It is a race that often produces a

Melbourne Cup candidate, including subsequent Flemington third Il Paradiso

(Galileo) last year. However, the leading contender is likely to be John Gosden’s

bonny mare Enbihaar as she steps up to the two miles for the first time.

Racing in the Shadwell blue and white - just like her Australian

namesake, Group 2 winner Enbihaar (Magnus), who was also owned by

Sheikh Hamdan - the English Enbihaar is one of the leading lights from

Redoute’s Choice’s two seasons in which he shuttled to France.

In 2013 and 2014, the Arrowfield stalwart stood at the Aga Khan’s

Haras de Bonneval, covering some of Europe’s finest mares.

Enbihaar’s dam Chanterelle (Trempolino) may not have been a

leading light among that group, which included Zarkava (Zamindar),

Born Gold (Blushing Groom) and Shareta (Sinndar), but the exploits of

her daughter have put her in rare territory.

Redoute’s Choice has provided the Shadwell operation with plenty of

success: a Blue Diamond Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner in Nadeem, three

South African top-level winners in Rafeef, Mustaaqeem and Majmu and

a stallion prospect with Elzaam. However, Enbihaar is the icing on the

cake, the perfect addition to an already fruitful relationship, according to

Sheikh Hamdan’s racing manager Angus Gold.

“We’ve bought a lot of Redoute’s Choice yearlings over the years and we’ve

had some particularly good ones,” Gold told ANZ Bloodstock News yesterday.

“Nadeem was from his first crop - annoyingly I was the underbidder on Miss

Finland, which was a pity - but we’ve also had the two brothers, Rafeef and

Mustaaqeem and Majmu, who was a champion, a fabulous filly.

“We also sent nine mares down to Australia from Europe to be covered

by Redoute’s Choice to northern hemisphere time and they came back here.

From the eight foals that were returned, three of those were stakes winners.

“We then bought a little horse called Elzaam who we bought at

Deauville and was second in the Coventry at Ascot as a two-year-old.

“He has had a massive influence on us, really. From our point of

view, Nadeem was early days and we got a stallion from his first crop,

Majmu, the sprinting brothers and now Enbihaar. We’ve also got some

lovely broodmares on the farm in Australia by Redoute’s, and he’s doing

a wonderful job as a broodmare sire as we all know, so hopefully his

influence will live on for a long time to come.

“He was an extraordinary, exceptional stallion. His name will appear for

a long time to come - both through his sons and his daughters. He was an

amazing horse, a horse of incredible presence when you saw him; a big, strong,

scopey horse. It was amazing he was as athletic as he was for the size of him.

“It’s lovely to finish off with one of the last of his progeny over here to

be as good as she is.”

A Listed winner at just her fourth start when she had just turned

four, taking the Daisy Warwick Fillies’ Stakes (Listed, 1m 4f), she added

three Group 2 wins during her four-year-old season last year, taking the

Lancashire Oaks (Gr 2, 1m 4f), the Lillie Langtry Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 6f) and

the Park Hill Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 6.5f) in succession.

Last start, Enbihaar added a second Lillie Langtry to her record,

setting her up for a tilt against the males in the Lonsdale Cup. It is another

unlikely step in a career that Gold says has been filled with surprises.

“It was amazing to me that he (Sheikh Hamdan) kept her in training as a

five-year-old,” Gold said. “In my 34 years he’s only ever done that once before,

and that was probably 30 years ago. They normally all retire as three-year-olds,

and we kept her in training as she never really had a chance as a three-year-old.

“She was very immature and had a few niggling problems, so therefore

we persuaded him to keep her in training as a four-year-old. And then

luckily he decided to keep her in training again. He was enjoying her so

much last year. She will definitely go to stud at the end of this year.

“We were pressing him to keep another filly, Nazeef, in training, and

luckily he agreed to it and she’s gone on and won a Group 1 this year, so

that was satisfying. And on the back of her he decided to keep Enbihaar in

training as well. She’s very lightly raced and had her enthusiasm still and

enjoyed her racing, so that always helps.

“Enbihaar has this fantastic action - a lovely galloping stride on her.

We think she’ll get the two miles, so we’ll see, but she’s done us proud

whatever, she’s been a star and kept her enthusiasm going the whole way.”

Significantly, victory would give the late Redoute’s Choice another

milestone with his first Group winner at two miles.

While Redoute’s Choice was a top sprinter-miler and is renowned as

a producer of similar stock, he has proven versatile in the stallion barn.

Classy fillies Miss Finland, Samantha Miss and Royal Descent were able

to win from sprint trips to the mile and a half of an Oaks, while his Derby

winners have included Wylie Hall, Redoute’s Dancer, Howard Be Thy

Name, Empires Choice and the filly Dariana.

He has had one stakes-winning two-

miler before in La Amistad, who took out the Andrew Ramsden Stakes

(Listed, 3200m) at Flemington in 2015. She had as good a pedigree as any

to handle the Flemington 3200 metres as a three-quarter sister to three-

time Melbourne Cup winner Makybe Diva (Desert King).

“Like all good stallions, he could throw anything,” Gold said. “On the

whole they are shorter runners than what she is, but she’s from a stout

European family. I think also the other thing, like with so many horses -

like Fastnet Rock for example - is that when Redoute’s Choice came over

here all the Europeans thought, ‘he’s a fast horse, we’ll send some staying

mares to him’ and on the whole, what you get out of that is staying horses.

“A lot of breeders expected the stallions to put speed into their slower mares

and it didn’t always work. And this mare, there’s a bit of stamina in there.”

The Melbourne Cup would be an unlikely target for Enbihaar in any

given year, but particularly one in which travel restrictions are heightened

due to Covid-19. Instead, she is likely to travel across the English Channel

once more to try and snare that elusive Group 1 win in the Prix de Royallieu

(Gr 1, 1m 6f) on Arc weekend.

The other leading Melbourne Cup lead-up comes with Saturday’s

Ebor (1m 6f), traditionally the richest handicap in Europe and last year

worth £1 million (A$1.82 million), although this year the prize fund stands

at just a quarter of that amount.

Australian-owned horses Pondus (Sea The Moon), Le Don De Vie

(Leroidesanimaux) and Almania (Australia) will try to advance their

claims for a Melbourne campaign, while horses like Trueshan (Planteur)

have also been the subject of offers from Australian buyers.

The Phoenix Thoroughbreds-owned Deja (Youmzain), considered

a potential Ebor contender, is also a potential visitor after the operation

announced last week it was pulling out of British racing.

Day 1 of Ebor Festival to produce other Australian clues

Tonight’s Juddmonte International (Gr 1, 1m 2.5f) has been used

by Cox Plate (Gr 1, 2040m) aspirants before, although the withdrawal of

Aspetar (Al Kazeem) means that it is unlikely to be a guide this year.

"I wasn't convinced his last piece of work was up to scratch,” the five-

year-old’s trainer Roger Charlton told Racing Post. “We did a routine

blood test on him this morning, got the results this evening and decided it

wouldn't be right for him to run in a Group 1 race.

“There aren't any obvious targets, but the Prix Dollar on Arc weekend

is a possibility. We are still considering going to Australia for the Cox Plate,

but that will depend on the Australian authorities. Ultimately the Emir's

Trophy in Qatar in February will be high on his agenda."

The Great Voltigeur Stakes (Gr 2, 1m 4f), the primary lead-in to next

month’s St Leger (Gr 1, 1m 6.5f), has also proven a strong pointer to

Melbourne success in recent years.

Not since 2006 has the race been absent either a horse who would do

his future racing in Australia or a horse who would perform in our biggest

races. Of the five runners last year, winner Logician (Frankel) went on to

land the St Leger, runner-up Constantinople (Galileo) started favourite in

the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) at his next start and third-placed Norway

(Galileo) joined Chris Waller at the start of 2020.

In 2018, Cross Counter (Teofilo) was runner-up to his stablemate Old

Persian (Dubawi); at his next start, he took out the Melbourne Cup (Gr 1,

3200m).

Bluebloods Mogul (Galileo) for Aidan O'Brien and John Gosden's

Darain (Dubawi) head the market, with both likely to progress to the

St Leger. Neither are likely to be seen in Australia this spring, although

Mogul does hold a Cox Plate entry.

Birthday boy Richards plots Melody Belle bouncebackYoung gun Jamie Richards turned 31 yesterday,

but even on his birthday, he was still focusing on

his number one passion - the horses. Richards

is hopeful that Melody Belle (Commands) can

bounce back from a disappointing first-up run

in the Missile Stakes (Gr 2, 1200m) by taking

home Saturday’s Winx Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m)

at Randwick. “We have just got to put a line

through that run, turn the page and get on with

it,” Richards said. “There were a couple of things

against her, she was first-up on an unsuitable

wet track and got back in a small field and

struggled to make ground. Her sectionals say

she still ran OK and we have been happy with

her at home. Kerrin (McEvoy) rang after the

race and said he should probably have been

fourth rather than back last in hindsight. He

said don’t worry, she ran OK and will improve.

She had a good blow.” As of last night, Melody

Belle was on the third line of betting at $8 with

TAB, with Master Of Wine (Maxios) and Verry

Elleegant (Zed) equal favourites at $5.

New season, same rivalry for ProbabeelAlso returning for Jamie Richards on Saturday is

Probabeel (Savabeel), with the Surround Stakes

(Gr 1, 1400m) winner set to step out in the Show

County Quality (Gr 3, 1200m). There, she is

likely to face her old sparring partner Funstar

(Adelaide), with the pair filling the quinella on

four occasions, including twice at Group 1 level.

“They have a good rivalry and I’m sure Funstar

will be in good form,” Richards said. “(Probabeel)

doesn’t overexert herself in her trials. She will be

vulnerable first-up and will probably find it short

of her best, there is no doubt about that. I think

she is in a good enough spot to be competitive.

You only have to look at her trial at Avondale

before she went to Australia last spring to know

that she needs a bit of motivating.”

Maher weighing up Winx for Prague

Ciaron Maher is considering a tilt at Saturday's

Winx Stakes at Randwick with valuable three-

year-old Prague (Redoute's Choice). Should he

line up, Prague will be just the third to take on

older horses in the past 20 years and both the

others, Trusting (Tale Of The Cat) and Lonhro

(Octagonal), won. Prague was a multiple Group

winner last year and was placed in the Sires'

Produce Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m) and Maher is

confident that he is up to it. "He's one of our best

colts," Maher told Racing.com. "They get the

weight relief and he's a good horse. To do what he

did last preparation was phenomenal as he was

very raw, and I thought he did a great job and he'll

only improve in every way."

Wine set to follow Northerly pathTeam Hawke-trained Master Of Wine will also

head to Victoria and line up in the Winx Stakes

as connections get him ready to take aim at both

the Caulfield Cup (Gr 1, 2400m) and Cox Plate

(Gr 1, 2040m). He completed a barrier trial at

Rosehill yesterday, which pleased owner Rupert

Legh, who said the plan is to peak on Caulfield

Cup Day, but that the Cox Plate was certainly

on the agenda as well. "You take it one step at a

time," Legh told Racing.com. "But you go through

the Winx Stakes and then we may well bring him

down here to Melbourne in preparation for a

campaign towards the Caulfield Cup. That (Cox

Plate) is a race that's been on our agenda. But you

have target races and I think the Hawkes (stable)

are well known for targeting horses towards a race

and ultimately I would say the Caulfield Cup is the

impression I get is where they want to head with

him. Then all going well you could then target the

Cox Plate for him because you don't need to do

much with them after a mile-and-a-half run, you

just keep them fresh for the 2000-metre race. You

set a horse for a particular race and then anything

after that is a bonus."

Three-from-three as a mum for More JoyousBest Ever (Snitzel) became the latest debut winner

out of eighth-time Group 1 winner More Joyous

(More Than Ready) as the colt took out the Magic

Millions Plate (1400m) at Pakenham yesterday.

More Joyous won seven of her nine first-up runs

and has an excellent record as a broodmare with

her first two foals, Woman (by Frankel) and More

Sundays (Fastnet Rock), both also scoring on

debut. Trained by Peter Moody, Best Ever drifted

in the market before his run but put up a strong

performance to score by three-quarters of a

length and looks one to watch. "We'll just try and

build on today," Moody told Racing.com. "We're

not going to get too excited and name Caulfield

Guineas or anything like that (as goals), but we'll

find a nice 64 somewhere in the next few weeks."

Nature Strip shines in trialThe Everest (1200m) favourite Nature Strip

(Nicconi) demonstrated why he is held in such

high regard for the $15 million race with another

effortless trial success at Rosehill yesterday.

The Chris Waller-trained Nature Strip, who

is likely to be named last season’s Australian

Horse of the Year, was in first gear under James

McDonald, cruising home for a five and a half

length win over highly-touted mare Fituese

(Deep Field) in the 900-metre trial. "He's come

back in good order, hasn't lost any speed and

he's a bit smarter in the way he is executing."

McDonald told Sky Thoroughbred Central. "He

seems pretty forward, even though he has a bit

to go in his coat, he will improve off his first-

up run and get better as his preparation gets

deeper. I think he's in a better place for sure."

Nature Strip is set to return in the Concorde

Stakes (Gr 3, 1000m) on September 5.

Peltzer on fire at Rosehill trialsOn a hot morning of barrier trials at Rosehill,

one horse who really stamped himself as a

horse to watch this spring is the unbeaten

Peltzer (So You Think). The Gerald Ryan-trained

three-year-old played up behind the barriers

but once the gates opened, it was all business.

While Ryan said pre-trial that he wanted Peltzer

to have a strong hit out, he looked to do it with

ease, holding Blossom Star (Foxwedge) and

Kindergarten Stakes (Gr 3, 1100m) winner

Doubtland (Not A Single Doubt) to win

comfortably. “He was never a brilliant trialler,

which was why they put up 20/1 at Kembla (on

debut),” Ryan told Sky Thoroughbred Central.

“His trial was good this morning. He fired up a

little bit because of the mishap before the trial,

but I’m happy with where he is at. He had a little

blow, but I’m sure he’ll improve off it.” Peltzer

will resume in the San Domenico Stakes (Gr 3,

1100m) Saturday week.

Sentimental Miss pleases at first Sydney outingLast year’s New Zealand Oaks (Gr 1, 2400m)

winner Sentimental Miss (Reliable Man) made a

pleasing start to her Sydney spring preparation,

winning her 1100-metre trial for Group-class

horses at Rosehill yesterday. She began well from

her barrier to settle just in behind the leader and

travelled generously through the early stages.

Approaching the home turn, jockey Hugh

Bowman angled her into clear galloping room

and she was able to finish off nicely to win by a

long head. “Hugh was very happy with her trial

this morning,” trainer Chris Waller said. “He said

her fitness levels are good and if we wanted to

go to a 1600-metre race first-up it would be no

problem. Obviously she hasn't done a lot of work

since being in Sydney and it was either trialling

this morning or next week, but now we have got

the trial into her I can give her a quiet week ahead,

continue putting a little bit of condition on her

and have her in the best possible shape going into

her first-up run.”

Glenfiddich set for rare tilt at MemsieTrainer Peter Moody gave new acquisition

Glenfiddich (Fastnet Rock) an exhibition gallop

with Group 1 winner Gatting (Hard Spun)

between races at Pakenham yesterday and is

now considering running the colt first-up in

the Memsie Stakes (Gr 1, 1400m). He would be

the first three-year-old in 25 years to take on the

race first-up and the trainer thinks that the 1400

metres would be ideal for the horse. "Seven

furlongs seems a lovely trip for the horse. So

why piss around (with) shorter races?" Moody

told Racing.com. "I had the option to run him

Saturday at 1100 metres and that, but I just don't

think (it's worth it). Fourteen hundred metres is

a lovely trip for him, no weight on his back, 50.5

kilograms. And let's be honest with a lack of the

Sydney horses here we might not run into a field

of superstars and I think this colt is a very (high)

quality colt. Why not, it's a Group 1 and I think

he's a Group 1 horse. But we will let the dust settle,

take him home. He will either go to the Memsie or

the McNeil at 1200 metres on the same day."

Bella Vella pleasing Clarken Sangster Stakes (Gr 1, 1200m) winner Bella

Vella (Commands) pleased Will Clarken with

her jump-out at Morphettville yesterday and

the trainer is working towards a return in the

McEwen Stakes (Gr 2, 1000m) on September 5 for

the five-year-old. "Rapt with her this morning,"

Clarken told Racing.com. "(She) came out nice

and steady. She is just happy to relax, this mare,

this preparation like she was last and got into a

nice rhythm. There wasn't a lot of depth to the

trial, but she went with a maiden horse and just

got the upper hand of it and strung out the rest of

the field. (She) pulled up really well so she will go

ten days into a 1000-metre open trial and that'll be

ten days before the McEwen, so preparation looks

lovely."

Hyeronimus banned for three yearsGroup 1-winning jockey Adam Hyeronimus

will not be allowed to ride again until 2023

after he was sentenced yesterday for betting

offences. Hyeronimus, who won his first Group

1 aboard Shout The Bar (Not A Single Doubt)

in the Vinery Stud Stakes (Gr 1, 2000m) in

March, was found guilty last month of having

an interest in 30 bets on thoroughbred races

over a two-year period, as well as giving false

evidence to stewards. Hyeronimus placed

the bets through his cousin, stablehand Blake

Paine, who has also been disqualified for two

years and four months. The rider, who just last

Saturday partnered Taikomochi (Snitzel) to win

the Premier’s Cup Prelude (1800m), will begin

his suspension immediately, although he is

likely to appeal his sentence.

V’landys wins court bid against ABCRacing NSW chief Peter V’landys won a technical

but significant victory in his defamation case

against the ABC after a judge ruled on Monday

that internal documents shared by employees

were to be made available for review. V’landys

faced cameras for the ABC’s 7:30 program last

year to speak about treatment of racehorses. In his

interview he outlined the steps his organisation

had taken to stop retired thoroughbreds being

sent to knackeries in New South Wales. When

broadcast, the ABC spliced his interview with

footage of horses being butchered in a Queensland

abattoir. V’landys claims he was defamed and the

Holland fined for misconductGroup 1-winning jockey Dean Holland has been

fined $1000 by Victorian stewards after pleading

guilty to a misconduct charge stemming from his

ride on Telemarketer (Time Thief) at Ballarat on

August 11. The incident happened when he struck

the horse in the vicinity of the head whilst loading

into the barriers. The stewards took into account

his guilty plea, his remorse for his actions, his

record and the fact that the gelding was fractious

while being loaded.

Pollett, Lambourne guilty on conduct chargePunter Glenn Pollett has been found guilty of a

conduct charge for comments he made on an

online show, the Racing Rant alongside fellow

panellist Marc Lambourne, on April 20 suggesting

that jockey James McDonald was betting on races.

Both he and Lambourne were ordered to face

stewards and were charged under AR228(a) for

conduct prejudicial to the image of racing earlier

this year. Lambourne also faced additional charges

for posting the content as well as failure and/or

refusal to comply with a stewards direction. "The

stewards find that irrespective of whether Mr

Lambourne and Mr Pollett felt they were joking

when the relevant segment of the Racing Rant

program commenced, the stewards find that the

third element of blameworthy conduct against

both Mr Lambourne and Mr Pollett is established,"

the stewards report read. The stewards are yet to set

a date for submissions of penalty.

Glory Days returns from retirementAuckland Cup (Gr 1, 3200m) winner Glory Days

(Red Giant) returned from retirement at the

Foxton trials yesterday where she finished fourth

in her 1000-metre heat. The Bill Thurlow-trained

eight-year-old failed to fire after returning from

her campaign in Melbourne last spring and was

subsequently retired after her fourth in the New

Zealand St Leger (Listed, 2600m) at Trentham in

March. However, after her sale fell through, her

connections elected to bring her back into work and

she could once again be on a feature-race path this

spring, with the Windsor Park Plate (Gr 1, 1600m)

and Livamol Classic (Gr 1, 2040m) at Hastings on

her radar. “The pending sale didn’t happen and just

with what is going on around the world it wasn’t that

easy to do much with her so we decided we may as

well put her back in work and see how we got on,”

Thurlow said. “She has had a really good long spell,

she has been vetted and is 100 per cent sound and

looks good, so we may as well carry on.”

Hong Kong season opener changedThe Hong Kong racing season will now begin

day was controversially postponed for a year. The

election meant that the season was due to start on

opening day - traditionally one of the biggest betting

days on the calendar - to its usual Sunday spot.

Decision time looms for GrayAfter 20 years in Singapore, trainer Stephen Gray

is planning to weigh up his future lifestyle options

within the next couple of years. Gray formerly

trained in New Zealand with his father Kevin for

12 seasons from 1988-99, the partnership winning

almost 400 races, including ten stakes races.

But he saw the opportunity in 2000 to take the

plunge and attempt to carve out a career training

in Singapore and his move in April that year has

seen him establish himself as one of Singapore’s

leading trainers with almost 800 wins to his credit.

“From that first brigade that came in around the

same time, only Michael Clements and I are still

here training,” Gray said. “When I first came here

it was a dream. I was the youngest trainer here

and I thought I’d give it five years, then it became

ten years and I’ve ended up staying 20 years. I saw

a future. It was really exciting. The first ten years

were great, but the last ten years it has changed

a lot and it hasn’t been as positive. Don’t get me

wrong, I’m still happy to be training here. But, like

everyone, I’ll be interested to see how the next 12

to 18 months will go. With what has happened

here and all around the world with Covid-19,

we’re all not sure where we’re all heading.”

Francis (Frank) Joseph Patrick

Bullock (1885 - 1946) was the

most successful jockey at home

and abroad of the remarkable

Australians who ventured overseas in the first

decade of the twentieth century.

Bullock was inducted into the Australian

Racing Hall of Fame in 2006 and is one of only

14 jockeys with a place in Sport Australia’s

broader and outstanding Hall of Fame.

Sport Australia describes Bullock as

“Australia’s first truly international jockey”

which is a more than reasonable claim given his

success in England, France and Germany, but

I’d argue that tag should be shared with fellow

pre-World War I travellers Frank Wootton and

Bernard “Brownie” Carslake.

The case for Bullock heading the pioneers

would be pinned on his greater success in Australia

during and after the time of his travels, plus his win

in the inaugural Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe in 1920

- a race he claimed again two years later but one

which eluded Carslake and Wootton.

He won his first race in England in 1903,

three years before the arrival of those fellow

Australians, and won the Melbourne Cup in

1905 on Blue Spec before returning to England

where his many credits included riding nine

winners in four days at Royal Ascot and

finishing second to Steve Donoghue in the

jockeys championship in 1921 (and perhaps

also in other years but the records are scant).

Bullock said Donoghue was the “best

jockey he saw”.

He also won two Caulfield Cups at “home” and

his major race wins aboard also included the Ascot

Gold Cup, English 1,000 Guineas, the Oaks, Sussex

Stakes, Coronation Cup, the Cesarewitch and the

St James’s Palace Stakes; the Eclipse Stakes and

Champion Stakes twice plus the Dewhurst and

Middle Park Stakes on three occasions.

He was three times second in the Derby.

He was champion jockey in Germany

five years straight from 1908 - that success

coinciding with Frank Wootton’s four straight

championships in Britain from 1909 to 1912 -

and is reported to have ridden more than 500

winners in Germany and Austria.

A curiosity of that time is that Bullock had

ridden, before World War I, a horse named

Cyklon for the German emperor, Kaiser

Wilhelm II. The Kaiser sent Cyklon to England

to race, but with the outbreak of war, the British

government took possession of the horse. After

the war, Frank arranged for Cyklon to be sent to

Australia where he sired the 1927 Melbourne

Cup winner, Trivalve.

Trivalve won the Cup in the hands of

Bullock’s brother-in-law Bobbie Lewis who

would later teach, to ride, another of our

“Incomparables” Ron Hutchinson. It was

Lewis’s fourth Cup win. Bullock was married to

Lewis’s sister Martha.

Bullock high on Racing Post list

Bullock was rated 14th best in the Racing

Post’s list of the top 50 flat jockeys of the 20th

century. Only Frank Wootton (9th), Scobie

Breasley (10th) and Bernard “Brownie”

Carslake (12th) were - among his countrymen

- ranked above him.

John Richardson, reader and former

journalist (among myriad other hats worn in

the racing and breeding industry), is able to

provide some detail of Bullock’s career through

general recollection and his own “scribblings”

published in The Informant in New Zealand.

“Apart from horses and horses' pedigrees,

my other great interest is family history,”

Richardson emailed me last week, “and you

can imagine the thrill I got when a few years

back when I discovered that Frank Bullock was

a distant relative of my mother who came, I

thought, from a non-horsey background.

“His mother Eleanor Jane Wrathall and

my mum were first cousins twice removed.

Frank Bullock’s grandfather Francis Wrathall

and mum's great grandmother Mary Ann were

brother and sister in a family of 14 kids”.

Richardson, in The Informant, wrote:

“Francis Patrick Bullock was born in 1884 at

Heathcote, Victoria.”

His father James Bullock is listed as hailing

from Wild Duck (Creek) near Heathcote. This

strikes a chord with me as you won’t find a

more sumptuous red wine than the Wild Duck

Creek Estate Springflat Shiraz (now produced

in that hamlet).

Jockeypedia says Bullock came to England

in 1903 after “having enjoyed great success in

both Australia and Europe”. If that was so, then

that success (in Europe) and travel came before

his 18th birthday which seems remarkable

for such a young man and at a time when the

journey by ship took at least 45 days.

The motivation might simply have been to

make money. Hard to believe now but then,

and in the years immediately after World War

II, it was more lucrative riding in England and

Europe than in Australia.

We do know, as fact, that Bullock went to

Germany before “returning to England” shortly

before the outbreak of war.

The Kalgoorlie Sun, in 1910, reported that

Bullock “had long been riding in big money

races, and as he has been careful, he is now a

man of means. He is the possessor of some fine

property in Melbourne while his bank balance

is a handy one.”

Bullock’s exploits were of interest in that

part of Western Australia as his father James

(Jim), noted as a well-known horseman,

was described as either manager or

proprietor of the Exchange Hotel,

Coolgardie.

The Sun reported that Bullock

was riding for the Royal Gratitz Stud

at Hoppegarten on an annual retainer

of £1250. It estimated his base annual

income at about £2,000 - including other

smaller retainers, expenses and private

trial riding fees - exclusive of winning

percentages. That sum, £2,000, was

about eight times more than a manager

would earn in Australia in 1910.

As to his later income in England,

Bullock said: “Once a jockey is

established, he makes more in England

than he could in Australia because

there are more rich owners.”

Renowned Australian racing writer Bert

Wolfe (Cardigan) recalled Bullock’s liking for

German racing when he wrote, in 1929, that it

was the money which would lure James Munro

to Germany the following year - to ride for

Baron Oppenheim, as had Bullock.

“Bullock once told me he much preferred

riding in Germany than France,” Wolfe wrote.

“For one thing, he said the German jockeys are

not so good, and as a result, are more easily

beaten than the French….and if you happen

to beat a short-priced favourite at one of the

leading French tracks, the crowd say and throw

things at you but in Germany the racing public

are more phlegmatic. They yell 'Hoch' a couple

of times, and then go and drown their sorrows

in a stein of beer."

It’s not clear, after hours of searching

newspaper archives, whether Bullock had to

leave Germany in haste. We know his career

flourished back in England and, despite his

liking for racing in Germany, he was happy to

regularly plunder good class races in France

- often travelling by plane with his friend and

rival Donoghue.

Donoghue wrote a newspaper column,

at the time, and once mused that Bullock had

thought he was deaf after returning from France

after all-night partying had followed a major

win. All was right after Donohue reminded

Bullock that his ears were stuffed with cotton

wool which they’d inserted on the advice of the

pilot before the crossing.

Bullock retired from race riding in 1925,

candidly admitting he’d lost his nerve. “At 40

years of age when I should be in my prime, I feel

old and shaken. I’ve had five bad falls within a

few years and am losing my nerve,” he told the

English press.

Richardson notes that Bullock took up

training on retirement from the saddle and was

based in France from 1929 to 1935 and later, in

1940, in India for the Governor of Bombay. It

was reported that he trained briefly at Caulfield

after retiring before returning to England and

setting up in Yorkshire in 1928.

Bullock died on August 26, 1946 at

Banstead, Surrey at the home of his son-in-law,

the jockey Walter Sibbrett who was one of the

least-heralded “Incomparables” having won

the 1935 Prix de l’Arc de Triomphe on Samos.

Thus he joined his father-in-law as a winner

of Europe’s greatest race, a distinction shared by

seven other Australians - Rae “Togo” Johnstone,

Scobie Breasley, Pat Glennon, Bill Pyers, Bill

Williamson and father and son George and

Gary Moore.

Notes:

1. The Incomparables - the Australian

jockeys who performed with great distinction

abroad (especially in England, Ireland and

France) throughout the 20th century.

2. All British and Irish jockeys were

considered for the RP list of the top 50 of the

20th century plus foreign jockeys, provided

they were based there for at least five years.

In our dealings with clients, the eligibility

and deductibility of home office

expenses is never far away.

What better time to revisit this topic

than now when many of us must work from

home to stay “Covid compliant” and therefore

many more business owners and employees

will be eligible to claim them from tax year

2020 and beyond.

This has always been a popular topic in

our practice as many horse businesses are

not just run from a rural property, but from a

dedicated area of a private home. For instance,

many commercial breeders do not own rural

properties. There are also many employees in

this industry, whose job is itinerant in nature,

who do not conduct their work activities from

an employer’s workplace.

This article will cover many working

scenarios where home office expenses are

allowable and will also share details of a new

shortcut method, offered by the ATO, that

makes it easier for employees to claim home

office expenses without the usual amount of

supporting records.

Home office expenses - overview

The deductibility of home office expenses

will depend on the nature of the person’s

activity. Cases will fall into two main types,

being:

1. Where the person uses his or her home

or part of it as a workplace, i.e. works from a

“place of business”; and

2. Where the person is merely bringing

work home from the office or other place of

employment.

The ATO distinguishes these two types

as having either the character of a “place of

business”; or of a private study. The former

refers to cases where an area is set aside

exclusively by a self-employed person for

income producing activities, e.g. a doctor’s

surgery. It also includes the situation where an

employer provides no other work location for

an employee. The latter refers to the situation

where an area of the home is simply used in

connection with income producing activities,

i.e. where working at home is a matter of

convenience.

What is a “place of business”?

ATO rulings outline the following factors

which may indicate that the area within the

home has the character of a “place of business”.

None of them alone, or in combination,

will conclusively determine that the area

constitutes a place of business, but they will be

considered along with other relevant factors.

The factors are:

• the area is clearly identifiable as a place

of business;

• the area is not readily suitable or

adaptable for use for private or domestic

purposes in association with the home

generally;

• the area is used exclusively or almost

exclusively for carrying on a business; or

• the area is used regularly for visits of

clients or customers.

Where there is “no alternative place of

business”

In the situation where it is necessary to work

from home because there is no alternative place

of business, the area will only be considered a

place of business if:

• it is a requirement inherent in the nature

of the person’s activities that the person

needs a place of business;

• the person’s circumstances are such that

there is no alternative place of business

and it was necessary to work from home;

and

• the area of the home is used exclusively or

almost exclusively for income producing

purposes.

This principle allows, for example, a

company to claim home office expenses

where its employee directors do not have an

alternative place of business, i.e. does not own

or lease an office.

Private “home study” used as a “matter of

convenience”

The more common case is that where

a private study of is used as a matter of

convenience.

Tax and a Covid home office

Working from home RACING POST/EDWARD WHITAKER

Page 12: STEVE MORAN€¦ · amazing horse, a horse of incredible presence when you saw him; a big, strong, scopey horse. It was amazing he was as athletic as he was for the size of him. “It’s

The ATO notes the following examples:

• a barrister who reads client briefs at

home;

• a teacher who prepares lessons or

marks assignments at home; and

• an insurance agent who maintains

client files and occasionally interviews

a client in his or her home office.

N.B. In April 2020, the ATO announced a

new method for claiming expenses for working

from home, via a home study, due to the

coronavirus pandemic. Using this “shortcut”;

method, you can claim a tax deduction of 80

cents for each hour worked from home between

March 1 2020 and June 30 2020.

Categories of “home office expenses”

I have noted above the circumstances

where home office expenses can be claimed,

the next question is what type of expenses can

be claimed in these scenarios.

Home office expenses fall into two

categories:

1. occupancy expenses; and

2. running expenses.

If a “place of business” – “occupancy” and

“running” can be claimed

If the office is a “place of business”; both

categories may be claimed; but if it is simply

a home study then only the running expenses

may be claimed. Occupancy expenses are those

which relate to ownership or use of the home

and, thus, are fixed in nature. These include

rent, mortgage interest, municipal and water

rates, house insurance premiums, and repairs.

Running expenses are those relating to use

of the facilities within the home, e.g. for a home

study. They include electricity for lighting, heating

and cooling, cleaning costs, depreciation of

professional library, equipment, furniture and

furnishings, and the cost of repairs of these latter

items. These expenses are only claimable to the

extent that they are additional expenses incurred

as a result of income producing activities. For

discussion on the apportionment of home office

expenses see below.

Examples of occupancy expenses denied for

a “home study”

The courts have, in a series of cases noted

below, examined the deductibility of the

expenses relating to the house itself, namely,

mortgage interests, rates, rent and insurance

and has held that these are not allowable

deductions for a “home study”. As noted above,

only running expenses can be claimed in the

home study scenario.

Case 1 – it was held that expenses incurred

in providing light and heating for the person

exclusively while engaged in work from

which he derives income would be deductible

but not if it was also provided for the members

of the person’s family.

Case 2 - the person and his wife purchased

a house in their family trust. The person, a

barrister, occupied one room as a study (not

a place of business). It was further agreed that

he could occupy the premises as a residence

provided he paid all outgoings. The person

claimed a deduction for the payment made

to the trust for the use of the home office. The

person’s claim was ultimately denied by the

courts. The court indicated that though the

outgoings satisfied general deductibility rules,

they should still be excluded as being of a

“domestic” nature.

Case 3 - the person, a barrister, was

similarly denied a claim for a proportion

of mortgage interest, rates and insurance

premiums referable to a home study.

Case 4 - where the person chooses to work

at home in a study rather than at his place of

business, this business use is not sufficient to

change the private or domestic nature of the

dwelling. This was the case where a farmer

conducted his farming business at a separate

place to his private residence. Accordingly,

time spent on farm business in his home study

did not allow for any deductions for rates or

mortgage interest.

Examples of occupancy expenses for a “place

of business”

Case 5 - Self-employed persons have been

allowed deductions for rent, interest and the like

on the basis that the home area was a “place of

business”. For example, a full-time script writer

wrote her scripts in a room in her flat. She was

allowed a deduction for part of the rent.

Case 6 - A deduction was allowed for

municipal rates and mortgage interest on a floor

area basis and for electricity and telephone on

a usage basis, to a person photogrammetrist.

The deduction was granted on the basis that the

person conducted his business solely from his

home.

Apportioning “place of business” occupancy

expenses

The ATO discusses methods of

apportionment of occupancy expenses.

In most cases home office expenses should

be apportioned on a floor area basis. Where

the home office is only used for part of the

year, expenses should be apportioned using

both a floor area and a time basis. In some

circumstances the ATO will accept a bona fide

estimate of the percentage of business use. One

such situation is for the use of depreciable items

such as professional library or equipment.

Another circumstance is when apportioning

heating/cooling and lighting expenses. A

person, e.g. a teacher, using a room for income

producing purposes at the same time as other

family members, cannot claim such expenses,

because they are not incurred exclusively for

the taxpayer’s benefit. If the taxpayer uses the

area at a different time to other members of the

family, then the power expenses relating to that

area, for that period, are claimable.

Beware Capital Gains Tax implications if

claiming a “place of business”

In conclusion, it is important to note that

there may be capital gains tax implications

where Home Office occupancy expenses

are claimed in relation to a person’s private

residence. Generally, capital gains tax does

not apply to a taxpayer’s private residence.

However, the capital gains provisions deem

that a capital gain (or loss) accrues to the extent

to which a private residence disposed of was

also used for the purpose of earning assessable

income during the period of ownership.

As a rule of thumb, it can be expected that

where occupancy expenses are claimed for an

area of a home which is a “place of business”,

the capital gains provisions will apply. In

some circumstances, claiming of Home Office

occupancy expenses will not be worthwhile if

the amount of any capital gain exceeds the tax

benefits from claiming such expenses.

VERDICT A field full of promising colts. It’s not easy to know which will takethe biggest step forward but there was plenty to like about the

way in which CLOUDBRIDGE drew clear on his Leicester debut and he’s preferredto Clive Cox’s Royal Scimitar, whose own debut success has been boosted a fewtimes since. Praise Of Shadows opened up with a clearcut win at Chester lastweek and also shouldn’t be underestimated. [Andrew Sheret]

VERDICT Subjectivist ran a belting race in the Gordon Stakes, sticking tohis task after setting out his stall in no uncertain terms from the

front, but he may well find that further improvement from MOGUL (nap) takes careof him again. Highland Chief was also bang there in that Goodwood race. Darainhas a higher profile than fellow twice-raced candidate Roberto Escobarr but thelatter might just turn out to be the better prospect for today’s graduation at 1m4f andhe could emerge as Mogul’s most serious challenge.[Richard Austen]
