Message from the Coordinator Welcome to our first Spring/Summer edion of Achievements. This year is all about ca- reers and college. In Spring, we hosted several excing acvies designed to expose stu- dents to various industries and expand their cultural horizons. This summer, UB will in- troduce a new career-focused curriculum to help students plan for their future. Also, in July, we take a 6-day/5-night trip to Northern California, vising 6 colleges including Sac- ramento State, UC Davis, Fresno State, CSU Stanislaus, UC Merced, and CSU Bakersfield! Spring /Summer 2013—Vol. 5, No. 2 -A Newsleer Highlighng Upward Bound Students and their Academic Success Student Spotlight W ith a hecc schedule filled with AP classes, water polo, swimming, symphonic band and marching band, Rocio Valen- n, a graduang senior at Cathe- dral City High School, knows that she needs to “dig deep” in order to push herself to succeed. With plans aend University of Red- lands majoring in Anthropology, Rocio wants to work in a museum and research ancient civilizaons. When asked what movates her she says “My family really mo- vates me to succeed. Even though things can get stressful, their intenons are posive I know that they only want the best for me. I want to succeed in life and make my parents proud. Up- ward Bound has helped Rocio get a beer understanding abut col- lege. She say “UB has given me great resources and support, whether it be academically or emoonally and their help is something that I will never ever lose or forget.” CONGRATULATIONS, Rocio! A variety of industries were represented, including Medicine (Dr. Emma Simmons), Education (Shirley Guzman & Arthur Kimball), Art (Martha & Guillermo Valentin), Broadcast Journalism (Hernan Quintas & Gloria Margarita), Public Service (Maggie Zepeda), Engineering (Ashley DePottey & Aretha Sam- uel), Law Enforcement (Kevin Cole), Social Service (Marcela Manriquez), Non-Profit (Elizabeth Tole- do), and Banking (Vanessa Hernandez). There were also remarks by Trustee Sanchez and Mike Du- ran of DSUSD, with our Keynote Address by Brandon Weimer, co-Owner, Brandini Toffee of Rancho Mirage. Rocio V. Upward Bound at College of the Desert is a federal Trio Program funded 100% by the U.S. Depart-ment of Education. The program is designed to prepare local high

school students to enter and graduate from college with an

Associate’s or Bachelor’s degree.

On Saturday, April 20th, 43 students and 5 Chaperones, rose early in the morning for a 7am departure to the City of

Angeles to tour both The Getty Center Los Angeles and the University of California, Los Angeles. This free museum

provides stunning views of the LA area and the Architecture Tour gave students an overview of the rich history of the

Getty architects and their design influences. While at UCLA, even on a Saturday, students were able to see the lively

atmosphere of the campus and the nearby Westwood Village.
