School Curriculum:Mary Potter Middle School uses the Haiku Learning System to teach the North Carolina Common Core Standards.

School Website:

Granville County School system has a requirement that all staff members are to create and maintain their website. Depending on job assignment, it is expected that are websites are updated weekly or biweekly. Training is provided at the beginning of each school year to refresh the staff about how to utilize their website as well as to train new incoming teachers.

It highlights student achievements and all major events that the school participates in. One of their means of communicating success is through twitter. The school tweets texts and picture of events as it happens. Parents and teachers have the opportunity to sign up for twitter via text and are able to get all the latest news. All of this is displayed on the MPS website.

The school calendar can be found in the yearly student handbook, which is posted online. The school calendar is updated as needed, and displays all major events and testing information.

The school does not have a written vision/mission statement. It shows the county’s mission statement, which is…. “In partnership with the community, we will continually improve all educational services to prepare our students today for a successful tomorrow.” This is display on their website.

School contact information is located on the website. You can find teacher website pages with their contact information and the administration contact information. The email address of teachers, administration, guidance counselor, and other staff are available through this website.

The school uses Haiku that has the common core links and other information available. The student handbook is online. The current school improvement plan is not available online.

The website is parent friendly. There are written/printed copies of the school newsletters. The purpose of the school’s newsletter is to showcase what’s been going on at the school. The AP stated that we needed to promote our schools because we are competing against the charter schools.

There is not a letter from the principal on the website at this time.

GREETINGS FROM THE ADMINISTRATION

Dear Parents and Students:

Welcome to Mary Potter Middle School! On behalf of the entire faculty, staff and administration, we are pleased to extend a hearty welcome to returning students and their parents, as well as to students who are new to Mary Potter. We hope to continue to build a tradition of hard work and appropriate behavior in all our students here at Mary Potter. This requires that all students do their best academically and behaviorally. Each grade level at Mary Potter is made up of teams that vary from year to year and all is dependent upon student enrollment. Students will be grouped flexibly within each team for core classes. Flexible grouping allows teachers the option of moving students throughout the year within the team to differentiate curriculum and provide the best services available for your child’s education. The student will have the same teacher all year but may be moved to a different class period in order to best meet the needs of your child. Contact regarding academic concerns should be made directly to the teacher as a first step. Our teachers want the absolute best for your child and can tell you how they are doing better than anyone. This handbook is intended to serve as a source of information for students and parents throughout the year. Expectations for students’ conduct and classroom performance remain as high as ever. We operate under the RAMS philosophy: Respect, Attitude, Making Good Decisions, and Safety. We are proud of our facility, and with your continued help and dedication, we will have another successful year. Again, welcome to Mary Potter Middle School. Daily Schedule:

DAILY SCHEDULE

The Daily Schedule is designed to begin the instructional day promptly at 8:30 am. A student arriving later than 8:30 and checking out before 3:35 will be missing vital instruction and activities. It is the intention of the faculty and administration to protect instructional time. Most exploratory classes are assigned to students by the administration but there are a few exploratory classes students may elect to take. These include band, chorus, yearbook, and online courses offered through Granville Online . Exploratory classes for the 2013-2014 school year will operate under an A/B schedule for 80 minutes a class period.
