Name Tag Challenge

Block of the Month Program

We have a lot of new people and it is difficult to learn everyone’s names. So, we decided to help out and offer a raffle ticket if you wear your name tag. Each month that you wear your tag, you will receive a raffle ticket to win a prize.

This is so helpful to get to know everyone! See the end of the newsletter for the name tag pattern.

Cyndi Cooke

Each month, we will select a block pattern; directions and a photo of the block are included at the end of the newslet-ter and will also made available at the monthly meeting. The Chair constructs the pattern to check the accuracy of the block and makes recommendations with respect to color choice. Members turn in their completed blocks at the next meeting and a drawing is held with the lucky ticket holder winning the blocks. We will attempt to use differing techniques including, patchwork, applique, paper and string piecing. Consider mak-ing two blocks each month, one to donate and one using your own color scheme that you can combine into a sampler quilt at the end of the year. I hope you will choose to become involved in this year's BOM program. It is a wonderful opportunity to learn a new technique and sharpen your piecing skills. The block directions and photos for turn in at the November and December guild meetings can be found at the end of the newsletter. All blocks should follow the colors in the pattern. If you have any questions, please email me. Brenda Baughman

Community Service

Here is information for donating to our charities:

• Prince William Hospital NICU (between 34" x 34" and 39" x 39") - The quilts are to be colorful and cheer-ful. Unfortunately, for safety, the lights stay on in the NICU department so they will be used to cover the baby incu-bators to keep the lights off of the sleepy baby eyes. The staff will wash them and re-use them.

• Bull Run Warrior Retreat Center (any size quilt and pillowcases) - The Warrior Retreat at Bull Run is the flagship program of Serve Our Willing Warriors. The Retreat is a place where “Willing Warriors” can get away from the hospital environment with family, caretakers, and friends to relax, enjoy quality time, and reconnect in a com-fortable home-like environment. The Retreat is seeking patriotic and non-patriotic quilts. They will be giving a patri-otic quilt to the warriors staying at the Retreat to take home. The non-patriotic quilts will be used to create a “homey” atmosphere and stay at the Retreat. The Retreat is also looking for pillowcases. They are looking for something to give each child that spends time at the retreat center with their family. At this time we have lots of pillowcases and will be working with Haymarket QU to maintain the pillowcase stash. Good size lap quilts are always welcome.

• CASA (Court Appointed Special Advocates) (Any size quilt) – These quilts are made from colorful fabrics and are presented to children for comfort allowing them to have something to call their own. The remainder are dis-tributed to children who have been adopted within the last year at the November National Adoption Day Ceremony at the Prince William Court House in Manassas, Virginia.

• Manassas and Gainesville Health and Rehabilitation Centers (Quilt sizes: 36” x 39”) – Provides com-prehensive rehabilitation, long-term and respite care services, including physical, occupational and speech therapy, audiology, cardiac and pulmonary rehabilitation. Laps quilts are provided to patients for use due to their rehabilita-tion stays or used as prizes for Bingo, etc.

• Comfort Cases (50" x 60" max size) - At Comfort Cases they believe that every child deserves to feel a sense of dignity. Every child deserves to pack their belong-ings in a special bag that they can call their own. It is their mission as a charity to provide a proper bag, filled with comfort and essential items, to these brave youth in foster care on their journey to find their forever home. The quilts should be colorful and will range from baby-toddler to child to teenage ages.

Meeting on Monday, December 9

Christmas party!

Floral Tapestry workshop with Kevin Womack on Tuesday, January 14

Kevin Womack is coming back to teach another Floral Tapestry workshop. If you missed his workshop back in May, this is your chance!

Learn to create a small wall hanging of a large, lush bouquet of flowers and leaves ar-ranged in a vase. By pre-cutting flowers and leaves before class, most of the hard work is done. The applique and quilting will be completed in one step, allowing you to leave class with a mostly-finished piece ready to bind.

This is a fun class with no “rights” or “wrongs” or precision sewing. The possibilities are endless and your bouquet will reflect your own unique style. We will relax, be creative and have fun—a perfect low stress class!

Free-motion stitching experience very helpful. Knowledge of how to set-up your ma-chine for free-motion stitching is essential.

The workshop will be held at Bethel Lutheran Church from 9am to 4pm. The workshop fee is $40. Please bring a sack lunch and 2 non-perishable food items for the food bank.

November’s Guild Meeting Program

Julie Belin of Blue Oaks Quilting will return to teach us how to “Tucker-ize” our quilt patterns. We will learn how to look at quilt patterns and identify the Deb Tucker rulers that can be used to make the quilts.

Upcoming Programs and Workshops

I would like to thank everyone for all their leftover fabric pieces, fabric you didn't want, batting, sheets towels, pil-lowcases and pillows. With all that I have received: I have been able to give the Prince William Humane Society over 200 flat cat beds/mats, several pillow dog beds (made from pillows given), several covers for cages, blankets, towels to clean dogs or cats with and have more cat beds to be making. I am still collecting fabric or batting you don't want, sheets, towels, pillowcases & old pillows.

Thank you to everyone that helps make this happen.

Mid-Atlantic Quilt Show Challenge - Four Play. Sign up Time with an

Incentive!

It's time to sign up for the Mid-Atlantic Quilt Show 2020 Challenge! Let's make a showing this year! Liz Sampson will be taking sign ups at our November meeting. If you cannot make the meeting, please send Liz an email telling her that you are signing up for the challenge. As an incentive, the folks who sign up and actually enter into the chal-lenge will be entered into a drawing for a quilty prize donated by Liz Sampson! As a reminder, here is the infor-mation about the challenge.

Challenges are fun to do, but they always give you a specific theme to focus your work. This time it will be different. Instead of being given a theme, the subject of the challenge is up to you – and it can be whatever you like. The chal-lenge part is that you must do four 12” by 12” quilts – each one illustrating your theme. You could do your 4 favorite blocks or four favorite colors. You can do your interpretation of the four seasons, four elements or four suits in a deck of cards. You can do four totally different quilts visually, as long as they are related in some way. So… don’t 4-go the fun, put your creativity at the 4-front and go 4-ward with your Four Play theme. These will be hung on a strip of fabric that is 6" (finished size) by 50" strip of fabric. The squares are pinned (safety pins) or stitched on with the quilts 1" apart. Think - one long row. There should be a 6" loop at the top for hanging. More specific directions on hanging to follow. Names needed for November meeting, sign-ups to database due in January, and quilts for deliv-ery due in February. Exact dates for January and February to follow.

Reduce Your UFO’s Challenge

If you attended the October Guild Meeting, you were fortunate to see a number of great Show and Tells. A number of these were finished UFOs. So far we have ten participants who have completed 40 UFOs. However, we need to keep on working as we are halfway through our challenge and still have a large number of unfin-ished projects to go

Virginia Quilt Museum Update

Exhibit II (July 23rd—December 14th) From the Hills and Hollers of West Virginia: An Exhibit by Members of West Virginia Quilters, Inc. Curator: Barbara Green Quilting is an art form that is as old as the hills, and West Virginia Quilters, Inc. is proud to present some shining examples from the hills and hollers of West Virginia. West Virginia Quilters, Inc. is the statewide quilting guild from West Virginia that grew out of the statewide quilt documentation project 25 years ago. Our art, both traditional and contemporary, has flourished throughout the years and we are excited to present our juried exhibit. INSPIRED by ELVIS Donna DeSoto, curator Elvis Lives! In fact, there have been a number of Elvis sightings at the Virginia Quilt Museum! On the heels of Inspired by the Beatles and Inspired by the National Parks comes Inspired by Elvis. Fiber artists from Singapore to Australia to Slovakia to Canada to California all were motivated by one common force: a love and appreciation of Elvis Presley. The 96 (36” x 36”) quilts in this collection represent a wide range of techniques, inter-pretations and abilities. Master artist work is displayed along side quilts by first-timers. Subjects depict quilts of Elvis in his early life and of Elvis the entertainer. More than 60 of them depict a famous Elv-is song, from whimsical to abstract portrayals. Try to guess the names of the songs as you look at the list of those in-cluded.
