Welcome to Stoke-on-TrentStoke-on-Trent, in Staffordshire, is a unique Great British City made up of six separate towns: Tunstall, Burslem, Hanley (the City Centre), Stoke, Fenton and Longton – affectionately known as ‘The Potteries’.

Home to the world’s greatest pottery manufacturers and recently confirmed as the ‘World Capital of Ceramics’, the City boasts visitor centres, ceramic museums and factory shops plus excellent leisure and entertainment facilities, so come along and enjoy!

Conveniently set in the Heart of England, the City is ideally placed for a day out or short break. Less than an hour from Birmingham or Manchester and less than two hours from London Euston by train, it’s easy to ‘Make it Stoke-on-Trent’!

How to use this guideThis guide is divided into themes: The Potteries; Shopping and Markets; Leisure and Entertainment; Gardens and Historic Houses; Accommodation and Meal Stops. Within The Potteries you’ll find information on visitor centres, factory tours, museums and factory shops. To help plan your visit to The Potteries, we’ve grouped the pottery attractions into clusters - the City Centre; the North of the City; and the South of the City. Please use this guide in conjunction with coach maps which are in the inside back cover of this guide.

For smaller groupsThroughout this guide this symbol * has been used to indicate smaller factory shops and attractions that may be too small to cope with large numbers, please check first.

Factory HolidaysFactory Tours are not available during factory holidays. The dates here are inclusive and show factory holidays for 2010. Stoke-on-Trent has launched a series of innovative behind-the-scenes tours, which give group visitors to The Potteries an entirely different perspective of the City.

Focusing on some of the world-class fine china attractions and fantastic gardens the tours have been carefully put together with the keen gardener and those interested in history and heritage in mind.

Here is just a small selection of ideas to provide a taste of what we can do. However if you would like something a little different for your group then get in touch and we can help to put a special tailor made itinerary together. More tours are available on the website just click on www.visitstoke.co.uk/groups

City Centenary 2010One of the few Cities in Britain to have been formed as a “Federation”, Stoke-on-Trent is to celebrate a major 100th anniversary in 2010. Known affectionately world-wide as The Potteries, The City is equally famous for being comprised of six towns: Tunstall, Burslem, Longton, Hanley, Stoke and Fenton as a “Federated County Borough” and after 15 years of being a single-managed authority, King George V made it all official by conferring upon them the official status of a “City of the Realm”.

The city’s centenary will be celebrated in style throughout 2010 with a series of exhibitions, talks, a study day and events which will include the unique Staffordshire Hoard and Emma Bridgewater exhibition both at the Potteries Museum & Art Gallery.

Local author Arnold Bennett, was writing his novels about The Potteries at the time of the Federation, and 2010 happens to mark the centenary of one of his best known books: Clayhanger.

Another local company with a birthday this year is Portmeirion who celebrate their 50th anniversary this year. To celebrate this special milestone Portmeirion will be introducing a series of unique products featuring some of its best loved designs each made in Stoke-on-Trent, the home of Portmeirion since 1960.

For further information and to keep up to date with all the different events happening throughout the year just click on the What’s On section of www.visitstoke.co.uk

Trentham & Wedgwood

Visit the £100 million redevelopment of the Trentham Estate with its Italian Gardens, lakeside walks, shopping village, garden centre and quality restaurants.

Combine with a visit to the internationally acclaimed Wedgwood Visitor Centre and a visit to the new Wedgwood Museum, which won the national Art Fund Prize for museums and galleries in its first year of opening. The Museum houses the majority of the Wedgwood ceramic archive and art collection and has, for the first time in history, brought the entire collection together under the same roof in an eye catching, interactive and creative way.

Shopaholics delight

A shopaholics delight. Plenty of opportunities to shop for your bargains at various factory shops including Wedgwood & Royal Doulton, Moorcroft, Portmeirion, Churchill China, Royal Stafford, Dudson, Emma Bridgewater, and Aynsley. From luxury lifestyle goods to mugs, full dinner services to gifts. There is something for everyone! All at reduced prices.

Peak & Potteries

Stoke-on-Trent is surrounded by beautiful countryside. To the north is the dramatic scenery of the Staffordshire Moorlands and Peak District National Park, offering scenic drives, picturesque towns and villages and a wide range of outdoor activites.

Culture & Heritage

A day of pottery heritage. Travel back in time and discover the history of the Potteries at The Potteries Museum & Art Gallery which houses the world’s greatest collection of Staffordshire ceramics, the national collection of Minton ceramics and a Mark XVI Spitfire designed by local hero Reginald Mitchell. Visit Gladstone Pottery Museum, an authentic Victorian pottery factory with its cobbled courtyard, bottle ovens, Doctor’s house and Flushed with Pride, telling the history of the toilet! In complete contrast, visit the modern site of the Wedgwood factory with its own 250 years of history. A chance to visit the demonstration area and then a visit around the fantastic Wedgwood Museum with over 7000 artefacts on display.

Christmas & New Year

Stoke-on-Trent offers a great day out for Christmas shopping and the City’s many pottery factory shops are full of fantastic bargains which make ideal gifts. The visitor centres and museums organise a range of festive events and activities and stock a range of gifts ‘with a difference’, including ceramic and specialist books.
