Welcome!Welcome to our NEW LOOK Stitches & Craft Show!At the show this year you’ll see our stands look a little different with a chalkboard on each exhibitor’s stand where they can write up their show specials or new products, and a colour-coded flag which represents their product category – fabrics, papercraft, etc. Plus, this year there are plenty of new things to see and some new twists on traditional crafts.

Did you enjoy colouring-in as a child? The good news is that colouring-in for grown-ups is a huge trend internationally and, as well as being fun to do, it’s relaxing and stress-reducing. What’s this about? Think gorgeous detailed images printed in simple line drawings ready for you to colour with your art tool of choice – pencils, felt pens or watercolour paints. Instead of picking up a glass of wine at the end of the day, pick up a pencil! This trend is so big in France at present that colouring books are outselling cookbooks – come and check it out at the show. Discover quilling!Come to the show and see Christine Donehue – a renowned quilling expert with more than 70 awards to her credit.

The art of quilling is centuries old and was originally done by using the offcuts from books to make decorative designs. Today, Christine creates contemporary designs and you can see a super display of her amazing work, including hearts, flowers and other creations using this unique craft.

12.30pm: Quilled Greeting CardMake and take home a beautiful floral themed quilled greeting card. Suitable for beginners and those who have some quilling experience. Class cost: $15 including kit.

Grab some new ideas or even a new craft at these inspirational displays!SEE CRAFT BECOME FASHION! Come to the Handmade Fashion Parade – near the cafe – at 11am and 2.30pm each day and enjoy a runway show with handmade garments to inspire you. The outfits are all handmade using either patterns or original designs, so it’s a great way to see what’s possible. With ideas for tops, wraps, skirts and more, there’s something for everyone!

Mixed media on show!

See beautiful beading and textile art works by renowned artist Fiona Hammond. Fiona Hammond is a mixed-media artist whose love of beads, textiles and fibre has led to an eclectic array of wearable and non-wearable pieces over the last 15 years – everything from contemporary quilts to jewellery and sculptural forms. Take a class with Fiona at the show!

Plus, there’s also a Knitwear Parade at 12.30pm each day in this area with even more inspirational clothing and accessory ideas from Yarn Glorious Yarn and Prudence Mapstone.

TOP TIP Peaches can be replaced

with fresh figs,

nashi pear or mango.

MAKES 85 sheets filo pastry

4 peaches, seeded, sliced

350g ball fresh buffalo

mozzarella, torn

8 slices prosciutto, torn

¼ cup basil leaves

balsamic glaze, extra-virgin

olive oil, to serve

1 Preheat oven to hot, 200C.

Lightly grease an 8-cup Texas

muffin pan.

2 On a clean bench, layer filo sheets,

spraying each with oil. Cut into

eight equal squares.

3 Ease pastry squares into recesses

to line. Bake for 8-10 minutes until

golden and crisp. Allow to cool.

4 Fill each case with peach,

mozzarella and prosciutto. Season

to taste. Top with basil leaves. Drizzle

with balsamic glaze and oil to serve.

Tip: Serve filling on toasted

bruschetta bases if preferred.

Grilled prawns & calamari with

garlic butter

SERVES 8125g butter, softened

2 tblsp chopped parsley,

plus extra, to serve

2 cloves garlic, crushed

1 lemon, grated zest,

1 tblsp juice

750g medium green prawns,

peeled, deveined, tails intact

500g (4 medium) squid

tubes, cleaned, cut into

1cm slices

2 tblsp olive oil

lemon wedges, to serve

1 In a medium bowl, stir butter,

parsley, garlic and zest

together. Season to taste.

2 In a large bowl, combine

prawns, squid, oil and

lemon juice.

SERVES 81.5kg piece scotch fillet,

trimmed

2 tblsp olive oil

1 tblsp horseradish cream

½ bunch oregano

10 thin slices prosciutto

1 bunch spring onions,

trimmed, roasted

BÉARNAISE SAUCE

¼ cup white wine vinegar

1 bay leaf

½ tsp black peppercorns

1 eschalot, finely chopped

3 egg yolks

125g butter, melted, cooled

1 tsp chopped tarragon leaves

1 Preheat barbecue with lid to

hot, 200C. Weigh beef and

calculate cooking time (allow

15-20 minutes per 500g).

2 Rub oil over beef, sprinkle

with salt flakes and freshly

ground black pepper. Spread

with horseradish and top evenly

with oregano sprigs before

wrapping with prosciutto slices.

3 Place beef on a roasting rack

in an oven dish. Barbecue for

20 minutes. Turn and cook for

a further 25-30 minutes until

cooked to taste. Set aside,

covered, to rest.

4 BÉARNAISE SAUCE In a

small saucepan, combine

vinegar, bay leaf, peppercorns

and eschalot. Simmer for 3-5

minutes until liquid has reduced

by half (1½ tblsp). Strain and

reserve liquid. Place egg yolks

in a medium heatproof bowl

over a saucepan of very gently

simmering water. Do not allow

water to touch the base. Whisk

in reserved vinegar. Add butter

gradually in a thin stream,

whisking constantly until

thick. Remove from heat.

Stir in tarragon.

5Serve beef sliced with

roasted spring onions,

béarnaise sauce and steamed

baby vegetables, if liked.

Tip: If prosciutto is unavailable,

use thin rindless bacon.

Peach & mozzarella tarts

3 Preheat a barbecue plate on

high. Barbecue prawns and

calamari for 1-2 minutes, each

side, brushing with butter

mixture during cooking, until

just cooked through.

4 Serve with lemon wedges

and extra garlic butter.

Tip: Marinating calamari and

prawns in lemon juice will

cause it to start cooking so

do this at the last minute.

TOP TIP

If preferred, add

red wine to the pan

juices, and boil until

thickened. Serve as

a sauce over beef

instead of béarnaise.

An international textile art exhibition has landed in Australia and will be on display at the show. 50 small exhibition art quilts celebrate the SAQA group’s 25th anniversary and are one of eight trunk shows that are travelling the world until 2017.

Trunk Show G, which will tour Australia includes internationally renowned art quilters such as Dianne Firth (Australia), Hsin-Chen Lin (Taiwan), Alicia Merrett (England) and Cynthia St Charles (USA). The trunk show is a wonderful way to view and engage with quilts made using a wide variety of styles, techniques and fibres by many who are considered masters in their field.

SAQA is an international non-profit organisation dedicated to promoting the art quilt and the artists who create them. SAQA is also a resource on all things art quilt related for both its members and the general public. Founded in 1989 by an initial group of 50 artists, SAQA members now number more than 3,000 artists, teachers, collectors, gallery owners, museum curators and corporate sponsors across the globe. A dedicated core of volunteers and staff keep the organisation vibrant, dynamic, and progressive.

Each work measures 25.4cm x 17.8cm (10in x 7in) and is part of SAQA’s third trunk show.

TOP TIP Peaches can be replaced

with fresh figs,

nashi pear or mango.

MAKES 85 sheets filo pastry

4 peaches, seeded, sliced

350g ball fresh buffalo

mozzarella, torn

8 slices prosciutto, torn

¼ cup basil leaves

balsamic glaze, extra-virgin

olive oil, to serve

1 Preheat oven to hot, 200C.

Lightly grease an 8-cup Texas

muffin pan.

2 On a clean bench, layer filo sheets,

spraying each with oil. Cut into

eight equal squares.

3 Ease pastry squares into recesses

to line. Bake for 8-10 minutes until

golden and crisp. Allow to cool.

4 Fill each case with peach,

mozzarella and prosciutto. Season

to taste. Top with basil leaves. Drizzle

with balsamic glaze and oil to serve.

Tip: Serve filling on toasted

bruschetta bases if preferred.

Grilled prawns & calamari with

garlic butter

SERVES 8125g butter, softened

2 tblsp chopped parsley,

plus extra, to serve

2 cloves garlic, crushed

1 lemon, grated zest,

1 tblsp juice

750g medium green prawns,

peeled, deveined, tails intact

500g (4 medium) squid

tubes, cleaned, cut into

1cm slices

2 tblsp olive oil

lemon wedges, to serve

1 In a medium bowl, stir butter,

parsley, garlic and zest

together. Season to taste.

2 In a large bowl, combine

prawns, squid, oil and

lemon juice.

SERVES 81.5kg piece scotch fillet,

trimmed

2 tblsp olive oil

1 tblsp horseradish cream

½ bunch oregano

10 thin slices prosciutto

1 bunch spring onions,

trimmed, roasted

BÉARNAISE SAUCE

¼ cup white wine vinegar

1 bay leaf

½ tsp black peppercorns

1 eschalot, finely chopped

3 egg yolks

125g butter, melted, cooled

1 tsp chopped tarragon leaves

1 Preheat barbecue with lid to

hot, 200C. Weigh beef and

calculate cooking time (allow

15-20 minutes per 500g).

2 Rub oil over beef, sprinkle

with salt flakes and freshly

ground black pepper. Spread

with horseradish and top evenly

with oregano sprigs before

wrapping with prosciutto slices.

3 Place beef on a roasting rack

in an oven dish. Barbecue for

20 minutes. Turn and cook for

a further 25-30 minutes until

cooked to taste. Set aside,

covered, to rest.

4 BÉARNAISE SAUCE In a

small saucepan, combine

vinegar, bay leaf, peppercorns

and eschalot. Simmer for 3-5

minutes until liquid has reduced

by half (1½ tblsp). Strain and

reserve liquid. Place egg yolks

in a medium heatproof bowl

over a saucepan of very gently

simmering water. Do not allow

water to touch the base. Whisk

in reserved vinegar. Add butter

gradually in a thin stream,

whisking constantly until

thick. Remove from heat.

Stir in tarragon.

5Serve beef sliced with

roasted spring onions,

béarnaise sauce and steamed

baby vegetables, if liked.

Tip: If prosciutto is unavailable,

use thin rindless bacon.

Peach & mozzarella tarts

3 Preheat a barbecue plate on

high. Barbecue prawns and

calamari for 1-2 minutes, each

side, brushing with butter

mixture during cooking, until

just cooked through.

4 Serve with lemon wedges

and extra garlic butter.

Tip: Marinating calamari and

prawns in lemon juice will

cause it to start cooking so

do this at the last minute.

TOP TIP

If preferred, add

red wine to the pan

juices, and boil until

thickened. Serve as

a sauce over beef

instead of béarnaise.

Ali GeorgeAli George is a celebrated textile artist who loves to print, paint, draw, stitch, overprint and discharge her fabrics, using multiple techniques. Over time, her love of these different methods and media led to the creation of Aliquilts Hand Dyed Art Fabric with Rebecca Staunton Coffey. She is passionate about printmaking – and enjoys using found objects from her domestic space and travels to create fabrics that tell stories.

Ali will be at the show, near the SAQA art quilt display area, demonstrating textile art and mark making on cloth. And you can join a class with Ali at the show!

A stitch in timeSpend a creative hour in stitch with Ali and make a unique piece of art cloth.

Learn how to embellish a piece of art cloth using simple, elegant and quick hand stitching techniques. You can then use your completed ‘art cloth’, a one-of-a-kind fabric piece, in a quilt. Alternatively, you could incorporate it into any number of craft or home decor projects. Workshop kit includes Aliquilts’ handprinted art cloth, thread, needle and scissors and class notes in a compact carry case.

5000 poppies!Help us create a wall of poppiesLynn Berry and Margaret Knight are on a mission to create a field of more than 100,000 handcrafted poppies in Federation Square, Melbourne on Anzac Day 2015 for the Centenary Anzac Commemoration.

They set what they thought was ‘a challenging but achievable target’ of 5,000 poppies back in June 2013. Since then, they have increased this first to 25,000 and finally to 100,000, as this phenomenal project has taken off like wildfire.

The show will feature a wall which you are invited to cover with your handcrafted poppies.

Stitch up a lunch pouch Bite Size Papercraft Techniques

Make your own really cool bagCalling all young and young-at-heart creative souls who would love to make their very own stylish, insulated fabric lunch pouch – it keeps food cool and is easy to clean!

In this fun, one-hour class with Mandy Murray you will use a Husqvarna Viking sewing machine and the AccuQuilt GO! Fabric Cutters!

Make it macramé!See different types of weaving in action with the Queensland Spinners, Weavers and Fibre Artists at the show. 1.30pm: Getting the most out of your die cutting machine You will learn several tips and tricks to die cutting and embossing. Explore easy ways of colouring embossed images, aligning dies, letter-pressing and many other tips that will have you loving your die cutting machine even more.

2.30pm: Using Alcohol Markers, Watercolour Markers and Pencils to colour your stamped images. Learn how to use the different mediums for different effects. Also see which stamping inks and papers to use for different techniques.

3.30pm: Heat Embossing and Alcohol InksTips on how to emboss with embossing powders, glitters and a heat gun. You’ll also learn the wonderful things you can do with alcohol inks.
