Lesson AimsBy the end of the lesson students will be able to make a drawing to solve a word problem.

Discipline-basedLearning

Mathematics Solve word problems by using number sentences involving multiplication or division where there is no remainder (ACMNA082)

InterdisciplinaryLearning

Children’s Prior Learning (what do the children already know/what have they covered?)Mrs Sandra Davis informed me that the students have done lots of problem solving activities and the following 6-8 students have had difficulty in how to complete mathematical word problems.

Teaching Skill Development (What do you want to develop as a teacher?)To guide students and educate them in understanding how to use the strategy to draw out their mathematical problem that has been asked.

Teaching and Learning Preparation (resources etc)Worksheet for make a drawingSmall whiteboards and whiteboard markers & whiteboard markers

Explain to students – They are going to make a drawing to solve a word problem.

Session StructureLesson PhaseOrientation /Introduction

How best to motivate and explain the importance of this lesson? This should be for about 5 minutes with links to prior learning or experiences.

The lesson will follow on from another lesson Mrs Sandra Davis has taken with the whole class about two problems.I work through the first word problem with the students which helped the students to focus.

Teaching strategy/Learning Activities

What will support the students to learn the concepts you are trying to teach and to reach the learning outcomes? How will you cater for a diversity of learning needs?

Help strategies and work alongside the students scaffolding their learning. Talk the students through the first problem and explain when needed.Work through the second, third and fourth problem assisting the students when needed. The students that have grasped the concept they can help other students to learn the strategy for drawing problems. If students have time to spare they can make up their own mathematical drawing problems.

Conclusion /Closure

How will you capture the main ideas of the lesson? Recap/revision etc.

By talking about it as a small group and by helping each other. If students are not grasping the concept we can make up some easier mathematical problems that would not take long to draw.

Assessment Strategies

What are the assessment strategies used throughout this lesson? These should be closely aligned to your lesson aims. How you will you record student learning outcomes?

Observation Taking NotesTaking photos of students drawings on whiteboard

Introduction to the lesson

81/2

The introduction went really well and students understood the concepts from the start.

Planning & organisation of materials, resources 9.5

The students enjoyed using the small whiteboards to draw their answers to the word problems.

Communication with students; explanation, questioning skills etc. 9.5

There was a lot of scaffolding taking place amongst the six students.

Selection of learning tasks 10

Good lesson plan following whole class teaching on word problems.

Monitoring/assessment of student learning throughout the lesson 10

Monitoring the students was easy as there were only six of them.

Conclusion of lesson; transition to next lesson 10

The lesson went extremely well and the students learnt through interactions and scaffolding.

ReflectionWhat was good about this lesson? Why?The lesson plan went extremely well as Faith, Tarryn, Josh M, Will, Josh.S and Adrian learnt a new strategy of solving word problems by drawing the word problem.

What did you learn about teaching and learning (students’ and your own) from this lesson?Working with a small group of students after a whole-class-lesson on the chosen topic helps capitalize the lesson in smaller groups where students can engage, further inquire and investigate.

Near the end of the lesson students paired up andmade up their own word problems testing each otherI joined in with the fun
