Introduction

• His real name is Gordon Matthew Sumner.• He was born 2 October 1951 in Wallsend

(England).

Why ‘Sting’?

• It was on performance with the Phoenix Jazzmen. Gordon Sumner was wearinga black and yellow sweater with hooped stripes. Bandleader, Gordon Solomon, noticed that he looks like a bumblebee and Sumner became ‘Sting’.

Before solo career…

• From an early age he wanted to be a musician. At start he played with local jazz band such as Phoenix Jazzmen, Newcastle Big Band, and Last Exit.

• In 1977 he moved to London and with Stewart Copeland and Henry Padovani form a new band – The Police.

• Between 1977 and 1983 they released5 albums. After last album, Synchronicity, members of group concentrated on solo careers.

Sting solo

• Sting has released 22 albums and a lot of singles. He has sold over 100 million records!

• He received sixteen Grammy Awards – first in 1980, last in 2003.

• He received Oscar nominations too. For songs ‘My Funny Friend And Me’, ‘Until’ and ‘You Will Be My Ain True Love’ (two first he only sang, the last is his own).

After performances…

• Sting isn’t only musician.

• He act in films and TV programs too. His film debut was in 1979 in Quadrophenia. His most famous role was in Dune (1984).

• Sting appeared on TV sitcom Ally McBeal as… himself

• Musician strongly supported humanitarian movements, such as Amnesty International.

• And last but not least he is a writer – he wrote his autobiography ‘Broken Music’.

Why I love Sting?

• Answer is very simply – he is the best musician I know

• He’s not a stupid singer, he is interested in help others (for example – he support Amnesty International).

• He is very gentlemanly man.• Despite of his age, he is still handsome • And he has very beautiful voice. I love

hearing his songs – Desert Rose is my favourite.
