UPM STEYRERMÜHL, ENVIRONMENTAL PERFORMANCE IN 2012

First established in 1868, the mill has developed into a determining factor for the industrialisation of the community of Laakirchen in Upper Austria. Two modern paper machines produce up to 500,000 tonnes per annum of high-quality printing papers.

Our three-stage biological treatment plant cleans both the mill’s effl uents and the municipal wastewater of the Laakirchen area. Combined heat and power plants make sure that primary energy is used effectively. Process residues are incinerated in the fl uidised bed boiler operated by Entsorgungs- und Energieverwertungsgesellschaft (EEVG), a subsidiary of UPM Steyrermühl and Laakirchen Papier AG (former SCA Laakirchen).

The sawmill is a 100% subsidiary of UPM Steyrermühl and produces up to 400,000 m3 of sawn timber. Sawmill residues are used as a raw material for paper-making. The Group’s wood sourcing function supplies both the paper mill and the sawmill with wood from sustainably managed forests.

The Laakirchen pollution control association has set up a state-of-the-art landfi ll site which is operated according to the requirements of the new landfi ll regulation.

UPM leads the integration of bio and forest industries into a new, sustainable and innovation-driven future. Our products are made of renewable raw materials and are recyclable. UPM consists of three Business Groups: Energy and pulp, Paper, and Engineered materials. The Group employs around 22,000 people. UPM is present in 67 countries and have production units in 17 countries. UPM’s annual sales exceed EUR 10 billion. UPM’s shares are listed on the Helsinki stock exchange. UPM Steyrermühl, Environmental Performance in 2012, is a supplement to the joint Environmental Statement of UPM’s pulp and paper mills (available at www.upm.com) and provides mill specifi c environmental performance data and trends for the year 2012. The annually updated supplement and the joint Environmental Statement together form the EMAS Statement. The next joint Environmental Statement and the next supplement for UPM Steyrermühl will be published in the spring of 2014.

Environmental performance in 2012

Environmental protection has a long tra-dition at Steyrermühl. When new produc-tion plants were built at the beginning of the 1980s, major investments were also made into environmental protection, espe-cially in effl uent treatment, energy sup-ply and waste management. As far back as in 1994, Steyrermühl implemented a quality management system, which over the years has been developed into an integrated management system for qual-ity, environment, fi re prevention and occu-pational health and safety. Our active mill fi re brigade forms the basis for effective risk and emergency management. Staffed by specially trained volunteers, it is able to provide effective response in case of an emergency together with the fi re and rescue services from the surrounding com-munities. The wood sourcing organisation gained Chain-of-Custody and PEFC certi-fi cation for sustainable forestry practices as far back as in 2001. Our products continuously meet the stringent require-ments of European eco-logos. Most of our products have been FSC-certifi ed since 2008.

Our environmental focus areas in 2012 can be summarised as follows (see page 6, Performance against targets):By successfully using ash as a soil sta-biliser in earth works, we were able to maintain a high recovery rate, which was again in excess of 100%. Most of the ash is commercialised under the brand

name “Cinerit”. Fibre pulp was produced largely without complexing agents. Our water management achieved signifi cant savings and we were able to reduce energy consumption and fi bre losses. We will further improve our performance through on-going evaluation of our processes and consistent action.Gaining product status for ash was pre-requisite for permanently securing a high recovery rate. Maintaining the currently

high level will be a big challenge for us, as there are currently no major pro-jects planned, such as, for example, the extensive fl ood protection projects. In order to further reduce fresh water con-sumption and effl uent generation, we will get actively involved in the group-wide “Material Effi ciency Programme”. The focus of our objectives for the com-ing years will continue to be on energy and water saving measures and reducing fi bre losses in all areas of production.

Airborne emissions

Production and raw materials Effl uents

Natural gas consumption was fairly con-stant, while there was a slight increase in external power supply. Specifi c CO2 emissions remained approximately con-stant from 2010 to 2011 and we achieved a reduction in NOX emissions thanks to higher production effi ciency.

Production was up by 14,400 t in com-parison with the previous year. Recovered paper consumption dropped slightly by 3,200 t (–1.2%). No complexing agents were used for pulp bleaching.

Thanks to water-saving measures, the total effl uent volume decreased by 14%, with the specifi c volume down by 3,1 m3/t. The annual COD load of effl u-ents discharged from the treatment plant remained constant at 2.68 kg/t.

TARGET TARGET ACHIEVED?

WasteMaintain ash recovery rate at 100%

The recovery rate especially of Cinerit in dam and road construction remained constant. The amount of material temporarily deposited in landfi ll increased. A 121.6% recovery rate was achieved for ash in 2012 (102.6% in 2011).

WaterReduce fresh water use in production to <14 m³/t

There was a small increase in fresh water use from 16.0 to 16.5 m3/t.

Occupational health and safety– Reduce number of work-related accidents. Target: “Zero accidents

in 2012”, maximum 8 accidents (per 1 million working hours)– Reduce health-related absences to <3.5%

– Result: 8.9 – the target was only narrowly missed.

– Result: 4.07% (4.39% in 2011) – the target was not achieved

AdditivesReduce fi bre losses (–2.5% per 1 tonne of recovered paper)

– Result: –2.5% per 1 tonne of recovered paper, target achieved

Energy– Reduce power consumption as follows:

TMP –9%, SC-TMP –10%, DIP –7%, PM3 –3.8%, PM4 –9%– Reduce steam consumption as follows:

TMP –69%, DIP –3%, PM3 –7%, PM4 –12%

– Result: TMP –4.5%, SC-TMP –5.6%, DIP –2.6%, PM3 –4.7%, PM4 –3.7%, reductions were achieved in all cases, and the target for PM3 was met.

– Result: TMP –23%, DIP –9.7%, PM3 –7.2%, PM4 +0.3%, reductions were achieved nearly everywhere and the target for PM3 and DIP was met.
