SAFETY AND SECURITY ON (and OFF) THE INTERNET

Any time that you are putting in important information, like banking or credit card info.,

always make sure of two things:

1. In the Address Bar (URL) there should be an HTTPS://

The S means that the site is Secure

2. Also, you should note that in the bottom right hand corner a lock will appear in the browser window. This little icon reinforces the fact the site is secure

SAFETY AND SECURITY ON THE INTERNET

Getting rid of  Cookies is a primary concern; especially if you areusing a shared computer.

First of all, what is a COOKIE?

“HTTP cookies, sometimes known as web cookies or just cookies, are parcels

of text sent by a server to a web browser and then sent back unchanged by thebrowser each time it accesses that server. HTTP cookies are used for authenticating, tracking, and maintaining specific information about users, suchas site preferences or the contents of their electronic shopping carts.”

“ Cookies are in fact only data, not program code: they cannot erase or readinformation from the user's computer…This information can be collected in a

 profile of the user.”

Wikipedia

To get rid of these:(Firefox) Tools Clear Private Data

Clear PrivateData: Cookies,

Cache, etc.

(Internet Explorer) Tools Internet Options

What is a Cache?

“A cache is a temporary storage area where frequently accessed data can be storedfor rapid access.” Wikipedia

This is also known as Temporary Internet Files.

Why do we care to get rid of it?

1. It takes up space on your hard-drive2. You may have personal files that have temporarily been opened (pictures, etc.) that you

may not want others to view

And finally, the “INDEX.DAT” file

Another reason not to use Internet Explorer.

“In the Microsoft Windows operating system, index.dat is a file used by the InternetExplorer web browser. The index.dat file functions as an active database, which runsas long as Windows is active. It functions as a repository of redundant information, such as web URLs, search queries, and recently opened files.”

The Controversy:

“Internet privacy groups contend that the use of index.dat files in the Windowsoperating system is an invasion of privacy. One of their main complaints is thatthe index.dat files cannot be deleted or erased easily, because they are alwaysopen when Windows is running.

Also, when this file grows larger than 80MB in size, degraded web performancewill occur.

Another contention is that the operating system gives a false sense of security.Even after the user has cleared the internet cache folder, temporary internet filesfolder, and history folder, the index.dat files on Windows continue to store all thevisited web addresses and cookies and some temporary files. Some people statethat this will eventually cause the index.dat files to grow very large, while theaverage user remains unaware of what is going on.”

To get rid of this file and much more, use the Internet Windows Washer , by EUsing

Cognitive Teaching Strategies

10 and 2 Approach: 10 minutes of speaking and 2 minutes of application, or vice-versa

2 Students to 1 computer: Having 2 students work on one computer causescollaborative learning. Hence, synergistic learning is occurring because onestudent may explain to another where their mistakes may have been. The 2students may also begin to explore in more depth the process of thestrategies that are taking place compared to a student working in isolationwho may become complacent with the fact the task is done.
