality – from flowers to linens to the schedule of events. I didn’t want to sweat the small stuff, and I didn’t want our moms or families worrying about those details either,” Jessica says.

Jessica didn’t have to worry about what was happening behind the scenes. Instead, she and her husband danced the night away. “The dancing, oh the dancing, was so memorable!”

egan Ormston and her groom, Tyson Slater, explored Steamboat Springs’

Western heritage with their family and friends in the days leading up to their wedding. Hiking was among the most popular activities, and the men in the group went shooting at a friend’s ranch. They also enjoyed a beer or two at a locals’ bar.

The wedding party spent a day by the river, celebrating with a meal at a riverside restaurant; they had their rehearsal dinner in Old Town, and strolled from gallery to gallery at Steamboat’s First Friday Artwalk.

Many of the 200-plus wedding guests came from elsewhere in Colo-rado, while about 40 people came from other states. “People made a real vacation out of it,” Megan says. Most of their guests stayed at the Shera-ton Steamboat Resort, where the con-cierge staff helped planned guests’ activities.

Steamboat was the only venue the couple considered. Both had lived here previously. “We couldn’t imagine getting married anywhere else,” Megan says.

The ceremony and reception were at Catamount Ranch’s Heritage Cabin. After unusually variable weather in late spring, the skies cleared on June 4 for the ceremony. “We lucked out big time!” Megan says. “Always have a contingency plan,” she advises. At Catamount, a huge party tent provides cover in case the weather doesn’t cooperate.

The most touching personal moment at Megan and Tyson’s wedding came during the ceremony itself. The couple wrote their own vows, and a friend officiated. “He recounted our memories and personal anecdotes. It made it perfect,” Megan says. The bride wore a sweetheart gown with a

small train and buttons up the back, designed by Priscilla of Boston, while her eight bridesmaids wore silk taffeta dresses by J Crew. The bride carried a bouquet of mixed flowers – “they almost looked like wildflowers,” Megan says. Dark Pa-cific colors, navy and purple, added an air of elegance to the décor.

Catamount catered appetizers and dinner, but the bride brought her own favorite dessert, fruit tarts. “They fit right in with the whole wedding,” she recalls.

With such a large outdoor ceremony, a problem or two wouldn’t have been a surprise. But that didn’t happen at the Slater wedding. Megan recalls asking her wedding planner’s assistant a few days before the wed-ding if there were any concerns. “No,” was the reply. “If there is a problem, you’ll never know about it,” the planners assured her.

Megan’s number-one piece of advice for brides at destination wed-dings: Hire a wedding planner with local connections. In addition to One Fine Day’s staff, Megan and her mom

did most of the planning. Her father, whom she describes as “very busi-nesslike,” also wanted to be involved in organizing his only daughter’s wedding. “He was so pleased with Lindsey and Catamount,” Megan says. He told her, “I will never forget the way you look tonight.”

“Our wedding day ended upbeing just perfect,” Megan says.

These Boots Are Made for Weddin’

riscilla of Boston, Lazaro, Vera Wang…Steamboat Springs’

bridal parties wear fashions by some of the world’s most renowned designers.

And more often than not, there’s a pair of cowboy boots in the mix. If the ladies don’t wear them, the men do. You don’t have to plan a rustic, country wedding to make a statement with stylish cowboy boots.

“At almost every one of my weddings last summer, someone was wearing cowboy boots,” says designer Cathy Vogelaar of Steamboat Floral & Gifts.

“I’ve had whole wedding parties come in here to pick out boots,” says Michelle Bauknecht, buyer at F.M. Light & Sons, Steamboat’s historic Western apparel store. “Boots are really, re-ally in style for weddings. You don’t have to wear a Western-style dress to wear boots. Brides wear them with sundresses, short dresses and formal gowns.”

Some brides choose traditional off-white or cream boots for their

wedding, but colors are currently in vogue. More than one bride has worn a formal, white, strapless dress with red boots. Others select footware to match their décor. Old Gringo hand-tooled, embroidered boots, which Michelle describes as “works of art,” are suitably fancy for weddings.

For generations, grooms and their men have worn cowboy boots with formal attire. Today, some go with traditional black or brown boots, while others choose colors and styles to complement the bride’s footwear. Exotic materials like ostrich are also popular.

The children in wedding parties don boots too. Little girls especially love the pink ones, Michelle says. “I hear stories all the time: ‘my kids had boots just like this!’ It’s so cute, the kids walk out of here in shorts and their new cowboy boots.”

Whether they’re ornately detailed with hand-embroidered designs, or sleek and polished leather, when it’s time to say I do, cowboy boots are made for weddin’.

Color Makes a Bouquet Pop

Are fresh flowers available in North-west Colorado?

A. Every season, we have in-credible flowers, but not all flowers are available all year. For instance, peonies, lilacs, cherry blossoms and forsythia are rare except in spring.

Q. What about wildflowers? A. Steamboat brides always want the natural look. I’m of-ten asked about wildflowers, but those just don’t last. Plus, the Forest Service frowns on picking them, because many kinds are protected. We can create the look, though, with blossoms that won’t wilt.

Q. What makes a great bridal bouquet? A. I love all-white bouquets, but for photos, a touch of color really makes the bouquet stand out. In the midst of all the green in Steamboat, a colorful flower really pops.

Q. How do you know who should have a bouquet or boutonniere?A. Especially with big extended families and stepfamilies, you really need to make a list. You don’t want to look back and be sad that someone was excluded.

Q. Where else can a bride showcase flowers?A. Everywhere! I’ve done weddings this summer that had two arches, one to usher people into the venue, and the other where the couple takes their vows. Brides wear flowers in their hair, and cakes are adorned with them too. Flowers are the focal point of arrange-ments at the reception, and we keep all the loose pedals to be strewn through-out the venue.

Décor Sets the Mood

Flowers make fabulous centerpieces, but what would you suggest to

accompany them? A. Tall lanterns with candles are fabulous. Willow branches with dangling flowers (use fishline and a needle to thread)...so elegant.

Q. Could you share an idea or two for memorable party favors or items for a welcome bag?A. Steamboat favors in gift bags/bas-kets are great souvenirs for guests, as

Lora Reichley is the owner of Last Call Productions.

Q are wildflower seeds. Things good for the earth are awesome!

Q. How best to light tables at an evening, outdoor reception?A. Flameless candles add mood lighting, and you don’t have to worry about them blowing out. Strands of big clear, round bulbs set the mood as well.

Q. What options are there to traditional guest books? A. Try a signed plate/dish, or a flower-box windowpane.

Since so many guests travel to destination weddings, there must be lots of ques-tions about logistics, climate

and activities. How best to handle that? A. Once a couple has set the date and booked their venue – very important in Steamboat to do this early because venues are limited – the next thing

they should do is set up a website and send out a ”Save the Date” postcard with the website address.

Q. What should be on the website?A. Besides photos, a link to their bridal registry and a schedule of events, lots of logistical information: how to get to Steamboat, links to hotels, rental car companies, taxi service, the Chamber and the ski area.

Q. Who’s responsible for guests’ travel expenses?

Destination Weddings: Entertaining the guests

A. Everyone pays his or her own way.

Q. What about lodging?A. A couple might block out rooms at a hotel, but that’s not a commitment to pay for guests’ lodging. Another option is to choose a couple of “rec-ommended” hotels.

Q. What about planned activities? A. That’s the beauty of Steamboat. There’s a lot to do. Brides can plan group outings, and let guests choose whether to go their own way or join the organized activity. Guest arrival bags are a good idea.

Q. What about spending time with guests on the days surrounding the wedding? A. The traditional rehearsal dinner is being replaced by a casual welcome

dinner or barbeque to which everyone is invited. Brunches the morning after the wedding, whether a continental breakfast or full buffet, offer guests the chance to say good-bye to the newly-weds before heading home.

A buffet or BBQ is the perfect alternative to the traditional rehearsal dinner.

ask the experts

What are the current trends among Steamboat brides?A. I try to create trends, not follow them. I really look

at each individual bride and groom and their families to design a custom theme for them.

Q. Can you give us an example?A. One bride told me that the most important thing to her was family, not only those who would be attending the ceremony, but also her ancestors. We created a Victorian theme, and

Brides Make Their Own TrendsWedding planner Jill Waldman is the owner of The Main Event.

used vintage family photos as table placecards. The guests loved seeing the family photos made into unique centerpieces.

Q. What about trends in color?A. I caution brides not to pick such an unusual, trendy color that when they look back at their wedding pictures in future years, they’ll say, “Oh, what was I thinking?” Neutral colors are best, Then add a stronger color as your accent.

Q. What about wedding dresses? A. Here, too, it’s best to choose a style that’s timeless, with clean lines. You want to look classic and classy. Think Princess Catherine, not Princess Diana.

What are the logistics of having a wedding atop the gondola?

A. We have two venues: Hazie’s, an elegant, intimate restaurant, and the Champagne Powder Room for up to 250 guests on the top floor of the Thunderhead building. It includes use of the veranda. Either venue at 9,131 ft. – 2,000 feet above town – has incredible views and the sunset is un-touchable.

Q. What about weather?A. Don’t fret about the weather! We have wonderful shuttle drivers that will get you and your guests to the top of the mountain if necessary.

ask the experts

How far out should a groom and his men reserve their formal attire?

A. Ideally, four to five weeks. That’s not to say it can’t happen quicker than that; it can happen right up to the end.

Q. How do groomsmen who live in other parts of the country arrange a long-distance tux rental?A. They get by someone who’s in the suit business. It’s so important to be measured by a pro.

Every Bride Loves a Smart-Dressed ManTodd Allen is the owner of Allen’s Clothing Company in downtown Steamboat Springs.

Q. What happens if there are last-minute problems? A. They can be handled in-house or via overnight delivery. Q. What are the latest trends in men’s wedding attire?A. Steamboat weddings vary so much; we see all kinds of things from super-casual to pretty darn formal.. But defi-nitely, black tuxedos are still by far the most popular.

Q. How should a tux fit?A. Right now, everybody’s sizing them for a fairly tailored look.

Steamboat Springs’ moniker, “Ski Town USA,” has been expanded recently to include “Bike Town USA.” Winter or summer, the Yampa Valley is the heart of recreational activity in Northwest Colorado.

The city’s two ski areas – Steam-boat Ski Area and Howelsen Ski Area, combine to offer skiing and riding for all ability levels, night or day, and of-ten on Champagne Powder®. Guided backcountry ski trips are also offered.

Snowmobiling, ice-fishing, hockey, ice skating, cross country skiing, snow-shoeing, tubing, ice driving and ice climbing are among the other winter sports possibilities.

In the summer, hundreds of miles of mountain-bike trails, plus well-established road biking routes, local, regional, national and international competitions, an emerging downhill bike park and two major bicycle man-ufacturers – Moots and Kent Eriksen Cycles, comprise Bike Town USA.

On beyond two wheels, the valley also offers hiking, horseback riding, blue-ribbon flyflishing, indoor and outdoor tennis, rock-climbing, golfing, kayaking, tubing, swimming, hunting, sporting clays, ATV tours, kayaking, boating and canoeing…to name a few.

Arts and CultureSteamboat Springs is ranked as

one of the U.S.’s top 100 art towns, where visual and performing artists find inspiration and an appreciative audience.

At the center of the local art world is the nonprofit Steamboat Springs Arts Council, the umbrella organization for the arts. The city boasts more than a dozen art galleries, the Steamboat Symphony Orchestra, Strings Music Festival, Steamboat Dance Theatre, Perry-Mansfield Performing Arts Camp, First Friday Artwalk, Steam-boat All Arts Festival, Art in the Park,

arrived at the ceremony in a float boat, while Joe Koonce of Boulder asked his nephews to carry the rings down the aisle on pillows stuffed in cowboy hats.

“One groom brewed his own beer – Wedding Day Wheat,” says Jill Wald-man of The Main Event. She has also tasted gin, home-brewed by the groom for the occasion.

At the wedding of Lisa Buck and Ryan Adams, the groom had his own cake, adorned with shot-gun shells. A groom’s cake has its roots in the Ameri-can South and can be served at a sepa-rate table during the reception, or at the rehearsal dinner.

Even if the wedding does truly belong to the bride, traditions leading up to the day of the ceremony defi-nitely emphasize fun for the groom. In Steamboat Springs, the traditional bachelor party is often replaced by, or at least accompanied by, a guys’ day on the golf course, at the fishing hole or at the shooting range. Kayaking, hunting, horseback riding and watersports also make for ideal groom’s day activities in the summer, while skiing, riding and snowmobiling are time-honored winter standards.

And lest we forget, all the effort the bride puts into creating her special day is done in anticipation of the look of joy on her groom’s face when he sees her walking down the aisle. “Wedding Day Wheat,” home-brewed beer.
