PathwaysOCC offers many programs that help students get on the path to a STEM2 education. These pathways allow students to experience STEM2 in middle school, high school, and throughout their college career.

PUENTE ProjectThe PUNETE Project helps students acquire the skills they need to pursue their goals and attain a Bachelor’s degree. PUENTE’s three program components - writing, counseling and mentoring - have helped students obtain leadership roles in the community, earned their degrees, began their

careers and returned as mentors for new PUENTE students.

UmojaUmoja is a community and critical resource dedicated to enhancing the cultural and educational experiences of students. When the voices and histories of students are recognized, the opportunity for self-efficacy emerges and a foundation is formed for academic success.

Extended Opportunity Programs and Services (EOPS) EOPS serves to enhance student success by providing “over and above” services to students with economic and academic barriers to their education. Another fundamental goal of the program is to increase the number of underrepresented students enrolled in the community college.

Cooperative Agencies and Resources for Education (CARE)CARE is administered by the EOPS Program and serves the unique needs of single parents who are designated as head of household.

CalWORKsCalWORKs at OCC assists and guides student-parents to realize their goal of family self-sufficiency by promoting post-secondary education, obtaining the job and “soft” skills necessary to successfully compete in today’s workforce, as well as striving for a healthy, well-balanced family.

Early High School CollegeThe Early High School College program is designed to allow high school students to take college level classes and receive college credit upon completion. Classes are taught onsite at the high school by OCC faculty.

Transfer DegreesOCC offers the Associate Degree for Transfer (AA-T/AS-T) pathway that eases the transfer process for students to transfer to a California State University campus. Upon earning these degrees, students will be guaranteed admission to a CSU campus with junior standing Students are also given priority consideration for admission to a CSU campus that offers a program that has been designated as “similar” by California State University.

OCC Youth CareerConnectThe project allows students to partake in a four-week academy cohort setting each summer. The students are immersed in direct “hands-on” classroom curriculum designed to connect student interest and career paths to employment, certification, or degree attainment.

What is STEM2?Courses and disciplines in Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics are referred to and grouped under the acronym STEM2. More than just classroom teaching, Orange Coast College believes that STEM2 is an interdisciplinary and applied approach that is coupled with real-world, problem-based learning.

OCC excels in preparing students for careers in some of the fastest growing technology sectors in the economy. STEM2 strengths across a wide range of disciplines; make for a robust student learning experience, with opportunities for collaboration and innovation.

STEM2 MattersA STEM2 student is not only an innovator and critical thinker, but is an agent for change that can make meaningful connections between education, community, the economy, and is versed in global issues.

It is not sufficient in today’s global economy for a nation to have a generally skilled and educated workforce. Increasingly, the specific skills in STEM2 education fuel the innovative processes that are especially valuable. These skills are sought by organizations across the nation and the world.

STEM2 OutlookCollege graduates with STEM2 degrees have more opportunities and face a brighter job market than others. The United States Department of Commerce estimates that STEM2 occupations will experience growth 1.7 times faster than non-STEM2 occupations in the coming decade. In order to meet workforce demands, the United States will need at least 1 million more STEM2 professionals than are projected to graduate by 2018.

There is solid evidence to suggest that the fastest-growing and highest-wage jobs in future years will be in STEM2 fields and all employees will need to utilize STEM2 skills for problem solving in a wide range of industries.

Having a major in STEM2 cannot only enhance your college experience, but can lead to many exciting opportunities in life.

OCC Math MeetSince 1957, Orange Coast College has proudly presented the OCC Math Meet – an annual mathematics competition for local high school students. This friendly contest offers students the opportunity to demonstrate their math skills, win prizes, meet others who excel in mathematics, and learn about math and science programs here at OCC.

OCC Science NightMore than 5,000 elementary school students and their families descend on OCC every year to take part in the institution’s Science Night. Theme for exhibits include robots on parade, stargazing with high-powered telescopes, crawly creatures from the sea, bones and skeletons, airplanes, helicopters, volcanic rocks and dinosaur bones.

Becoming Math Confident AcademyMath can be intimidating to students uncomfortable with the subject. Designed for students who have placed in practical math or pre-algebra and struggle with anxiety about math, Becoming Math Confident Academy is a learning community that allows for individual and small group counseling for participants. Students learn skills to manage their anxiety and build confidence in learning math, learn stress reduction techniques, math study skills, math test taking skills and time management.
