Stuff We Did, Stuff We Will Do, and Missing Friends

I was sitting in my man chair in front of the Christmas tree on Christmas

Eve. Looking at the presents all wrapped up, the different size boxes, the colorful wrapping paper and the name tags. I wondered what could be in those presents. I remember as a little kid that the anticipation would almost kill me. I couldn’t go to sleep the night before and I lay awake in bed listening for the sound of hoofs on the roof.

GWRRA Chapter NC-I Sponsorship Your ad in this newsletter will be sent 12 times a year (once a month) to our chapter members, GWRRA chapters all

over the state of North Carolina, the NC State Directors and others. It will also be posted on the Chapter NC-I Website:

gwrranci.org. Your support is greatly appreciated and will help Chapter NC-I to operate throughout the year. Thank You.

Chapter NC-I will have a new meeting place in 2020. It will be at Ryan’s Steakhouse on NC Hwy 191 at the corner of Ridgefield Blvd just south the Asheville Outlets at I-26 exit 33. The address is:

Ryan’s Steakhouse

1000 Brevard Rd Asheville NC (828) 665-9963

NC-I will continue to meet on the 4th Saturday of the month. We will eat at 9 and meet at 10.

The January meeting will be one not to be missed. Your ACD Johnny and I will be attending the annual Officers meeting in Greensboro. That means that CD Dianne and MEC David will be doing the meeting. It should prove to be a very interesting start to the New Year.

So before I sign off I want to look back at a couple of events that Chapter NC-I experienced in December.

Nineteen NC-I members attend the Country Tonight Christmas Show. It was held in Pigeon Forge and many members spent the night before returning home. The evening started with a nice dinner at Ap-plewood Farmhouse Restaurant. This was followed up with the musical Christmas show. It featured singing and dancing along with a special tribute to our veter-ans. Of course, the second half was all Christmas songs. Afterwards the stars of the show were in the lobby to meet, greet and sign autographs. The evening ended with a special trip to Krispy Kreme. Thanks to our NC-I ACD Johnny for putting this fine evening together.

The Christmas party was a lot of fun with just too much food and plenty of laughter. Guests included three kings (David N., Dave S., Jerry P.) who brought the house down. We played a game of Who Am I that left everyone knowing way too much about each other. Lura played some fun games and Wil knocked it out of the park with the music. Thanks much to Jerry and Brenda for providing the venue for this mar-velous evening.

On a sad note long time member and officer Robin Ferguson passed away on Christmas day. Robin and Tammy had served as webmasters and newsletter edi-tors. More recently they were the 2019 Chapter Cou-ple of the Year and 2019 Ride Coordinator. Robin was very generous in supporting charities that helped children. He was consistently on stage at Ride for Kids events as the top fundraiser. He was also a top fundraiser for the Ride to Clyde that benefited the Baptist Children’s Homes. Robin always had a big grin on his face especially when riding his silver trike with his Gold Wing family. Robin was a good friend and he will be missed.

Best wishes to everyone in the New Year. Be safe in your travels until we meet again, and in the meantime, ride often, ride safe, and just…

Happy New Year

A nother year is about to come to an end and what a year it

has been lot of rides, new mem-bers, and fellowship.

I really look forward to the coming year I think it will be even better

than last year if that is possible. A BIG THANKS TO ALL STAFF MEMBERS that did a good job and all members for enjoying all the things we did.

Red Cross Training

I have been further investigating available Red Cross Training courses for our membership.

I attempted to determine the availability of group discounts for training tuition fees. With regard to fees, they were not able to quote any group discounts until they had an organization name, contact, number of attendees, and address of the location where the courses would be taught. The number must be greater than eight to qualify for any discount whatso-ever.

I was able to ascertain how to obtain listings of classes being offered in the Asheville and Hender-sonville areas. I placed my emphasis on First Aid / CPR / AED training.

Some classes are taught in Asheville or Henderson-ville in a classroom setting

Other classes are primarily taught on-line with a final In-classroom session to be sure the on-line students fully understand what they have learned.

The on-line train-ing can be taken at the students’ own pace.

Successful com-pletion of course training results in a two year certifi-cation for each student.

In order to join an already scheduled class please take the following steps:

Log in on the following website: https://www.redcross.org/takeaclass

Then:

Click on Find a Class (Be sure to click on “Allow Current Location” box for local class offerings. If necessary, enter a city or zip code.)

L ight Emit-ting Diode

(LED) technol-ogy has been around in some form for many decades. Re-member the red LED watches

from years ago that were phased out by LCD (liquid crystal display) watches. Time marches on and nowa-days LED lights are everywhere. These days it’s diffi-cult to find a household incandescent light bulb, partly because of government mandates requiring more efficient light bulbs to reduce energy usage. The primary focus here will be LED bulbs for motorcy-cles.

The first thing you notice from a LED headlight is that it’s whiter, and that white light illuminates the roadway and hazards better than the halogens they replace. Instead of the yellowish hue from halogens, LED’s provide a brighter white light. Another benefi-cial surprise with LED headlights is the road signs and road markings pop and are more noticeable. The

increase in the reflectivity from these traffic control devices was an unex-pected benefit when I upgraded my head-lights on my 2005 Goldwing.

Of course the increase in whiteness and brightness makes you a little more visible. Anytime you can add a new part that increases conspicuity and is actually functional I consider that a worthwhile expense. Per-haps you have already converted to LED lighting and are aware how much better they are at illuminating the roadway.

[Editor’s note: Be sure your headlights are properly aimed. Glare from the whiter LED light is even more blinding to oncoming traffic than with halogens.]

So where else might you use LED lighting? The rear tail lights are a great place to add LED lighting. Many of us have added LED spoiler brake lights, hyper flash brake lights or other similar types of lights. We already know that the LED lights are brighter but there is at least one more benefit from using the LEDs in tail light applications; the speed LED bulbs reach full brightness. LED bulbs are full bright as soon as electrical current is received, incandescent

bulbs are noticeably slower reaching full bright as the bulb filament heats up. While this may seem insignifi-cant, the ability for a motorist to recognize that brake light a little bit sooner is not.

An incandescent bulb takes about 250 milliseconds (¼ second) to reach full brightness, in that amount of time you cover 22 feet at 60 mph. That’s a significant distance that might reduce the space cushion to pre-vent a collision. Remember, the goal is to improve safety even if it’s only a slight improvement.

A few additional benefits from LED lighting is they consume less energy, generate less heat and typically last longer. It’s important to note while the LED bulb can last longer it doesn’t mean it’s a forever bulb. LED bulbs do burn out and stop working, but typi-

cally last much longer than conventional bulbs.

The reduced energy draw is a benefit to those that may already be reaching the limit on electrical load with heated gear and other accessories. An example of reduced electrical current use benefit might be as simple as forgetting to turn off the ignition. Suppose you accidently leave the key on and all your halogen lights are on (including fog lights) that can be a sub-stantial drain on the battery. 13668-01 The electrical drain could even get to the point that the battery would not be able to turn the motor over. Granted these would very isolated cases but the LED bulbs might give you a longer grace period and prevent the battery from being drained. Anytime you can improve efficiency in the electrical system benefits will be real-ized one way or another.

There’s an interesting side note about LEDs generat-ing less heat. Traffic signal bulbs began to be switched over to LED bulbs years ago in an effort to reduce energy use, increase life span, increase brightness and reduce maintenance costs. An unfortu-nate side effect of that change in north-ern climates was the LED bulbs didn’t generate enough heat to melt the snow. The increase in life span, brightness, re-duced energy use and cost is very benefi-cial for municipalities, so the snow issue is an acceptable negative. Some agencies have added heaters to keep the fixture temperature above freezing. This negates some of the energy savings during winter

months, but it’s activated only when there’s a chance ice or

snow could obscure the lenses.
