STELLA MARISNEWSLETTER
Term 3 Issue 06
25 August, 2017
www.stellamaris.nsw.edu.au | [email protected]
St Monica’s Feast – 26 August Tomorrow is the feast of St Monica. St Monica, born in Algeria, lived in a culture in
which Christianity was not the dominant religion and she was challenged by her own family’s
disbelief. She prayed for her husband and her son to find God and many years later her son, St Augustine, became a saint and a
Doctor of the Church.
Dear St Monica, troubled wife and mother,
many sorrows pierced your heart during your lifetime.
Yet, you never despaired or lost faith. With confidence,
persistence, and profound faith, you prayed daily for the
conversion of your family; your prayers were answered. Grant me that same fortitude, patience, and trust in the Lord.
Intercede for me, dear St Monica, that God may favorably hear
my plea and grant me the grace to accept His Will in all things, through Jesus Christ, our Lord,
in the unity of the Holy Spirit, one God, forever and ever. AMEN

from the PrincipalDear Stella Community,
Calendar Change Please note a late change to the calendar for 2017. We will move our professional learning day for staff to the end of the year and so all students should return to school for Term 4 on Monday, 9 October. I apologise for any inconvenience but given that Term 4 is a short term, I would like to keep as many teaching days available as possible.
Year 12 Music Night Wednesday evening Year 12 Music students performed at Gio’s Restaurant. Congratulations to Catherine Connell, Elyse Jenkins, Nina Longfellow, Kentia Marley-Kale, Zoya Martin, Grace Mitchell, Evie Mort, Angelica Nati, Lily O’Neill, Abby Ransfield-Hanson, Ciara Rogers, Eva Sweekhorst and Bridget Thomson who all performed admirably on the evening to an audience of their peers, their teachers and their families. Thank you to the Performing Arts team, especially Mr Browett, for preparing the girls so well.
International Night International Night this week was a showcase of our talented overseas students. There were great performances from many students and I thank the host families and guardians who came to support the girls. Special mention needs to go to Sunny Wang and Lisa Kristenson who are both Year 7 students and showed great promise for the future. The winner on the night was Karis Peng for her great magic show and runner up Shana Yang who sang and danced. Thank you to Ms Collins and Jiani Chen who organised the evening.
NAPLAN Online This week our girls participated in a test for the possible future running of NAPLAN in an online environment. I thank the girls for their cooperation in this task. Mrs Yeates has further information about NAPLAN results later in this newsletter.
Parents and Friends Raffle P&F Raffle tickets have been distributed to the girls and I ask you to support this project. The main prizes are amazing and include a degustation dinner with matched wines at Pilu, Freshwater; one night’s accommodation at Quest Harbour View Apartments, Manly; Sparkling High Tea for four at Burnt Orange Mosman; a Pandora voucher for $250 and many other prizes. As an incentive, the girl in each year who sells the most tickets will win a $100 Pandora gift card.
Reminder: Providing a Term’s Notice If your daughter is changing schools for 2018, the College Registrar, Kerrie Dudley, must be notified by the end of Term 3. Please note that late notice will incur additional administration charges.

NAPLAN 2017The results from the 2017 NAPLAN testing for students in Years 7 and 9 have arrived at the College.
As we are undertaking the NAPLAN Readiness Test this week, with the same group of students, we will distribute those results from next week.
From our preliminary analysis of the collated data sent to the College, we see the majority of students working at the proficient level, scoring in the top three bands for the Reading, Writing, Grammar and Punctuation, Spelling, and Numeracy tests.
The Year 7 results indicate a strong performance from a group of students demonstrating skills well above others across the State.
For those concerned about meeting the minimum standard in literacy and numeracy to receive their HSC, our Year 9 girls are well on their way.
Stella girls have surpassed the State average for the percentage of students at Band 8 level or higher in all domains. Just to highlight the areas of importance in meeting the minimum standard:
Reading: Stella 74% State 58% Writing: Stella 67% State 45% Numeracy: Stella 69% State 59%
Remember that a great result in Year 9 NAPLAN testing is just one way to meet a standard set for 3 years in the future at HSC time.
Further analysis will ensue as more data becomes available. We will work on a strategic plan to support all students toward improvement, particularly those who need assistance to demonstrate their personal best.

Are you concerned about the amount of time your child spends on their screen?
SCREENAGERS is a film about the impact of the digital age on our children and how to help families find balance and in turn minimise any harmful effects. After seeing the film, you will feel more confident and better equipped to establish balance around screen time.
This movie probes into the vulnerable corners of family life, including the director’s own, and depicts messy struggles over social media, video games, academics and internet addiction. Through surprising insights from authors and brain scientists, solutions emerge on how we can empower kids to best navigate the digital world.
We encourage you to attend with your daughter so that you can tackle these issues together.
Runtime: 68 minutes. Directed by: Delaney Ruston, M.D.

CurriculumLANGUAGE NEWSAt the beginning of the month, Year 9 Spanish students had the opportunity to experience how to order food and drinks in Spanish. The experience was nice and educational. Girls enjoyed asking for food and drinks to a native speaker waitress. They showed confidence and felt proud of themselves when talking. As a teacher, I was very excited and happy to see that the results of their hard work in class have paid off well. It was definitely a good learning experience.

VISUAL ARTS NEWSVisual Arts students from Years 10 and 12 have both recently been on excursions to the Art Galley of NSW.
The Year 10 200 hours Visual Arts class have been studying portraiture and the Archibald Prize in Semester 1, so it was appropriate that they have now also had the opportunity to visit the exhibition, which is on display until the 22 October.
The students attended a very informative and engaging lecture about the History of the Archibald Prize as well as the controversys which have surrounded this prestigious Art Prize. The lecturer challenged the students to think about the role of the “selfie” portraiture in the digital age.
Our Year 12 Visual Arts students have just completed a case study on Architecture so we attended a day of lectures focusing on urban spaces, to complement the work completed at school prior to the day. The lectures were thought provoking and inspired the students to think about the role of Art Galleries: how Australians use Galleries and the changing nature of art making in the 21st century.
The lecturers led us around the grounds where the new ‘Sydney Modern’ is planned to be built. Presently the Art Gallery of NSW is significantly smaller than all of the other major galleries in the country. The new development will bring long needed opportunities to exhibit the large stock of stored art works the State owns, as well as more chance of receiving touring exhibitions (which tend to go to the other galleries). also of importance is creating more opportunities for student visits.
It was interesting to see how the architects, SANNA who won the tender for the Architectural design, plan to make adaptive reuse of the underground oil tanks (north of the existing site) as an interesting exhibition space. Seven metres high, and filled with concrete columns, it presents a thought provoking way to reuse an urban space. Look on the website for further information. We look forward to 2021 when we will have this fabulous new Art Gallery, coinciding with the 100th year of the Archibald.

We were also very fortunate to have one of the education staff give very helpful tips on how to best answer the types of questions students will be required to complete in the HSC. I am sure this excursion has been useful for our HSC girls.

SPORT REPORTNSW Athletics School Relay On Wednesday, 23 August, 20 Stella students competed at the NSW Athletics School State Relays. The Stella teams had a fantastic night, with amazing results in both track and field events. The Stella team was the most successful on the night, taking away the most medals of all in a very tough competition against teams from many Catholic, Independent and State schools.
We even have two teams that are now NSW Champions! We won gold in the Intermediate 4 x 400m and Intermediate Sprint Medley (200m, 200m, 400m, 800m). The highlight of the night was our 4 x 400m team (Sophie Wickham, Tasma Woolley, Mia Tamhane and Emily Smith). This team raced against open aged teams and won the race by nearly 100m. They were also faster than nearly all of the open aged boys teams, which is an amazing effort seeing our team was made up of girls who were all very young in this event!
Well done to the following teams who won State medals: Junior Throws - Silver: Brooke Smith, Kylah Whyte, Olivia Fernie, Alex Alle Junior Jumps – Bronze: Megan Edwards, Kylah Whyte, Mia Tamhane, Emily Smith Intermediate Throws – Silver: Audrey Tan, April Griffiths, Amy Polikowski, Sophie Wickham Intermediate Jumps – Silver: Sophie Wickham, Aysha Whyte, Chloe Tyrrell, Sydney Kania Intermediate Sprint Medley– GOLD!: Sydney Kania, Aysha Whyte, Sophie Wickham, Tasma Woolley Intermediate 4 x 400m – GOLD!: Sophie Wickham, Tasma Woolley, Emily Smith, Mia Tamhane

Pamper the ParentsHi, my name is Nicole Cassidy the owner of Cassidy's of Harbord Hairdressing. 9 years ago, I decided to create a charity, which raises money for children’s hospitals, but more importantly we give a day of joy to children that are stuck in the four walls of a hospital room, some for months at a time.
Pamper the parents day is about ‘Pampering the Parents’ by haircutting/styling, beauty treatments, massages, facials, reflexology, cake and food stalls, lolly bags, clowns, magicians, entertainment, games and Home and Away stars to give everyone a day of joy and give the families a day of reprieve to what they’re going through and maybe for a slight second forget what they are going through and show them that others care too!
Please watch the two-minute You Tube clip www.pampertheparents.com.au
Pamper the Parents will be held on Sunday 10 September 2017 at The Children’s Hospital Westmead, raising money for The Children’s Hospital Westmead, The Ronald McDonald House and Bear Cottage Manly. The goals for this year is to help house families at the new Ronald Macdonald House Westmead.
The things we are looking for help with is a band that will play from 1230pm till 3pm We need helpers for the fruit stall We need more beauticans We also need man power on the Saturday before the 9th to help set up for four hours. If you can help in any way, contact me on 0410 33 88 74.
