School Guidelines

School Hours:Playground supervision is on site at 8:30 a.m. The school is not responsible for students who arrive before 8:30 and they may not have access to the building prior that time.

To avoid class disruptions we ask that if parents/guardians come to pick their students up during class hours that they stop at the office and ask Mrs. Dempsey to page their child to meet them in the office. If your child forgets their lunch or home work we also ask that these things be left at the office and Mrs. Dempsey will get it to them.

Students will generally have outdoor recess breaks weather permitting. The decision to keep students indoors is at the discretion of the supervising teachers. Students should always be dressed for the weather.

In case of intense storms, students will remain at school until parents or their designate are contacted. Please ensure all contact information is correct.

Expectations:Students are expected to follow school procedures and classroom rules:

Be seated in the classroom and prepared when class begins. Follow directions the first time they are given. Hand in assignments on time. Use classroom time productively. Respect the rights of others.

All students have an equal right to a happy, social experience and success in academic and school programs. Irresponsible behaviour that infringes upon our school expectations will not be tolerated.

School Routines:

AssembliesAt Stoughton Central School we have assemblies to celebrate student achievement, encourage school spirit and watch performances. Parents and family members are encouraged to attend assemblies.

Allergy Alerts – We are a Nut & Fragrance Aware SchoolWe have a number of staff and students that have nut and fragrance allergies. We ask that parents help us by sending food that is nut free and by refraining from wearing scents in the school.

GENERALThe following school policies provide guidelines for a safe and positive learning environment within Stoughton Central School. They are based on the legislation created by Saskatchewan Education in The Education Act (1995) as well as on the policies of the Southeast Cornerstone School Division.

1. Medication - Parents/guardian are encouraged to administer prescribed medications at home and not during school hours. All requests for the administration of medication at school must be made to the principal. Parents/guardians must complete a Medication Permission Form before any medication can be administered at the school.

2. Personal Belongings - All personal belongings, such as textbooks, binders, shoes, gym strip, MUST have the students’ names on them. Students should take care not to leave personal items in places where they can be lost or damaged. Indoor shoes should be kept in lockers. Outdoor shoes are to be stored on the boot racks. The school is not responsible for lost or stolen articles.

3. Lockers - Each grade 7-12 student is assigned a locker and a lock. Students are required to keep their lockers locked and keep their lock combinations a secret. Lockers are the property of the South East Cornerstone Public School Division #209 and as such, may be searched anytime without warning. SCS is not responsible for articles that have been stolen or misplaced.

4. Absence from School - Students who know in advance that they will be away from school should inform the office at the earliest possible time. Parents must call the school when students are absent. Students are responsible for missed work and assignments (see Attendance Policy on p. 10). Teachers are not responsible for providing work in advance should students be absent from school for extended periods of time (i.e. Family vacations).

5. Phone Use –

Students in Kindergarten to grade 8 will NOT be allowed you use cell phones during school hours from 9:00 am to 3:25 pm. If your student in these grade levels has a cell phone please keep it at home.

The general expectation is that cell phones will not be used during class time for students in grade 9 to 12. However, exceptions will be made for teachers who incorporate cellphone technology into their classes. In these cases cell phone use will be allowed under teacher supervision.

Students are not to be taking pictures or videos on their cell phones at school under any circumstances.

If a teacher has asked a student for their cell phone for any violation of cell phone expectations the student is expected to hand the phone over without question.

First Offense: The teacher will hold the phone until the end of class

Second Offense of the day: The teacher will submit the cell phone to the office. The teacher will contact a parent, and the student may pick up the cell phone from the office at 3:25.

Third Offense: The teacher will submit the cell phone to the office, the principal will call the parent to come and pick up the phone. The parent will discuss future consequences with administration. In case of an emergency, the parent/guardian should call the school directly and an emergency procedure will be implemented.

If a student refuses to hand their phone over the student will be referred to administration and the incident will now be dealt with as a case of defiance.

MUSIC-PLAYING DEVICES The use of music-playing devices (iPods/MP3 players) during class time will be left to the discretion of individual teachers. In classes where these devices are not allowed, the consequences for use are the same as those for use of cell phones.

Parents/guardians wishing or who need to contact their students are asked to leave a message with the office for a return call at the next break.

6. Smoking Cigarettes and Vapors- Students are not permitted to smoke on school property at any time. School staff may confiscate cigarettes, vapors or other tobacco products seen in the possession of students under the age of 18 years, who are on school property.

7. Abuse of Alcohol and Drugs - The school environment shall be alcohol and drug free. It is a violation of school policy and illegal for students to be in possession of, under the influence of, or traffic in alcohol and/or drugs at school or during school sponsored activities. Students in violation of this policy will be subject to the consequences outlined in Southeast Cornerstone School Division policy. These may include contacting the police, parents/guardians, and the Director of Education; confiscation of evidence; suspension from school; compulsory attendance in rehabilitation programs; other disciplinary measures as deemed appropriate by the principal.

8. Dress Code - SCS is a professional learning environment. The purpose of a dress policy is to reflect and promote respect for self and others. Students are encouraged to develop a sense of

Page 14: Student Handbook - South East Cornerstone School … · Web viewAs an extracurricular participant, the student not only represents him/herself, fellow team members, coaches, and teachers,

14 | P a g e

pride in themselves and in our school. Parents and SCS staff work together to prepare students for success, now and in the future. School should be considered a place of business, where the business is learning. Students and staff are expected to dress accordingly for all school sanctioned activities or events.

• Dress and appearance should reflect cleanliness, tidiness, neatness and appropriateness and not interfere with student learning.

• Messages (written or symbolic) on clothing must be appropriate for school.• Tops shoulder straps must be at least 2 fingers in width and no cleavage exposed, no

bare midriffs, no muscle shirts, no underwear showing. • Unacceptable clothing includes clothing which allows for excessive skin to be shown.• Skirts/skorts/shorts must be a suitable length to cover appropriately.• Shoes must be worn at all times in the school. All students are required to have a pair

of indoor shoes that they can wear in school and in gym and a pair of outdoor shoes that are suitable for outside gym class and recess.

• Hats will be removed upon entering the school and for all school sponsored activities, including all events taking place in the gym.

Students in grades 3 to 12 are expected to change for P.E classes therefore expected to adhere to the dress code in P.E. class – appropriate T-shirts, athletic shorts or sweats, running shoes should be worn.

Open toed shoes such as flip-flops do not provide appropriate protection during physical activities. They are not allowed during phys.ed. class, recess or other activities such as track day and are not recommended at any other time.

Students who are in violation of the dress code will be asked to change or cover up. Dress code violations will be entered into Review 360. If a student refuses to abide by the dress code this will be viewed as defiant behavior and will be dealt with as per the behavior policy.

9. Student Use of the Internet - Students will have supervised computer access to the internet. Students are expected to use the internet for school-related activities only. Violations of this policy may result in the loss of internet/computer privileges for an indefinite period of time. Use of the internet will be closely supervised by staff members. All students are required to sign an acceptable use commitment to only use the internet for appropriate uses.

10. School Books and Materials - Students assigned school textbooks and materials are responsible for the care of these items. The costs associated with lost or damaged books or materials will be the responsibility of the student/parent. Parents will be invoiced for lost or damaged items.

11. Library Privileges - The Resource Centre at SCS contains a wealth of material to support the educational endeavors and recreational interests of our students and staff. Our primary expectation for the library is to show consideration for others. With that in mind, staff and students are asked to maintain a quiet learning environment, to sign out any items they

12. All Work In - Study Hall for Success - Study Hall is intended to provide students in grades 7 to 12 who have fallen behind in their academic work time to get caught up. This includes

• homework not done• assignments not completed on time

The procedures to be followed in Study Hall are as follows

• Study Halls will be conducted from 12:21 to 1:00 daily.• Students assigned to Study Hall will be required to serve the time at noon hour

on the following Study Hall day.• Students will be given three opportunities to attend study hall and complete the

outstanding work. If they fail to attend or are continually disruptive to others they will be referred to administration and may receive an in school suspension during which time they will be required to finish the work.

• Students in Study Hall will be expected to bring the assigned work with them and to work quietly for the entire period of time assigned.

• Persistent violation of Study Hall guidelines will result in a team meeting with parents and more severe discipline including the loss of extracurricular privileges and possible suspension in/from school.

13. Student Government - The administration and staff of SCS support a Student Council consisting of student representatives under the supervision of a staff member. The goals of this council for the current school year are to

• Create and maintain a positive, healthy school climate.• Create activities which help every individual in our school to feel valued and welcome.• Allow each individual in the school the opportunity to become a giving person by

contributing on a school level to worthy community causes • Promote the improvement of the overall appearance and student-friendliness of our

school.14. Intra-mural Program - The Phys. Ed. department conducts a supervised team sports program at noon hour for students in grades 7 to 12. Participation by all students is strongly encouraged.

15. Open Campus Policy – During lunch K-6 students may not leave school property unattended unless they have a note dated and signed by a parent and by the school principal. Notes should indicate the date or date range that students are to be allowed to leave. Please be aware that when students do leave the school over the noon hour with parent permission, the school does not assume responsibility for the students.

Page 17: Student Handbook - South East Cornerstone School … · Web viewAs an extracurricular participant, the student not only represents him/herself, fellow team members, coaches, and teachers,

17 | P a g e

Grades 7-12 students are permitted to leave the school property at lunch hour without obtaining consent. However, students are expected to report to the office before leaving the school and sign out. Again, the school is not responsible for students during this time. If students behave inappropriately during lunch the open campus privilege will be revoked.

16. Riding the School Bus – Students and parents are reminded that students are responsible to the school for their conduct from the time they board the bus in the morning until they are returned home at the end of the school day. The rules of conduct apply equally on the bus and at school. The bus driver is required to report any infractions or misconduct to the Principal. Students who persist in violating school bus rules are subject to disciplinary action by the school. Non-bus students and students wishing to ride a bus other than their own must receive prior authorization from both the bus driver and the school board.

17. Extra-curricular Programs - The school sponsors a variety of programs which are normally conducted after school and on weekends. Inter-school team sports, drama, yearbook, student council are examples of such programs. All students are encouraged to participate in these programs; however, students should be prepared to commit to the required amount of time and energy to be successful. Students participating in extra-curricular activities are expected to abide by the Code of Conduct for Athletes as presented by the Phys. Ed. department. Parents/guardians are encouraged to be involved in these programs as coaches, supervisors, drivers, organizers, fund-raisers, and fans.

Extra-curricular Code of ConductPhilosophy:

Participation in any extracurricular activity is an important part of the educational process. The primary goal of these activities is to teach students character and self-discipline skills which will enable them to develop to their highest potential. As role models for their peers and younger students, students who participate in extracurricular activities are held accountable for their actions at a higher standard than other students. This code applies to every student who participates in an extracurricular activity at Stoughton Central School.

At SCS we believe in teaching our young people high moral standards, integrity, discipline, character, sportsmanship, citizenship, the importance of teamwork, and the value of hard work and true dedication. The staff pledges to dedicate their time, energy, and financial resources to this effort.

This code represents the effort of SCS to provide clear expectations for all participating students and parents/guardians. It is the responsibility of each student to know and understand the obligations of this code as well as the established consequences that will be imposed if/when the provisions of this code are violated.

Remember, participating in extracurricular activities is a privilege and not a right.

Page 18: Student Handbook - South East Cornerstone School … · Web viewAs an extracurricular participant, the student not only represents him/herself, fellow team members, coaches, and teachers,

18 | P a g e

Students participating in any sport that requires a jersey will be required to leave a $100.00 post dated June 31st, postdated check which will be returned when the jersey is returned. Students will not receive their jersey until the deposit is received by the coach. Checks will be cashed for students whose jerseys are not returned.

Obligations as an Extracurricular Participant In addition to the expectations of this code of conduct, a participating student must at all times conform to expectations of conduct of the extracurricular activity in which he/she is participating as well as the school expectations.

• Each activity has certain requirements that lead to the development of specific skills requiring different types of training. Every athlete has an obligation to know the rules of their sport.

• As an extracurricular participant, the student not only represents him/herself, fellow team members, coaches, and teachers, but also the school, its student body and the community. For these reasons, the participating student is expected to display the highest form of character and sportsmanship. If at any time a student’s actions bring harm or discredit to the activity of which the student is a member or to the school, the student will be subjected to disciplinary action, including suspension and/or removal from the extracurricular activity.

• A participating student is supported actively by the school and the community. Many volunteers work long hours to provide the finest equipment and facilities so that your extracurricular groups can have the best possible opportunity to compete on an even basis with any established program.

• Participating students are held accountable for the equipment/materials issued to them and shall reimburse the school for any equipment/materials not returned or damaged beyond normal wear and tear. Participating students are expected to exercise respect for and take care of the facilities and equipment provided by the school.

General Requirements/Consequences• Three unexcused absences from practice/game will result in the student being

suspended or removed from the activity.• In order for a participating student to practice or participate in a game/activity, he/she

must have a passing average, have all work in and be in good standing with their classroom teacher(s)

• In order for a participating student to practice or participate in a game/activity, he/she must be in attendance for at least 50% of the school day

• Any student who is officially dismissed from a team before the season is over (including the playoffs) may not participate with any other athletic team until that season is completely over. A student is considered a member of a team if he/she is listed on the final team roster.

• Students may participate in more than one sport at a time if the seasons overlap, but they may not quit a sport part way through the season in order to participate in another

Page 19: Student Handbook - South East Cornerstone School … · Web viewAs an extracurricular participant, the student not only represents him/herself, fellow team members, coaches, and teachers,

sport. If conflicts occur the student must try to work it out with both coaches. Their primary commitment, however, is to the team they started with first.

• All participating students are required to turn in all uniforms, materials and equipment that are issued to them. A student may not participate in another extracurricular activity until he/she has turned in his/her equipment to the coach/faculty representative. Grade 12 students who have not returned jerseys and equipment will not be allowed to purchase grad supper tickets.

Compulsory Student Attendance

Students are required to attend school in accordance with the Education Act.

The South East Cornerstone Public School Division #209 and Stoughton Central School believe regular and punctual attendance is necessary for students to maximize their learning and achievement. The Division and SCS also:

Believes in a collaborative approach the school and the parent/guardian in expecting and supporting regular attendance of students.

Requires that attendance be tracked and recorded consistently on a daily basis and investigate reasons for non-attendance.

Requests that parents/guardians communicate to the school with prior notice of a student’s unavoidable absence.

Understands that ongoing collaboration may be needed to support students when avoidable absences/tardiness negatively impacts a student’s learning and achievement.

Follow-up:

1. When a student is recorded absent without permission or notification from the parent /guardian, the Principal or designate shall:

a. Contact parents/guardians by phone each time the student is absent. b. Investigate reasons for non-attendance with a focus on intervention and

prevention. Other school or system personal may be involved. c. Mail or email attendance summary information to parents/guardians of students

with absences of 10% and greater each month.d. Students with Chronic Absenteeism (10% or greater) will be referred to the

We would ask that you provide us the chance to address any concerns by following this protocol before turning to Facebook or other external forms of communication.

1. Talk to your child’s teacher: Your child’s teacher should always be the first person that you talk to when you have concerns about issues in the classroom, on the playground, or with another student. Your child’s teacher will do their best to address your concerns in a prompt, professional manner.

2. Talk to the Principal or Vice Principal: should your child’s teacher be unable to address your concerns in an acceptable manner then you are encouraged to bring the issue to the administrator with the teacher.

3. Talk to the Superintendent: If the school has been unable to address the concerns adequately we will contact the superintendent to request assistance.
