DEATH OF MR. EDWARD GRIFFITH.The many friends of Mr. EdwardGriffith will be sorry to hear of hisdeath, which took place on Sunday lastat his residence, Redbank Plains. Thedeceased gentleman had been in failinghealth for some months, but it wasonly a week previous to his death thathe was confined to his bed. He wasseventy-nine years of age and leaves awife, eleven sons, six daughters, andthirty-six grandchildren to mourntheir loss. This (writes ourcorrespondent) is not a bad record, and it must have been a source ofcomfort to the departed one to knowthat all his children were exceedinglywell conducted and models of everygood quality that a father coulddesire. All his sons received anexcellent training on their father'sfarm. They have benefited by the goodexample set them, as everyone of themis engaged in agricultural pursuits, and doing well. Mr. Griffith arrivedin Queensland early in 1852 in theship Parsee, having for a shipmatethat veteran Mr. John Byrne, ofGoodna, (grandfather of Mr. J. J.Byrne, of the Immigration Depot, NorthIpswich), who, if he lives till the10th of next month will be 100 yearsof age, having been born in thatmemorable year 1798. Mr. Griffith wasborn in North Wales in 1818, and a

better specimen of a British farmercould scarcely be found. He spent hisearly years on his father's farm, andhe must have made good use of histime, for he understood his businessthoroughly. He gained his colonialexperience first on Dr. Dorsey'sstation, and afterwards with Mr. R. J.Smith at the Town Marie boiling-downworks. He arrived on Redhank Plains in1856. His first purchase was onlytwenty-five acres, but, by carefulindustry, frugality, and goodmanagement, he soon increased hisholding to 468 acres, and acquired2000 acres in other parts of WestMoreton for his sons. He gave hisattention chiefly to maize growing, and, like most farmers on the Plains, grew cotton and sugar-canesuccessfully, besides carrying ondairying and cattle breeding. Mr.Griftith was a quiet, retiring, andunassuming man, and was respected andesteemed by all who knew him. Hisfuneral, which took place on Mondaylast at the Ipswich cemetery, was verylargely attended notwithstanding theshort notice. Nearly all the membersof his family were present, as well asresidents of the surroundingdistricts. Thus was laid to rest anindulgent father, a good husband, anexcellent colonist, and an agreeableand sympathetic neighbour, ever readyto oblige and assist his fellow man.

George Washington Griffiths (1844-1924), foundry proprietor, was born on24 March 1844 at Bristol, England, sonof Thomas Griffiths, accountant andCongregational minister, and his wifeElizabeth, nee Hawkins. The familymoved to London in 1846 and toManchester in 1848 where Thomas becamea junior partner in A. & S. Henry, cotton merchants; he became wealthyfrom contraband cotton during theAmerican Civil War. George waseducated at Dr Clark's BoardingSchool, Brill, Buckinghamshire, andbriefly at Manchester Mechanics' HighSchool. Hoping to become an architect,he left school in December 1857 andworked briefly in building, engineering and haberdashery beforejoining A. & S. Henry. On 31 July 1867George was married by his father toIsabella Park Atherton. With his wife, children and brother-in-law WilliamAtherton, he sailed for Queensland on2 October 1870.

Griffiths and Atherton bought a smallironmongery and mechanical repair shopat Toowoomba late in 1871; Athertonsoon left and, after the arrival of abrother, John Alfred Griffiths, andtwo sisters, the firm became GriffithsBros & Co. early in 1873. Moving to alarger site in 1874, they built afoundry and made their first castingin February 1876. They survived bymaking some of Australia's earliestmetal windmills until their firstcontract for railway rolling-stock in1881. In 1884 Griffiths bought out hisfamily partners and formed theToowoomba Foundry and Rolling StockManufacturing Co. Ltd with himself asquarter stockholder and managingdirector. To make steel sleepers forthe Normanton-Croydon Railway, a plantwas opened in Brisbane. When therailway contracts expired in 1892, thefirm was saved by an accommodationwith the Queensland National Bank andby the purchase in Griffiths's wife'sname of some £5000 worth of sharesheld outside the family. Saved againby railway contracts in 1895-1902, thefirm then began to produce the famous'Southern Cross' windmill. Itcontracted in 1910 and 1914 to buildthirty-five locomotives for Queensland

but, after a loss on a Commonwealthcontract, it abandoned railway work. After a trip to England in 1903-04Griffiths began transferring controlto his two youngest sons. He retiredin 1911.

Griffiths himself was not an engineerand did not employ designers andengineers, preferring to rely onimported designs or the patternsprovided with the precarious railwaycontracts. When necessary, he hiredhis brother John Alfred. A goodestimator and manipulator of money,Griffiths removed competition byruthless price-cutting. Essentially hewas a salesman rather than a managerand often relied on injections ofcapital by his wealthy father indifficult times. Generous in largematters but parsimonious in small, heloved reading novels and history anddevoted much leisure to a largegarden. An active Freemason, he turnedfrom the Congregational to theAnglican Church. He served briefly onthe Toowoomba Municipal Council.

Following his wife's death in 1910,Griffiths married Margaret Ann Hunt on7 March 1911 at Mosman, Sydney. Hedied on 27 August 1924 at Rose Bay,Sydney, survived by his wife and fourdaughters and three sons of his firstmarriage.

His third son Alfred AthertonGriffiths (1879-1948) was born on 5March 1879 at Toowoomba. Educated atToowoomba Grammar School, he joinedthe foundry in January 1895 as astoreman but soon unofficially assumedmany of his father's managerialduties. He became a director in 1900,de facto managing director in 1908 andjoint managing director in 1911 withhis brother George Herbert Griffiths(1881-1977), born on 17 April 1881 atToowoomba. Educated at J. A.Baxendall's Downs School, Toowoomba,Bert joined the firm in 1898. Moretechnically minded than his brother,he started on the works floor, iscredited with developing the 'SouthernCross' windmill, became a director in

1904 with the unofficial title ofworks manager and joint managingdirector in 1911. From the mid-1920sboth brothers delegated their routineduties to other directors but retainedoverall control. Atherton became thefirst president of the Southern Crossgroup of companies and was succeededby Bert.

Under their direction branches wereestablished all over Australia. Theytook over the Eclipse Windmill Co. in1925, created an export division in1939 and established a subsidiary inSouth Africa. They also diversifiedinto south-west Queensland pastoralproperties. During World War II theToowoomba foundry employed over 1000men on shell-primers, engines andother equipment for the Australian andallied forces. In peace, the firmconcentrated on water-supply systemsand, more recently, automotivecastings. Industrial Investments PtyLtd was formed in 1949 (renamedIndustrial Enterprises in 1952) to co-ordinate all Australian operations.

The two brothers had an amicable, complementary but distantrelationship. Atherton, like hisfather, was the manager and salesmanwith a head for figures and minutedetail. Like his uncle, Bert wasinventive, even visionary, and usuallyinitiated major developments. From1904 the two gradually bought sharesheld outside the immediate family andensured that the company remained afamily business.

Much more outgoing than Bert, Athertonwas an alderman of Toowoombaintermittently in the 1920s andconsistently in 1930-48. A footballenthusiast, he was one of the oldestpractising Rugby referees in the worldwhen he retired in 1943. He marriedEvelyn Hamilton at Toowoomba on 20June 1907; they had five children.Divorced on 12 September 1934, hemarried Marjorie Jessie Nankervis in1937. He died of cancer at Toowoombaon 25 June 1948 and was cremated.Bert, who served in France as a sapper

in 1918, was a crack rifle shot. Hehad an alert, retentive mind, and inretirement made extensive notes on thefirm's history. He married AgnesMcIntyre at Sandgate on 10 October1917; they had three children. Threemore children resulted from hismarriage to Margaret Walton Kent atInverell, New South Wales, on 4November 1933. He died at Toowoomba on8 July 1977 and was cremated.Select Bibliography

(instructed by Messrs. Flower andHart) appeared for the plaintiff, whoobtained a decree nisi returnable inthree months. Alfred AthertonGriffiths said he was married to thedefendant at Toowoomba, on June 20,1907, and they had lived there eversince, excepting visits to other partsof the world. His wife had a marriagesettlement, and had substantialproperty of her own. From the date ofthe marriage she always had the rightto draw on his account for whatevershe wanted to meet household and herpersonal expenses. He made trips toEngland with his wife twice. Fivechildren were issue of the marriage.LESSENING AFFECTION. 'But,' Griffithssaid, 'there was evidence of alessening of her affection prior to1928. Mr. Graham: Do you know thedefendant, Foster? - Yes. We haveknown him ever since we were youngpeople. I have known Foster about 40years. He played the pianoaccompaniments for my wife; she playsthe violin and also sings. She wasmusical; I was not. Did you have anysuspicion of any infidelity on yourwife's part?— Not the slightest; Icould not believe it. He went on tosay that in 1933 he consulted hissolicitors, and gave certaininstructions. He had a motor car, buthis wife drove it. He eventually leftthe house. In answer to a question byhis Honour, he remarked, 'My wife washabitually unpleasant.' UNDER AWINDOW. John Michael Donovan, aprivate inquiry agent, gave evidenceof having gone to Toowoomba, underinstructions, to observe Mrs.Griffiths and Foster. About 1 p.m. onJanuary 13 he followed Foster, who wasgoing in the direction of PicnicPoint. Later that night Foster andMrs. Griffiths drove to her home inher car. The witness met Mr. L. A. G.Boyce, and both of them noticed thehouse was in total darkness. Thewitness got underneath a bedroomwindow, and heard the voices of a manand a woman. Later he saw Mrs.Griffiths and Foster drive from thehouse in a car. On January 20, at 6.30p.m., the witness again saw Mrs.Griffiths and Foster at the house, heard a piano playing and a womansinging. He got underneath the bedroom

window again and heard voices.Subsequently he saw a motor car in thedrive, and flashed his torch on thetwo people in it. G. H. Griffiths, whowas with the witness, said that they, were Foster and Mrs. A. A. Griffiths. In an ensuing conversation, Fostersaid that he would admit nothing.ALLEGED ADMISSION George HerbertGriffiths, company director, andbrother of the plaintiff, gavecorroborative evidence. Inconversation with Mrs. A. A. Griffithson the night of January 20 last, hesaid, that she said to him, 'There aretwo sides to every question. I am notaltogether to blame.' He identified adocument, which was said to have beensigned by Mrs. A. A. Griffiths in thepresence of a witness. According tothat document the following statementwas attributed to the defendant: - 'Iadmit being in my bedroom with H.Foster, of Toowoomba on Saturdaynight, January 13, 1934, for a periodof about two hours and 10 minutes, andon Saturday night, January 20, 1934,for over one hour, no other personbeing present in the room or in thehouse.' L. A. G. Boyce, companydirector, and nephew of the plaintiff, further corroborated the evidence ofthe private inquiry agent, and addedsome further details of happenings onthe night of January 20. When he sawthe motor car coming down from thegarage of Mrs. Gnffiths's house to thefront gate, he pushed the gate halfshut. Then he jumped over a fence, andwent up to the car as it stopped.MAN ON FLOOR OF CAR. The witnessdeclared that Mrs. Griffiths theninquired: 'Is that you Leslie?' Hesaid, 'Yes. Is there any one in thecar with you?' She answered, 'No.' Hethen opened the door of the car awayfrom the driver's seat there was noone in the front seat. He leaned overthe back seat - it was a limousine andthere a man was sitting on the floorof the car. 'Just as I touched him,'the witness explained, the man said:'Yes, there is. What is it Boyce? Youknow I am an old friend of Mrs.Griffiths; we have just been havingsome music, and now she is seeing mehome?' His Honour found that thedefendant and the co-defendant hadcommitted misconduct on the dates
