Note:

Previously, pupils will have seen 'Y' as a consonant (Star Skill 17) at the beginning of words and syllables e.g. 'yoyo' and 'beyond'. They must now learn that the letter 'Y' has another job, and it can make a different sound. It takes the place of the letter 'i' as heard in the words 'cry', 'sky' and 'try' where we hear the long vowel sound (D at the end of words. 'Y' also replaces the short vowel sound (i) at the end of words, although extra stress on the final syllable often changes the sound we hear to (e)' e.g. 'baby', 'industry', 'happy' and 'empty'. 'Y' can also act as a vowel in the middle of words and syllables, and here it clearly represents the vowel 'i' both long ([) and short ({J in words such as 'typist', 'dynamic', 'syrup' and 'pyramid'. Although, these words are in structure up to Star Skill 24 you may decide to only work on them with older pupils.

'Y' as a vowel replaces the

letter 'i' in the middle and at

the end of words. In the

English language words ending

in 'i' such as 'taxi' and

'spaghetti' are known as

linguistic invasions.

... Give vowel Reading Card 24, and explain to the pupil that 'y' is used as a vowel at the end and in the middle of words and syllables.

... The Spelling Choice car� fol 'y' as� vowel are found on three different green pack cards already presented, and these are (i), (i) and (e); these cards must now be found in the pupil 's pack and the _ appropriate boxes ticked. The pupil must b�taught that the Spelling Pack response to the sound (i) for example should be first to repeat the sound (i) and then to name the �tter 'i' as they write it using a cursive script, and then they must continue by repeating the sound (i) and saying "y as a vowel" as they write the letter 'y' in cursive script. Eventually, at Star Skill 74 they will have five different spelling choices for the sound (1).

... Teach all the high frequency and key words for Star Skills 24. These are listed in theMSL Vocabulary Progression information.

... The visual image of a face with the word 'eye' written over the eyes and nose can often be a very helpful association for the correct spelling of the word 'eye'.

... A4 Activity Worksheet 24-s covers plurals with 'y' as a vowel, and pupils should have plenty of practise crossing off the 'y' and adding 'ies'.
