The tests will result in useful, school based data on the progress of our students and will also provide an individual report for your children covering progress in reading, writing, spelling, grammar/punctuation and mathematics. We feel that the best preparation for NAPLAN is regular, everyday quality teaching of the Australian Curriculum. We will not be doing extensive NAPLAN specific preparation apart from ensuring that our students are familiar with test formats. Message from our Principal

Excellence Expo

One of the things most missed last year was Excellence Expo. I am very happy to say that it will be back this year 8 September.

Planning has already begun. You will shortly be contacted with information around how your children can be involved in the Open Art and Open Science categories. In short though, these

categories are open to all our students from Prep to Year 6. To be involved you will need to complete and sign nomination forms and

forward them to the school. The timelines are not long. Nomination forms will need to be received here at school by Monday, 10 May. This will allow us to provide supervision and

support for the time that it will take to complete a piece of art and to carry out the science investigations here at school. Should you

have any questions, please contact us. NAPLAN

As you will be aware, our Year Three and Five students will be completing NAPLAN on 12, 13 and 14 May. The tests will result in

useful, school based data on the progress of our students and will also provide an individual report for your children covering progress in reading, writing, spelling, grammar/punctuation and

mathematics.

We feel that the best preparation for NAPLAN is regular, everyday quality teaching of the Australian Curriculum. We will not be doing extensive NAPLAN specific preparation apart from ensuring that

our students are familiar with test formats. A good sleep and a good breakfast, as on any other school day, are my only other

suggestions. As parents you are entitled to withdraw your children from

NAPLAN should you hold an ideological objection to it. Parents are welcome to contact us with any concerns and in addition we will

contact parents of children who we believe might benefit from adjustments to test conditions.

Australian Curriculum Review

During the last year, the Australian Curriculum, Assessment and Reporting Authority (ACARA) has undertaken a review of the

Australian Curriculum. While this does not mean an overhaul is about to take place, there are thirty recommendations that have been opened for public consultation. In making these

recommendations there has been a recognition of feedback from schools that the curriculum is cluttered in some respects. The

Australian Curriculum has also been benchmarked against the curricula of Finland, British Columbia, Singapore and New Zealand.

If you would like to find out more, I have included a link to ACARA

below. https://www.acara.edu.au/

Change in our Inclusion Centre As I have written about in this newsletter previously, Susanna Davis,

has just accepted a higher classified position at Mansfield State School. She

will be taking up this position next week while providing us with a transition to the new head of special education

services. As Head of Special Education Services here, she and her team have

led the implementation of many of our inclusion strategies to ensure that all

our students feel welcome and supported in the school and have equitable access to our learning

programs and are given the opportunities to demonstrate their

learning and what they can do. Arrangements are presently well advanced to fill the vacancy

created here and I look forward to introducing our new head of special education services shortly. Anthony Gribbin Principal

Anzac Service

Mt Gravatt RSL sub branch Anzac Service The Holland Park RSL sub-branch's

6:50am march and Anzac Day service held at the WJ Scott Park this year enjoyed a large crowd to

offer their respect. With restrictions last year, it was wonderful to see

the numbers swell which signifies that we have a very respectful community in Holland Park.

It was a beautiful sunny morning for

the service, and it was pleasing to see our Holland Park State School representatives showing their respect and support for our troops. Thank you to our students, parents/carers and the school community for supporting the Anzac Day service.

Message from our A/HOC

Year 3 Papua New Guinea Research

This semester in year 3, our students have been engaging in a unit of work called, “Being a good neighbour”. During the unit, the students have been investigating the inquiry questions: • How and why are places similar and different?

• What would it be like to live in a neighbouring country? • What contributions can our school make to help communities and children in these

neighbouring countries? As a part of their unit of work, our students received a visit from a guest speaker, Heather

Doonan. Heather works for a local charity called “Books 4 PNG” is a charity that collects donations of new and used books for children aged 0-14 years for children in our neighbouring

country, Papua New Guinea. From the talk, the students learnt about the similarities and differences between school and home life in PNG and Australia.

The incursion was a valuable learning experience that highlighted how and why people participate in and contribute to their communities.

Here are some thoughts of students in year 3 –

When Heather came, she told us a lot about PNG. Heather told us how different it is to live in PNG compared to living in Brisbane. PNG schools have mud floors and sometimes straw. At

PNG schools, the kids do all the gardening for the school. At PNG homes, the kids help do the cooking around the house. Alex H 3SS

I learnt that the kids from PNG have lots of responsibilities – they go down and catch food and

fish and they do lots of chores and work. I have also learnt that they have a lot of diseases and get sick often. School doesn’t have any proper flooring sometimes it has dry mud. I want to go PNG and help with something.

Elizabeth 3AF

Thank you Heather for coming in to do a presentation for us in your own time. I learned that the children in PNG get to do things that we wouldn't normally get to do at our age, like riding cows. I also learned that some children do not have parents and that they do not celebrate the

same special events like we do in Australia, for example birthdays and Christmas. Jessica H, 3KE

Maths Teasers

1. Peter keeps a piece of string from a parcel that came for his birthday.

It is 30 cm long. He plays with it and makes different shapes.

He thinks that the rectangle with the biggest area that he can make, is a square. His sister Miri disagrees. Who is right and why?

2. Mr Daley bought some pigs, goats and sheep. Altogether he bought 100 animals and spent $600.

Mr Daley paid $21 for each pig, $8 for each goat and $3 for each sheep. There was an even number of pigs. How many of each animal did Mr Daley buy?

3. The Happy Post Shop only sells two denominations of stamps for larger letters and for parcels. It has $3 stamps and stamps of some other value.

It can make up any amount of postage from $24 onwards. It can’t make up $23.

What is the value of the other denomination?

behaviour during the event. An awesome effort from Kendall B, Ivy B, Lilly C, Solomon H, Joseph H,

Thomas H, Zoe H, Ashton L, Jessie M, Max M, Sareya S, Rory T and Maya T.

Senior Sports Day Our inter house athletics days will be held in week 10 of term 2. Our event will be themed to the 2021 Olympics. An event schedule will be provided in week 7.

Tuesday 22nd June – 100m, 200m, field event and tabloid events

Thursday 24th June – 800m, tabloid events and presentations International Relations Committee Online Collaboration

As we continue to build our international partnerships and collaborations, we have been able to create another opportunity to collaborate with Kothari International School located in Noida,

India. 27 students and staff from Kothari International School joined into a story telling of ‘Edward the Emu’ with Mrs Melanie Jones and the students from PMJ. Students and teachers were able to link into our lesson through the Blackboard Collaborate Ultra platform. After the

discussion on the Australian Emu, Mrs Jones read the story and then time was allocated for questions and answers. It was wonderful to have students engage with each other over a story,

and albeit online!

“Our school’s international partnerships are a great way for students and teachers to develop global competency. For teachers it’s a fantastic opportunity for professional development and for students it’s an interesting and engaging way to gain a deeper understanding of other

cultures. And what better place to start, than in the early years?”. Mrs Jones.

I liked seeing their faces on the big Tv. Thomas I liked it when Stevie and I talked to them. Alexa I liked talking into the microphone and saying my favourite character was the snake. Joel

I liked telling them my favourite character was Edward the Emu. Xander

We look forward to continuing to build our international relationships and providing opportunities for all classes to be involved in online collaborations.

From our Community Liaison Officer

Thank you to the parents who have nominated to be Class Parent Representatives for their 2021 classes. We are still needing reps for the following classes; 3AF, 5SG, 5PS, 6CS and 6JC. If

you would like to take on this role, please email me and I can send you the information. For in-catchment families, and those who have siblings commencing in Prep 2022, if you

wouldn’t mind completing the enrolment forms and returning them to the admin office as soon as possible. We will be holding our Enrolment Information Session on Wednesday, 16th

June, 2021 at 9.15am in the school hall.

School banking services will cease to be offered in our school and all

Queensland state schools from 31 July 2021. In line with several other states and territories, the Department of Education’s decision is in response

to the Australian Securities and Investments Commission’s (ASIC) Review of School Banking Programs report in December 2020. Students will be able to maintain their banking relationship directly with their bank.
