Welcome to St Mary’s Bryanston Square CE Primary and Nursery School Dear Applicant,

Thank you for your interest in the role of Head Teacher at St Mary’s Bryanston Square.

We are a one-form entry Church of England primary school located in a central London area rich with diversity. We are proud of our school community, which is representative of this. We take full advantage of our location, making sure our pupils’ learning is enriched by the many exciting opportunities we are able to access.

Our school mission is ‘Excellence With Compassion’.

St Mary’s is a happy and supportive learning environment with excellent teaching at the heart of everything we do. Every child is valued and their individual academic, social and emotional needs are recognised and nurtured. Our most recent Ofsted inspection found that “The school’s work to promote pupil’s personal development and welfare is outstanding. Pupils are immensely proud of their school and enjoy participating in the multitude of formal, enrichment and extra-curricular activities available to them”.

We have high academic standards and are proud of the progress our pupils make during their journey through our school. Our foundation is our strong and distinctly Christian ethos which embraces inclusivity and fosters respect for each other and our different faiths and backgrounds. This ethos is strengthened through our close relationship with our local church, St Mary’s Bryanston Square. Our six core values, chosen by the pupils, parents, staff and Governors of our school are rooted in our Christian faith: Love, Honesty, Forgiveness, Respect, Curiosity and Feeling Safe. A recent SIAMS healthcheck recognised our success in embedding our values: “The impact of this teaching has contributed to the pupils’ development of their own self-worth and the worth of others. Consequently, pupils recognise the importance of showing compassion, ‘showing love to one another’. Our most recent Ofsted inspection in 2016 rated us as a Good school, and since then we as Governors have continued to work with the school leadership and staff to build on our many strengths and to develop in the areas where we needed to improve. We have a very clear sense of direction, a shared focus on our priorities and confidence in being able to achieve our aims. Please watch our school video to find out more about what makes St Mary’s so special:

I look forward to receiving your application. I urge you to visit us to see us in action and look forward to meeting you.

Vision and Values St Mary’s Bryanston Square Church of England primary school is an inclusive and welcoming school for pupils of all faiths, religions, cultures and backgrounds.

Our Christian ethos is reflected in the respect and love we have for each other.

‘Excellence with compassion’ To provide an excellent learning environment, which promotes achievement in every area, and nurtures the social, emotional and spiritual well-being of the whole school community.

As a Church school, we believe every child is made in the image of God, and therefore we want the very best for them. That means achieving the highest possible academic standards, but also means that we value the whole child – mind, body and spirit – and seek to create a culture of love, respect, wellbeing and safety for everyone in our community. Our vision is based upon Jesus’ commandment in Mark 12:31:

“Love your neighbour as yourself”

As a result, we aim to value ourselves as special and unique, value each other and treat each other with kindness, respect and grace, and value families and communities as the places where love can flourish. At St Mary’s we welcome everyone to be part of our school community; as well as a number of Christian families, many of our children are Muslim or from other faith backgrounds. This is a real strength of our school, and part of what makes our school community such a wonderful place. We have 6 core values, rooted in our Christian faith, which have been chosen by the pupils, parents, staff and Governors of our school. Each value is connected to a verse from the Bible, showing the theological basis underpinning them.

Our school rules Our school rules also relate to our values: • We respect and value each other, treating others as we would like to be treated • We take care of our school community • We come to school ready to learn and to help each other learn

School context • Judged BY OFSTED AS ‘Good’ with ‘Outstanding’ PD, Welfare & Behaviour in 2016

• The school roll is representative of the local area:

• 89% of pupils are local to the school • 11% live out of borough (double last year)

• Mix of the poorest and most affluent families represented

• 28% Pupil Premium – above national average, but lower than local average.

• Around 50% of our pupils now come from the lowest deprivation bands, compared with 33% prior to 2016, showing a large increase in deprivation in the last 2 years.

• Above average % of statements/ EHCPs, other SEND broadly average

• Above average mobility, impacting on outcomes across the school and pupil numbers. A high proportion of families leave London when their children reach the end of EYFS (often the higher attaining pupils)

• 59% identified as EAL (above national average, but in line with London), with 81% coming from Ethnic minority backgrounds. The most commonly spoken language other than English is Arabic

• SIAMS 2014 ‘Good’ overall, with Satisfactory RE (although improvements noted). Subsequent external visits show that the school has improved significantly in all areas since last inspection, particularly in RE

• Close links with the parish church for collective worship, clubs and pastoral support. St Mary’s is a large charismatic Church with a young, diverse congregation. There is a linked family centre and close links to a mission project in Uganda, which school staff have visited for the last two years

• We offer an extended day (breakfast and after school clubs)

• Our EYFS includes Nursery, currently with places for 30 FT pupils

• The school roll is now rising despite a surplus of places locally and a three year decline in numbers (due to our growing popularity)

• The quality of teaching, learning and assessment is now consistently ‘Good’ overall

with some ‘Outstanding’ teaching

• Governors are ‘effective’ and represent the Church, LA, Deanery and Diocese as well as staff and parents

• Parents are supportive of the school. Some run a small ‘Friends’ group which organises popular fundraising events e.g. the Christmas Fair and International Day

6
