Introduction

Lamp has immense importance in HinduDharma. Lighting a lamp means awakening

the energy of soul in the self. Our scriptureshave recommended lighting of lamps duringvarious religious rituals. The use of oil orghee has been prescribed for lighting a lampand the candle does not nd mentionanywhere. Why is it so To understand this!

we will see here the e"ect of a candle! an oillamp and a ghee lamp on theenvironment. This research will help usunderstand and appreciate the thought thathas gone into the simple act of lighting alamp during Deepawali.

Depending on the obective! light an oil or aghee lamp (and not a candle- in religiousrituals

+ *andle :Today we see that ceremoniousoil lamps are not lit with another oil lampbut with a candle. ' birthdayis celebrated by blowing out candles on acake. Wa% of the candle does not burncompletely! due to which TamaBpredominantvibrations in the environment get activatedto a greater e%tent. Hence! the candle isconsidered TamaBpredominant from thespiritual perspective. 's a result! tamasikvibrations spread in the environment when acandle is lit or when a lamp is lit with a
