Stetho-Scoop Summer Edition
July 2016 Volume 2/Issue 2
Letter from FlexRN:
Summertime and the hot weather has arrived folks! We hope this summer is treating you well thus far. Summer is a special season for community celebrations, vacations spent with family and friends, and eventually the gradual transition to autumn. We feel there is something different about the summer. Normal routine life tends to slow down just a bit, grilled outdoor meals are aplenty and an overall relaxing feeling takes ahold of us.
While summer can be relaxing in lots of ways and maybe you too will choose to take the summer months off, keep in mind it is also a terrific time to do some exploring! We aren’t just a Northern Virginia based nurse agency; we work with clients and facilities nationwide; from coast-to-coast. So if your seriously considering summer nursing work, just know that FlexRN offers a multitude of travel contracts all over the United States that you will want to check out! You can also get details about our summer contracts at any time by contacting your personal FlexRN scheduler, or if you are new to FlexRN, please feel free to contact our recruitment team to learn more at recruit [email protected]. Just because summer is a generally slower paced season, that doesn’t mean we will be slowing down at FlexRN! We will be keeping busy for our RN’s all summer long. You can be sure that you will always be able to reach us 24/7, 365 days a year!
As always, we thank you for your readership and we hope you enjoy this summer edition of the Stetho-Scoop. Stay safe and savor your summer RN’s!
Graciously,
The FlexRN Team

5 Books About Nurses for Your
Summer Reading List

Blog for the American Association of Nurse
Assessment Coordination
This year, we have five new book recommendations with nurses as the main characters. Two of our picks are historical fiction. Two, are collections of true stories about nurses, and the fifth pick is a little bit of a mixture of both.
We hope you have an opportunity to enjoy a great book this summer.
Happy Reading from FlexRN!
The Nightingales of Troy
In this collection of 10 linked short stories, acclaimed American poet Alice Fulton traces the female line of ancestry of an Irish Catholic family living in Troy, New York
as each woman confronts life’s deepest dilemmas.
I Wasn't Strong Like This When I Started Out: True Stories of Becoming a Nurse
Nurses and non-nurse readers alike will be moved by this anthology of tales from the front lines of healthcare. Written by veteran nurses and nurses-in-training, this collection of true stories examines the experiences and life-changing moments in a nurse’s career that ultimately make her/him a better nurse.
Juliet's Nurse: A Novel
Reimagining one of literature’s greatest love stories, Lois Leveen blends historical fiction with a Shakespearean classic to provide a sort of
prequel to Romeo and Juliet. Beginning just before Juliet’s birth, Leveen explores a different love story — the love between a grieving nurse and the child she raised.
The Rose of Sebastopol
Katharine McMahon’s 2010 novel is a fictional account of a young nurse named Rosa who travels to the Crimean battlefield with Florence Nightingale's nursing corps. Follow Rosa’s epic journey as she leaves behind the domestic quiet of London for the foothills of Italy and then the ravaged Russian landscape of the Crimea.
We Band of Angels: The Untold Story of American Nurses Trapped on Bataan by the Japanese
When the Japanese took the Philippines during WWII, 77 American women, navy and army nurses, were caught on Bataan and later imprisoned by the Japanese. Author Elizabeth Norman interviewed 20 of these nurses, who held steady in their devotion to their patients and their country in the face of bombing, starvation, and the gruesome injuries and diseases of their charges. In his review, historian Stephen Ambrose wrote, “Americans today should thank God we had such women.”
Easy Summer Recipes for Busy
Nurses Recipes Courtesy of NurseTogether.com,
onebusynurse.com, and theliveinkitchen.com
Summer is near and as a nursing professional, you probably like to spend your time off relaxing and not having to put a lot of
energy into meals that are difficult or time consuming to
make. Here are a few great summer recipes for busy nurses
who enjoy grilling and refreshing treats but want the
preparation to be quick and simple.
Chicken Kabobs
If you have never made kabobs before, do not worry. This is a perfectly simple and delicious
recipe for those fond of chicken.
INGREDIENTS: 4 skinless, boneless chicken breast halves -
- cubed
1 large green bell pepper, cut into 2 inch pieces
1 onion, cut into wedges
1 large red bell pepper, cut into 2 inch pieces
1 cup barbeque sauce (substitute with any of your
favorite marinades)
Skewers
INSTRUCTIONS: Preheat grill on high heat. Thread the chicken, green bell pepper, onion, and
red bell pepper pieces onto the skewers alternately. Lightly oil
the grill grate. Place the kabobs on the prepared grill, and brush
with barbeque sauce. Cook, turning and brushing with
barbeque sauce frequently for 15 minutes or until chicken
juices run clear.
Vanilla Berry Coconut Popsicles
These grown-up cream-sicles have everything you want in a fresh summer dessert — a hint
of tropical coconut, vanilla-kissed blueberries, light dairy
that allows the honey-sweetened pop to pause on your tongue. At just over 80 calories per pop, you can put your feet
up and bite into summer without a hint of remorse.
INGREDIENTS: 1/3 cup nonfat plain Greek yogurt
1/3 cup canned lite coconut milk
1/2 tsp. pure vanilla extract
3 tsp. raw honey, divided use
2 cups fresh or frozen blueberries
1/4 cup water
INSTRUCTIONS: Combine yogurt, coconut milk, extract, and 1 tsp. honey in a medium bowl; mix well. Pour yogurt
mixture evenly into ice pop molds; freeze for at least two
hours, or until partially set. Place blueberries, water, and
remaining 2 tsp. honey in blender; cover. Blend until
smooth. Slowly pour blueberry mixture evenly into ice pop
molds; freeze for at least four hours, or until set.
Single Serving Lemonade
This recipe makes a sweet little glass of lemonade in about five
minutes. Minimal juicing, maximum enjoyment.
INGREDIENTS: 2 Tablespoons granulated sugar
¼ cup hot water
3 tablespoons fresh-squeezed lemon juice (I used about 1½
small organic lemons)
¾ cup cold water
Ice
Lemon slices (optional)
INSTRUCTIONS: In a 2 or 4 cup measuring cup, stir together the
sugar and hot water until the sugar is dissolved. Stir in the
lemon juice and cold water. Fill a large glass or pint mason jar
with ice and several lemon.
