There are a few different ways to start finding the right Study Group each semester:

- Course Categories. Categories help you to pursue a diverse and balanced menu of Study Group Courses in different disciplines over time.- Intensity. Study Groups are offered with three different intensity levels that communicate the investment expected of each participant. There are no requirements for Low Intensity courses. Standard Intensity courses have an attendance requirement of at least 65% and 1-3 hours of preparation/review weekly. High Intensity courses require 80% attendance and 3+ hours of work outside of the group meeting weekly.- When? The day and time each course is offered may be a consideration.- How Long? You can choose to take a Study Group Course that lasts for a full 14-week semester or a 7-week term or you can enroll in a Study Group Track that lasts for a longer period of time and is meant to be completed in its entirety but can be joined at any time.

A Study Group Track is designed to take a group of people through a preset collection of in-depth studies centered on a specific area of discipleship. Tracks vary in duration and consist of multiple courses. Each track will be led by a Lead Teacher, who will teach the majority of the courses while other teachers will be utilized for specific courses.

HOW TO STUDY THE BIBLE (SPRING 2)This Study Group is designed to teach you how to study the Bible. It is the Word of Life with God Himself as the author. Reading and studying God’s Word is a divine interaction with God Himself. Therefore, learning to study and understand the Bible is crucial to the growth of every believer.

CHRISTIAN BASICS (SPRING 1)As Jesus followers, we are not defined by the rules we keep but by the One who we are in a covenant relationship with. Jesus said, “ABIDE in ME!” Abiding in Christ has two aspects: our position in Christ and our pursuit of Christ. We pursue Christ by practicing such basics as Bible Reading, Prayer, Worship, Evangelism, Serving, Stewardship, Fasting, Meditation, and Journaling to name a few. We pursue habits of grace for the purpose of becoming more like Christ.

Teacher: David BrewerLength: 1 YearTime: Sundays, 9:30amIntensity: Standard

The Foundations Study Group Track will take participants on a one-year journey of pursuing an abiding relationship with Christ. The courses will teach participants how to practice basic spiritual disciplines with specific emphasis on Bible study and prayer. Emphasis will also be placed on what the church is and what our role is in it. Participants will also be given a introductory foundation in core doctrines of the faith.

David Brewer, one of our elders, has been teaching for over 25 years with most of those years taking place at Tri-Cities Baptist Church. David and his wife Lynda have been married for 25 years and have 4 children (Abigail, Philip, Leah and Elizabeth). David puts a premium on handling God’s Word with precision and on using the entirety of Scripture to communicate God’s revelation to man. When asked what he loves most about teaching, David replied “I love seeing the Bible come alive in my personal study and in the group interaction that follows.”

The Marriage Study Group Track will take participants on a one-year journey of pursuing intimacy with Christ and their spouses. In addition to taking courses on marriage, the family, and biblical manhood womanhood, they will learn how to practice basic spiritual disciplines together, learn how to gospel informs and influences their marriages, and how to navigate various cultural issues together.

MEANING OF MARRIAGE (SPRING 1)Modern culture would have you believe that everyone has a soul mate; that romance is the most important part of a successful marriage; that marriage does not mean ‘til death do us part, but merely for as long as my needs are being met; and that when serious differences arise, divorce is the best solution. According to the Bible, all of these modern-day assumptions miss what marriage is all about. This study is for anyone from singles to couples considering marriage to those who have been married recently or for a long time.

Matthew – Part 1PSALMSTeacher: Roger Barker Time: Sunday, 9:30amIntensity: Low

Interest in Jesus never seems to decline, even as fewer and fewer people in our culture are willing to follow Him. Popular books on Amazon include titles such as Who Is This Man? and Jesus: A Pilgrimage. Recently, CNN ran a prime-time series entitled, “Finding Jesus: Faith, Fact, Forgery.” Much of the curiosity revolves around the true identity of Jesus. Is He who He claimed to be, or was He a creation of the early Christians? Matthew sets out to demonstrate the true identity of Jesus as Messiah, Son of David, Son of God.

This study will walk through the first 13 chapters of a book that has grit and glory rolled into the true story of Jesus walking our earth. As we see Him live, we have a greater understanding of how we are to live.

Roger Barker was saved at 19 years old. He has taught the Bible since the early 1980’s. He has taught all ages from 3rd graders to senior adults. His greatest joy is to see the “spiritual light come on” as they are able to see what God says through His Word. Roger enjoys teaching through various books of the Old and New Testaments because he realizes the need to study the Old Testament to better understand the New.

1 & 2 Corinthians1 & 2 CORINTHIANSTeacher: Bill WhaleyTime: Sundays, 9:30amIntensity: Low

This Study Group will study both of Paul’s canonical letters to the church at Corinth. His first letter contains one of the most quoted chapters in all of the Bible: 1 Corinthians, but we will see that this epistle is about more than love and marriage. At the heart of 1 Corinthians is the reality that the good news of Jesus Christ saves, changes, and unites God’s people. In 2 Corinthians, the apostle Paul defends the authenticity of his authority and teaching, helping his readers see that the gospel is full of seemingly paradoxical truths—strength from weakness, life through death, and comfort in affliction. Highlighting how the gospel confronts our own culture’s expectations and drawing implications for all of life, we will seek to discover the truth that the gospel humbles the powerful while strengthening the weak.

Minor Prophets overviewIn the world of literature there is a genre of fictional writing known as short stories. Authors such as Mark Twain, O. Henry, Rudyard Kipling, and Edgar Allen Poe have captured our attention with their stories that are easily understood and entertaining with few characters and can be read in one sitting. Old Testament biblical literature has its own set of short stories, and they are very different from the fiction of the secular world. For starters, they aren’t fiction - they are truth! And they don’t come from the minds of mere humans - they are given to us by God himself through His prophet servants. And to be honest - we don’t always find them to be an easy read. Frankly, sometimes they intimidate us, but they are very, very important. We call them Minor, but it’s doubtful God considers anything He says to be minor. Once you meet the prophets, their kings, and their audiences and get a glimpse into their lives, all the awkward language and imagery will suddenly make sense. The feelings of intimidation will disappear and as the pages of promises, proclamations, and prophecy come to life you’ll wonder why you never spent time in these books before.

Lisa Ferguson was first introduced to the inductive method of Bible study in Bible Study Fellowship in the early 1980s. She then trained as a study leader and instructor for Precept Ministries. She has led Precept Bible Studies for over 20 years in the Tri-Cities area and travelled for Precept Ministries as an Inductive Study Trainer in TN, VA, KY, and NC for 5 years before becoming a full-time teacher for one of TCBC’s women’s classes.

THE GOSPEL IN CREATIONTeacher: Mick FunderburgTime: Sundays, 9:30 am SPRING 2Intensity: StandardCost: $5

Our culture is largely detached from God and willingly ignorant of His hand in creation and in world events, but thechurch is not nearly as effective in reaching the lost as it wasonly a generation ago. It is the duty of all Christians to beready to give an answer.

This one-of-a-kind study series will equip you to see theworld through “biblical glasses” and to answer the questionsour culture is asking about the authority and accuracy of the Bible. You will learn a solid creation-based worldview and you will see that, contrary to popular belief, operational science (science based upon observation and experimentation) actually contradicts the idea of evolution and “millions of years.” The facts of nature, rightly interpreted, provide an irrefutable case for the accuracy and trustworthiness of the book that claims to be the inspired word of the Creator Himself! Further, you will clearly discover that the first 11 chapters in Genesis are foundational to your understandingof the Gospel message, and, therefore, critical to your understanding of our mission here on earth.

Life In The SpiritLIFE IN THE SPIRITTeacher: Mel RichardsTime: Wednesday, 6:30 pm (SPRING 1)Intensity: Standard

This study will take an in-depth look at Scriptures, particularly Romans 8 and Galatians 5, on how Jesus followers are to be continuously filled with the Holy Spirit in our abiding relationship with Him. The idea of the Holy Spirit can be overwhelming and mysterious, but we will examine how believers are called to live in pursuit of and be fully empowered by the Holy Spirit to overcome sin, live in freedom, carry out the mission of God, and share the love of Jesus.

Melanie Richards primarily serves TCBC as one of our Worship Directors. She is a graduate of The Southern Baptist Theological Seminary through Cohort 2 of the Tri-Cities Leadership Training Program. Melanie has a passion for leading congregational worship, teaching, and disciplining women.

This Study Group will seek to understand what the Bible says about decision-making. There are some really unbiblical ideas about how God guides our decisions, and, yet the Bible gives us some amazing truth about how God does guide us. Our hope is that this class will provide some practical, biblical help.

Psalm 127:3-5 tells us that children are a special gift from the Lord and happy are those who have them. Basically, being a parent is a tremendous privilege and opportunity given from God to us! The psalmist then goes on to say this, “Like arrows in the hand of a warrior are the children of one’s youth.” What does a mighty warrior do with arrows? He launches them! The picture and charge that God has given to us as parents is that it is our responsibility and privilege to raise our children to love Him, to equip them to serve Him, and then to send them out so that they can leverage their lives for the glory of God so that others can know Him. What an awesome and weighty responsibility! The goal of this study group in not to give you a ten step plan that guarantees you will pop a Jesus-loving disciple maker out at the end of the process. Instead, the aim of this study group is to lay a foundation for what gospel-centered parenting actually is, to help you lead your children with purpose from conviction, and to give you tools and a roadmap to create your own personal family discipleship plan. Ultimately, parenting is a fight for our families’ joy. So what are you fighting for, and are you ready to launch? **This study group is designed for current parents, guardians, grandparents, etc who are directly involved in the discipleship process of their children. It is also designed for married couples who desire to become parents one day.**

MY FAMILY DISCIPLESHIP PLANTeacher: Austin WhittingtonTime: Wednesdays, 6:30 pm, SPRING 2Intensity: Standard

TCBC’s Family Discipleship Plan (FDP) is a road map designed to help parents and grandparents disciple the next generation. It is a big plan that stretches from infancy to adulthood. Such a grand adventure can feel overwhelming. That feeling is a lie! Together we can disciple our children with diligence, week after week, year after year. Through an interactive, coaching format you will explore the FDP with others like you. You will study the same Big Truth that your family will focus on that week and prepare practical ways to share God’s Word with your children.

We hope every parent and grandparent of a preschool or elementary aged child will come together for this special FDP focused study group.

Missions exists to increase the worship of God through the praise of His glory in the hearts of His people. In this Study Group, we will set out to understand the Biblical message that God’s passion for His own glory is His central motive for world evangelism in missions. This course serves as a general introduction to missions. It seeks to integrate biblical theology, church history, and practical theology and apply these disciplines to the church’s task of world evangelization.

INTRO TO APOLOGETICSTeacher: Mick FunderburgTime: Sundays, 9:30 am SPRING 1Intensity: Standard

Apart from the Bible and our personal faith experiences, is there any other evidence to substantiate the claims of Christianity? Is there extra-Biblical evidence for the existence of God? How does the story of reality depicted in the Bible stand up to critical scrutiny? What can science tell us about the accuracy of the Christian world view? Can faith and reason co-exist? Questions of this kind have historically been addressed by the field of study called Biblical Apologetics (from the Greek “apologia” – “to defend” the Christian faith). In this introductory course, we will examine these questions and many others as we survey the overwhelming evidence, from multiple disciplines of study, which support the truth of Christianity. We will come to understand that faith in Jesus Christ is not a “blind leap into the dark”, but rather a “sensible step into the light”. We will learn how a proper understanding of apologetics can help Christians combat skepticism, defend Biblical truth, strengthen our personal faith, remove intellectual barriers to the Gospel and serve as a springboard for initiating Gospel conversations with unbelievers.
