New School YearBy: Cammie S.

New Year, new people! This school year is your year to shine. All you need is a good work ethic and to do your absolute best. I

do not want to sound like it is all easy and that it’s a total breeze because honestly it takes a lot of effort. You have to work at being a good student. You have to learn good study habits. At the same time, you also have to be attentive and wanting to learn. Coming in to Middle School I am not going to lie I was scared, and had many butterflies in my stomach. However, once I got the movements of being here I started to get better bit by bit. (Continued on page 4)

NUMS Cross County is really P.R. ing!

The NUMS CC team has been improving consistently and each runner has been increasing their personal record (PR). I am sure you are wondering why there is a picture of a cannon with the runners. Well, a couple of weeks ago they competed at the historical George Rogers Park near Springfield, OH. Since the park is located on the battle ground where George Rogers Clark attacked the Indian Village of Pecku-we volunteers reenact the Revoluntionary War spot. Zaiden W. , a 7th grade runner said it was really cool to begin our meet by the cannon going off, but your heart feels like it stops. Being considered a tough course the team did a reasonably good job. The terrain is a bit more hilly than our team is used to. Additionally, we have a 6th Grade CC Team that has hosted a meet. The 6th grade runners along with 4th & 5th grade runners are coached by Mrs. Lanka and Mrs. Huckaba. They have ran at Marion and Buckyeye Valley and Pleasant . Assemblies in the NEWSBy: Emma S. and Lily T. On September 12th, a speaker named Tim Conrad came to our school to talk about social me-dia and internet dangers. Tim Conrad is a Professor/therapist at Ashland University. When Tim Conrad came in he talked about the many dangers. Some of the things he talked about was that anybody and anything on the internet can be dangerous. You should not use your full name, age, and address on the internet. In a study, 46% of the group would rather have a broken bone than a broken phone. Also, in a study goldfish have more memory than humans. Another important point that was made is that you should always lock your device. Informa-tion is more important than your device. Along with locking your phone only your parents should know the password. Along with the social media, 40% of colleges check your social media. Believe it or not you can get addicted to your phone and experience fear when you do not have it. It is called nomopho-bia and is the fear of not having your phone. In one there are 40 billion texts and 6 billion emojis. If you need help or need to report something there are a slew of online and text sources to help you.

Harvest MoonKayleigh Lycans The beginning of October did you notice that everyone seemed…off, well that is just the magic of the harvest moon. The Harvest Moon is the full moon that rises/begins at the start of the autumn equinox or the end of Septem-ber and the beginning of October. When the harvest moon rises it can be every bright quite early, When that happens it is tradition for farmers harvesting there summer crops. The Harvest Moon is very different from normal Moon cycles, when the Moon rises it rises 50 minutes later each day whereas the Harvest moon rises at sunset and lasts longer. The Harvest Moon has many different theories and folk tales and to read more go to the web-site below!https://www.almanac.com/content/what-har-vest-moon

Did you know? Candy Corn is a type of candy that’s over 130 years old, is a “mellow cream,” or candy that’s made from corn syrup and sugar with a marshmallow kind of flavor. It tastes rich, but it’s actually fat-free.

NUMS BandBy Averi S.Mr. Leavitt allows new 8th grade band members to join the high school marching band. Every Friday the Marching band brings out their instruments and goes out onto the field to show what they have been practicing. The band gets a free ticket to watch and to play their instruments. At the start of a game, the home team's marching band starts the game by playing their fight song and the Star Spangled Banner. When halftime comes around the band comes down onto the track marching to their field entrances. When we get into position Mr. Leavitt whistles, calling us to start playing. When we finish marching our song on the field, we play the fight song and march off the field. After the game, we end by playing “Ain’t Been Good” in front of the high school and go home.

Baby Hippo Fiona!By: Cammie S. You have probably have already heard about the new baby hippo at the Cincinnati zoo. If you have not then I will inform you about it. This new baby hippo’s name is Fiona. Baby Fiona’s mom’s name is Bibi. The people who take care of her noticed that her ears were shaped like an ogre’s, and that’s what they decided to base her name of off. Surprisingly the baby hippo was born six weeks premature and has become a global celebrity. When she was born, she only weighed twenty-nine pounds. Meanwhile that may seem like a lot most baby hippos weigh 55-120 pounds when born. Fiona was born on Janu-ary 24, 2017 and now weighs at least three hundred seventy five pounds. She has definitely improved and reached a healthier status. If you want to see her and her mom Bibi, she is at the Cincinnati Zoo in the Botanical Garden.

(Continued from Page 1)I am currently an eighth grader here at North Union Middle School. So trust me I know how hard it can be. When I was in sixth grade, I struggled but I got back up and said I am not going to give up! You Know what? I got back up and I studied so hard it felt like my brain was going to fall out. No matter what even if you have con-vinced yourself that you absolutely cannot do something you can! A couple of days ago I had two math problems that really stumped me; I spent a good minute or two just trying to figure them out. Never-theless, once I figured them out I was so proud of myself. I felt so accomplished, as if I could do anything and you know what I can. All you really need to know about Middle School is to try your absolute best, and to always keep a positive mind set.

(Mr. DeRoad’s Inter view Cont. from Page 1)However, I never thought that I would end up be-ing an educator! I am extremely excited to be in this field and working with the terrific students at NUMS!” Based on this he feels very strongly about his new career here at NUMS, and is enjoying every moment of it. I also asked him why his teach-ing method is different from others he replied with, “I am a high energy individual that hopes to provide that spark to my students each day! There is nothing wrong with a little go-go in your mojo! Good, better, best! Never let it rest! Until your good is better and your better is your best!” From his statement here, he loves what he is doing here and feels that he can help many students with his skills of being a math teacher. Some extra facts about Mr.DeRoads are how he was part of the Heidelberg University in Tiffin, Ohio where he was a part of the football team. He was also both a football player and basketball player, along with being a part of the track team for two years for his High school team, Fairbanks. Some of Mr.DeRoads favorite things include his favorite color blue, his favorite dessert is old-fashioned chocolate chips, and his all-time favorite food is Cane’s chicken ten-ders. He also believes that football is the “Greatest team sport on the planet.” Therefore my interview that I did with Mr.DeRoads was very successful, and you can definitely tell that he loves his job of being an educator. We thank Mr. DeRoads for the interview and wel-come to NUMS. Go Cats!

The month of October is National Bullying Prevention Month. It is traditionally held in the first week

of October. This campaign is held in order to raise awareness and end bullying. I read a book called “Bystander”; This book was about a kid named Eric who found himself being friends with a bully. After he finally stands up to the bully, Griffin, I felt he had overcome his fear and become a stronger person. 88% of people are bystanders during a bullying incident. Why do we almost never stand up when we see bullying or harassment? Are we scared of being bullied, are we scared of getting hurt? Imagine how the victim feels as you watch them hurt and do nothing. It feels as if you have no one and nothing, and you are nothing. Sometimes bullying can lead to people feeling suicid-al. Bullied victims are two to nine times more likely to commit suicide. Some warning sides of someone feeling suicidal are withdrawals from others, ongoing sadness, losing interests in things they once enjoyed, or engaging in dangerous actives. Imagine someone you love in the bullied victims spot, your friends, and your family. Stepping up and standing against any, discrimination can help in ways you cannot imagine. Just comple-menting someone can give him or her the boost they need to get through the day. A compliment can make someone feel like they have worth. This month, and every other month, please try your best to end bullying and harassment.

Latin American Club (New Club:)By: Lilly T.

¡Hola! As you may know, the Latin American Club is now open to middle school students at North Union. The Latin American Club is a club made for students interested in travel-ing to Latin America during high school. Our next trip will be to Nicaragua, in 2019. The high school group has the option of traveling to Latin America every two years, during the summer. This club is dedicated to raising funds for these trips. These trips are community service trips and fun for all who come. If you are interested, there are forms at the office window. Ask Mrs. Guy, the Spanish Teacher, any questions about the club or trip. If interested, we hope to see you at our next meeting.

WeatheR By Mitchell M. & Max C.As we know, there have been many hurricane’s this season. The names are:• Harvey (C4)• Irma (C5)• Jose (C1)• Katia (C2)• Lee (TS)• Maria (C5)The letter C stands for category. Category 5 is devastat-ing and Category 1 is Minor. TS stands for Tropical Storms, which means the winds, are not fast enough to be consid-ered a hurricane. Harvey, Irma, Katia, and Maria were the most devastating of all. Harvey hit the coast of Texas and Louisiana. Places hit by Irma were Antigua and Barbuda, St Martin, Anguilla, St Bart’s, US Virgin Islands, British Virgin Is-lands, Puerto Rico, Turks and Caicos Islands, and the United States (Florida). Hurricane Katia hit Mexico, and Hurricane Maria hit Dominica, St. Croix, and Puerto Rico. Hurricane Maria seemed to be more of a threat than Irma when it came barreling towards Florida. At least until it veered off course and went up the east coast. This season, a natural phenomenon created an astounding photo for a satellite:

Tri-Rivers Trip 2017 By Shayla J. On September, 28 2017 the North Union Middle school 7th graders went on a field trip to Tri- Rivers in Marion. The trip was to help us decide on what we would like to do after middle and high school and beyond. There were all kinds of different ca-reers we can do like Criminal Justice, Financial Aid, Patient Care Technician, Practical Nursing, Paramed-ic, Emergency Medical Technician, Welding, Fabrica-tion, Allied Processes, and FANUC Robotics. To get into some of the jobs you have to have good grades. Eventually you will get into the job you wanted after you finish your course at Tri-Rivers. The students in the picture were in the Culinary Arts restaurant section. When we toured that part we got cookies if we asked questions, so of course, we asked a lot questions.

J K E S(Answers are on the last page:))Q: Who won the skeleton beauty contest?Q: Who helps the little pumpkins cross the road to school?Q: What do you get when you divide the circumference of your jack-o-lantern by its diameter?Q: I’m tall when I’m young, I’m short when I’m old, and every Halloween I stand up inside Jack O Lanterns. What am I?Q: If money really did grow on trees, what would be everyone’s favorite season?Q: What do you get when you drop a pumpkin?Q: What happened when the turkey got in a fight?Q: Who lives in the scary Hundred Acre Wood?Q: What did one leaf say to another?Q: Why are all Superman costumes tight?Q: Why do birds fly south in the Fall?Q: Why is Dracula so easy to fool?
