Page 1: Step by Step Development of Newspaper

These are the stages I took from developing my newspaper; I decided to start developing my newspaper with page 2 first. I began with adding the first headline of the page and worked around it from there. It was a true definition of trial and error, but in the long run I believe that my newspaper has been developed to its best capacity and is aesthetically pleasing and fits into the target audiences views well.

These photos show the process in which I added my fonts, adverts, pictures and headlines. I believe this step-by-step guide shows how I developed my newspaper using inDesign programme.

To the left I decided to try and add my first advertisement. I was not completely sure on where to locate it on the page but with moving it around I decided that this was the best place to have it. (The red recycling advert on the bottom left of the page)

This image shows how I developed my 2 columns on the side. I looked at other papers to see what they produced on their second page. It does follow similar conventions to other papers but the colours and layout is original and my idea.It says about contact information, sources for stories etc. I decided to also include a little “History” section that allows you to see how, when and why the paper was created. I also had an idea that as it was a local paper I would include a hotline for publishing adverts. I thought this would appeal to my audience, as it is a good way to advertise.

The next stage of developing my page two was to add two more adverts. These included a advert for a new car (Vauxhall Corsa) and a sport advert, which advertised upcoming fixtures for a local London football team (Charlton).

I produced these adverts by using Photoshop.

To fill up the space I added a photo matching the headline for page 2. This photo was taken in Cambridge at the Kent Cup Finals for Hockey. I took this photo when I went to watch my old school team perform in the final.

I feel that the second page fits together well is aesthetically pleasing. I am happy with this page overall but I feel I could (if there was more time) edit it to make it look more professional as I feel it has certain aspects that makes it look like a magazine.

This is the front page of my newspaper. Before starting to create any part of my newspaper (layout, stories, photographs etc.) I wanted to design the Newspaper Title Design. I wanted it to stand out but not be too brightly coloured or be seen as an eyesore.

After creating the title I decided to apply my 2 headlines. The Main headline can be seen at the top of the newspaper. This is about my hard case story, so I felt that this should be the main headline with the success story of a local band (Blueprint) following it.

After adding my headlines I wrote my stories. This was a difficult process, as I have never written in a style that newspapers use. This was a challenge that I overcome by researching and reading other newspapers that targeted a similar audience to mine.

It was also difficult to apply the right margin size and gutter space, but referring to research I did before the production of my newspaper helped me to tackle this problem.

I wanted to produce an advert that would appeal and be beneficial to my targeted audience. So I decided to add a Half Price Pitch Hire coupon for Goals. Goals are a company that hires out Astroturf G4 pitches. As my target audience is towards the younger generation, I feel that they would be interested in something similar to this.

This is the final page for page 1. I am happy with the layout and how it fits together. I think its aesthetics are more appealing than page 2 and I feel that it suits my target audience well.

The photographs of Blueprint were taken at a gig in Gravesend. I took many photos so I could go through them and decide which one to use at the end. I’m happy with this photo as it shows the whole bang in one shot and the colours and positioning of the band members.
