8 stylemg.com - October 2012
Unless, of course, it’s a Style Readers’ Choice Award! In
that case, winning is quite impressive. Over the years, our
annual contest of readers’ choices for local favorites has
become the talk of the town, with competition becoming increas-
ingly fierce. We are all presented with hundreds, if not thousands
of choices a day – some decisions easier than others – but the
ones we celebrate this month are those shared by many. With
thousands of votes counted, this year we proudly give you an
expanded list – including many new categories – of local winners.
The numerous awardees run the gamut from favorite breakfast
place and favorite place to get vegetarian food to favorite kids’
activity and favorite pet groomer, all the way to favorite local
athlete, favorite wedding DJ and favorite best kept secret.
My favorite secret (which is secret no more) is keeping this
month’s magazine handy in my car or purse for when I’m in the
market for something new...like a new Thai restaurant or some-
where to get my oil changed. It’s a good reference for finding
people, businesses, services and activities that have been ap-
proved of by so many fellow residents.
Speaking of secrets, if you have a high school senior this year, don’t
miss Melissa Camilleri Magliola’s “Countdown to College” in Our Kids.
She gives succinct strategies and tips to ease the stress and increase
a kid’s success throughout the college admissions process.
Also in this issue, make your next party (the holidays are on
our heels!) a winner withJamila B. Khan’s “Host with the Most”
in Home Design. Add a little spark to your shin-dig with these
seven hospitable must-haves. And since you will also want to look
glowing at your gatherings, check out “Forever Young” in Health
& Wellness for the best anti-aging products on the market. From
creams and serums to hair and smile care, the list will set you on
a path to the fountain of youth.
Looking to get involved in the community or find a new activ-
ity? Find more to see and do within the pages of What’s Up, FYI
and the Calendar. Until next month, enjoy the new season in town
and let your old favorites know how much
you love them. •— Desiree
We’d love to hear from you – send us your
community events (for Calendar), your
favorite recipe & photo (for Thanksgiving
Reader Recipes), and any other story ideas to
winning isn’t everything...

After Roseville resident Janet Zeitman
retired from a career as an elementary
school teacher 20 years ago, something
was missing. Her own children were
grown, and she missed the social interac-
tion of her teaching days.
“I needed a way to get
out and be in the com-
munity, to see what other
people were doing,” Zeit-
man explains. She began
volunteering her time for a
variety of local groups, in-
cluding after-school tutor-
ing programs and Habitat
for Humanity. In 1992, she
and her husband drove to
Florida to help with Habi-
tat for Humanity’s rehousing effort fol-
lowing Hurricane Andrew; the experience
made Zeitman even more aware of the
positive impact she and other volunteers

There are so many wine-rating
systems, are some better than
others?
The 100-point system is the
easiest to use from a judge’s
standpoint, but it still all boils down to
subjectivity. You really have to know
who is doing the rating. A 90-point
rating from one source may be equiva-
lent to significantly less points from
another. It’s an attempt to impose
an objective system on a subjective
subject and it has many problems, as
one would expect. Point systems are
popular with marketers because they
appear to be an easy way to tout qual-
ity. This is good, because most high-
point-garnering wines are good wines,
so it works with all kinds of buyers.
However, in the end (in my opinion),
the only thing that really works is your
own palate. That’s why it’s great to get
out there to local wineries and wine
events to taste for yourself!

in Loomis. Other great places to stock up on the fall favorite are
Rickey Ranch Pumpkin Patch and Otow Orchard and Fruit Stand
in Granite Bay.
SELECTION AND STORAGE:When selecting a pumpkin, consider ones that are firm and
heavy for their size. A good pumpkin should have a dull finish,
be free of blemishes and include an intact stem. A two- to three-
pound pumpkin will feed about six guests in a fall-flavored side
dish. For cooking purposes, this smaller size features a tender,
flavorful flesh. Pumpkins should be stored unwrapped in a cool,
dry place with good air circulation. If a pumpkin is cut, the pieces
should be wrapped and refrigerated.

ALBUMSTHEN: Infinite Arms – Band of Horses
Almost pop, a little bit rock, a touch
of folk – it’s hard to describe Band of
Horses’ Infinite Arms. Sweeping melo-
dies will swirl in your head for days and
gorgeous vocal harmonies will bring a
smile to your face merely because of
their sweetness. Are we overselling? You
tell us.
NOW:The Carpenter – The Avett Brothers
The Avett Brothers are the perfect com-
pliments to the ghouls and goblins on
the loose this October. Their seventh
studio album, The Carpenter returns to
the trademark simplicity of 2009’s I and
Love and You, but tracks like “Paul New-
man Vs. The Demons” show they haven’t
forgotten how to get loud.
FLickS WiTH STyLE – Killing Them Softly

DVDsTHEN: Carnival of Souls
Made in 1962 for $33,000, Carnival of Souls
is a must for fans of Lynch and Romero, or
horror in general. With its unique score
and unsettling sound and visual design,
Carnival of Souls is more of a stylistic hor-
ror movie than blood and guts (there isn’t
any); a curiously unsettling piece of film-
making for this holiday month.
NOW: The Cabin in the Woods
From the mind of Buffy/Firefly genius
Joss Whedon, this flick starts out as a
paint-by-numbers “teens go camping”
horror story. You’ll think you’ve seen the
movie before, right up until the moment
when…(ha!), like we’d really spoil what’s
in store for you. All we can say is that it’s
awesome, and a mandatory Halloween
viewing. •
BOOkSTHEN: The Haunting of Hill House by Shirley
Jackson
Alongside Henry James’ The Turn of the
Screw, Shirley Jackson’s 1959 The Haunt-
ing of Hill House is a literary horror clas-
sic. Popular enough to be twice made
into a movie (1963 and 1999), nothing
replaces the slow, unfolding psychologi-
cal terror of reading Jackson’s original
masterpiece.
NOW: Breed by chase Novak
Chase Novak is the pseudonym for Na-
tional Book Award-winner Scott Spencer
(A Ship Made of Paper, Endless Love). It’s
clear why a name change was in order –
Breed is not for the faint of heart. Simply
put, a gruesome tale of fertility treat-
ment, Breed has already been praised
by the likes of Stephen King and is a
Halloween must.

Internationally known artist Maija Pee-
ples-Bright has a deep passion for all
kinds of art, animals, nature, color and
most of all, having fun. In The Spirit of
Woofdom – a documentary telling the
story of Peeples-Bright’s life and art –
each of these elements are intertwined
and celebrated in magnificent fashion.
Playful and colorful animals, or “beast-
ies” as she refers to them, populate all of
her pieces, illustrating the joy in life and
art. Animals of the “woof world” have
been a part of Peeples-Bright’s portfolio
since the ‘60s and continue to appear
in her work. Her 2005 series of mixed-
media paintings and ceramic figures
features her favorite historical figures
as “woof heroes.” “George and Martha
Woofington,” “Chief Sitting Woof,” and
others are depicted with animals Pee-
ples-Bright feels match their personality
strengths.
“I love animals,” Peeples-Bright says.
A love she expresses by featuring all
types of animal images in her paintings
and ceramic art. She describes her work
as “a touch of familiar, a touch of fantasy,
and a touch of fun.”
A native of the northern European
country of Latvia, Peeples-Bright fled
from a Russian invasion with her fam-
ily into Germany in 1945. After spend-
ing time in refugee camps, the family
eventually made their way to the U.S.
by obtaining a sponsor – an Orangev-
ale gentleman farmer. Peeples-Bright,
along with her mother and father,
worked on the farm for a year to pay
the debt. They thrived here in northern
California and decided to make the area
their new home.
Even though Peeples-Bright’s family
wanted her to pursue a career in math-
ematics as her father had, art became
her life’s path. She attended UC Davis
and first enrolled in the mathematics Ph

With encouragement and guidance from
UC Davis’ art professors, such as Wayne
Thiebaud and William T. Wiley, her unique
talent flourished. “Mathematics helped
as a logical thinking tool,” Peeples-Bright
explains. “However, art was the most
wonderful thing I ever experienced, so I
changed my major.”
After visiting Peeples-Bright at her
new home and huge Rocklin studio, it’s
clear that her artistic passion has not wa-
vered. And inside her haven, it’s not only
her own art, but a myriad of works by
others that shows just how much she is
inspired by creativity. Art is everywhere –
nearly every inch of wall space and other
surfaces are filled with wonderful pieces;
even Peeples-Bright herself is covered.
The day I visited she wore a blouse and
shoes covered in illustrations of fantastic
and colorful animals, which she herself
painted on the fabrics. “Art should be
everywhere,” Peeples-Bright says. “Art,
like music, should touch your soul.”
Her work has been on display at lo-
cal museums, such as Roseville’s Blue
Line Gallery, and is on permanent display
both nationally and internationally at sev-
eral museums including Sacramento’s
Crocker Art Museum. In addition, her art
is featured in many permanent public and
private collections around the world.
Peeples-Bright is currently busy at
work on her new series of night scenes
featuring the intriguing animals that
come out after dark; the first of Noc-
turnes is a depiction of an aye-aye lemur
(a native of Madagascar) at Yosemite’s

isn’t filing the applications; rather, it’s
waiting for the admissions decisions.
“You might notice you and your stu-
dent are fighting way more than usual,”
McGuire explains. “This is normal. As
parents, we want to keep our babies
with us, while our seniors are seeing the
light at the end of the tunnel of child-
hood. It’s a transition. Be gentle with
each other.” •
3. AFTER APPLYING, CHECK YOUR EMAIL AND WRITE DOWN PASSWORDS!“It’s incredible how often I see really
bright, college-bound students who are
puzzled because they haven’t heard
back from a school to which they’ve
applied,” says Kara McGuire, head
counselor at Casa Roble High School
in Orangevale. “Nine times out of 10,
they aren’t checking their emails or Web
portals.” Fisher concurs. “Most (if not
all) communication from universities
will be through email.” Check it! And
while we’re on the subject of email, we
suggest using a simple, professional
email address. You’re applying to col-
lege; time to retire the cutesy one you
made back in fourth grade.
FOR PARENTS4. KEEP YOUR KID ORGANIZEDPutting deadlines on a family calendar
is helpful, as well as a special file folder
with all college-related paperwork.
Fisher says, “Thousands of students per
year have their applications withdrawn
from consideration for not meeting
deadlines, such as sending in their SAT/
ACT scores or their transcripts on time.”
Offenstein agrees. “I don’t know how
many times I called to have the receipt of
something confirmed. To think if I didn’t
follow-up and didn’t know I was missing
something – well, let’s not go there.”
5. PROVIDE EMOTIONAL SUPPORTThis might seem counter-intuitive. Isn’t
it YOU who needs support with the
empty-nest syndrome approaching?
Yes. But for now, the most stressful time
Essays, applications and dead-
lines, oh my! It’s October, which
means college application sea-
son is already underway. As the class of
2013 slugs through personal statement
essay revisions, while buried under a
mountain of SAT vocabulary flashcards,
we’d like to offer a few words to the wise.
We’ve consulted the experts and com-
piled a list of tips to help your family
navigate the often-murky waters of the
college admissions process, in hopes of
providing some stress-reduction along
the way.
FOR STUDENTS1. DON’T PROCRASTINATEThe California State University appli-
cation opened October 1, and the Uni-
versity of California online application
opens November 1. “Last year during
this time, I set alarms on my cell phone to
give myself a schedule of when I should
have certain parts of my application
done. That gave me enough time to
double-check all parts before submit-
ting my apps,” Joshua Offenstein, Sac-
ramento State freshman, says. Time
management is key. Start today.
2. APPLY BROADLYJoe Fisher, admissions and outreach
counselor at Sacramento State, says,
“I like to recommend students apply
to their dream school, an attainable
choice, and a fallback. You never know
how competitive a campus will be from
year to year.” If the $40-$65 price tag
per application is making you cringe,
check out porcelina.net/freeapps for

that don’t charge application fees under
certain circumstances.

their stress (important because young
kids posses a limited vocabulary and

the subtleties of complex emotions they
feel). At Franny’s House kids might be
encouraged to “stomp” on their “icky”
feelings or pinpoint them through other
forms of active moving. Then, “sooth-

of programs and services.
Mrs. Chim’s Class – entertaining yet

– tackles hot-button social issues like
racism and intolerance, while Project
Me – a peer-run project by teens for
teens – generates a positive social cul-
ture that helps to temper the power
of common negative influences. The
volunteer Youth Advisory Committee,
led by youth directors and comprised
of middle- and high-school students,

to a 24-hour support hotline as well as
to Sacramento County Court-approved
parenting and co-parenting courses.
And everyone benefits from the
organization’s interactive bullying edu-
cation and advocacy program. Its strong
network of resources includes Bully
Busters, which teaches kids to identify
harassing behaviors in order for them to
sidestep a potential situation in which
they might be targeted and tormented.
Related seminars discussing social hier-

are also conducted. When necessary, a
bullying advocate is assigned to discuss

children, while serving as a liaison for

techniques to better manage the stress,
establish structure, reset boundaries
and rebuild the parent-child trust bond.
Unique to Franny’s House is the non-

a child’s underlying issues – such as
attention seeking behavior in an effort
to gain power – and stress-causing trig-
gers are rooted out and dealt with using
age-appropriate tactics. Why stress?
Because, Rodriguez recently explained
on Blog Talk Radio’s Army of Angels,
the organization has identified stress as
“…the first barrier to accessing a health-
ier emotional mindset.” “Therefore,” she
elaborates, “We work with our children,
and empower them to manage their
stress first and then begin to rebuild
some of those broken relationships and
personal boundaries.”
This happens methodically, initially
by tapping into a child’s natural physical-

Reflecting a now sadly familiar

Alex, suffered extreme emotion-
al distress from living in a violent house-

their parents’ fractious divorce – one

various government non-profit agen-

from all parties, the girls continued to
bear severe anxiety resulting from their
experience – the brunt of its toll pain-
fully obvious to their deeply concerned,
and extremely determined mother, Jen-

what had happened –
how the normal dosage
was one maximum and I
took three. “That’s a lot...
you have someone there
to watch you right?”
they asked. “Yes, why?”
I replied. “Because al-
though it’s not techni-
cally an overdose, if you
go to sleep during the
peak period, you could
stop breathing.”
Let me cut to the
chase. I prayed a lot, and
physically I was fine. Un-
fortunately, it served as
a massive trigger to my
panic disorder, which
raged for an hour and a
half; I couldn’t even fo-
cus to have a conversa-
tion. In fact, I could very
well chalk up that night
to my worst in recent
memory.
So, what was good
about it? Well , even
though my wife was
initially more tired than
I was, she stayed up to
keep me safe and help me through
the panic attack – playing games of
Uno with me and challenging me to
head-to-head solitaire matches on our
iPhones. She prayed for me. She tried
to talk to me. She demonstrated more
unselfish love through that situation
than she would’ve been able to do in an
entire month of things going great. My
pain allowed her love to shine.
I woke up the next morning rather
groggy to the face of my youngest girl
staring at me with a sweet smile. “Good
morning, Daddy,” she said. I mumbled,
“Good morning,” but before I could roll
over to get back to sleep, she sweetly
added, “What did we learn last night?
To read the label.” •

with my wife and girls from a long day
of boating in the hot sun. I had water-
skied for the first time this season and
could anticipate all the muscles that
would soon start to ache. I felt drained
and tired, so I took three-anticipatory
Ibuprofen – already on the counter –
and headed to bed at the early time
of 9 p.m.
As I crawled in, next to my dog-tired
wife, she asked me a peculiar question:
“Why did you just take sleeping pills?”
“I didn’t. I took Ibuprofen, the blue
gel caps.”
“The ones on the counter?”
“Yeah.”
“Honey, those were extra-strength
sleeping pills. They had spilled out in
the drawer, and I had gathered them
up and put them on the counter to put
back in the bottle tomorrow morning.”
Needless to say, I was concerned
and called Poison Control. I told them
As a pastor, I see people experi-
ence all types of hardships. I
see pain on just about every
level. At the same time, however, I see
the amazing way adversity and pain
bring out love from those around us. I
can’t recount how many funerals I’ve
seen that lead to reconciliation of an
estranged family, or the number of en-
couraging cards – packed with pounds
of love – I’ve been privy to for people
in the hospital; I don’t even pretend to
know the power-packed emotions a
one-on-one visit with someone wres-
tling through life brings.
I’m certainly not saying bad times
are good. In fact, they are called bad
times because they are, well, bad. What
I’m saying is that along with the bad, an
opportunity arises for love to fill the gap
and show us something we didn’t really
know, or perhaps didn’t feel, before.

“Don’t Stop Believing”...That has been my motto for the past two years.
Two years ago I was given two weeks to live. Look-ing back I can see with clarity that beating cancer has helped define the person I am today. Am I a hero? Actu-ally as I see it, I believe the true Heroes are my family, my friends, my team at Dental Designs and my patients. Without faith, staying positive, everyone’s love, support and prayers I would not be here today.
Another true hero in my life and whom I would like to take this opportunity to thank publicly is my sister Lama. She truly gave me the gift of “LIFE”. She gra-ciously donated her bone marrow to me.
I want to express my sincere gratitude for all of the unconditional love and support I received and continue to receive from so many of you. I promise to continue supporting the community, bringing hope to the needy, and assuring everyone that ANYTHING is possible if you BELIEVE.
Every day I wake-up thankful and filled with grati-tude. To be able to see the sun, to hug my wife and kids, and to enjoy seeing each one of you who has kept me in your prayers.
“You should make every day count and appreciate every moment for you may never be able to experience it again, you can make your life anything you wish.”
We consider it a Great Honor to be voted the #1 dental office in Roseville, Rocklin & Granite Bay for the 4th year in a row. Our objective has always been to exceed our patients’ expectations. Our Greatest complement has been to see first -hand how we influence the lives of people. Our entire team at Dental Designs is driven to Excellence and committed to our patients.
Both doctors have incredibly high standards and hold themselves accountable to those standards. The entire team is committed to their work and value life-long learning because we believe in providing quality dental care rather than give into insurance companies. We will NEVER compromise. Our intense passion for our profession and unyielding enthusiasm for indulg-ing our patients is one of the reasons we feel our patients believe and trust in us.
We always go the extra mile to ensure that our knowledge of dentistry is exceptional. Our entire team has completed extensive hours of post-graduate train-ing, including several courses at the prestigious Las Vegas Institute for Advanced Dental Studies.
We truly believe that everyone should have:The Smile They Desire, The Dentistry They Deserve!

NRS Luxury Estates is a premier boutique and specialty real estate firm catering to the demands of the luxury estates marketplace. The company, based in Placer County, not just excels in a down market, but are moving high-end residential homes with multimillion dollar price tags. Real estate broker Nick Sadek and his partner Dina Sadek are renowned for selling Eddie Murphy’s Granite Bay mansion and currently have over $40,000,000 in listings and pending inventory of luxury estates. more important to him is working freely and synergistically with just the right kind of client. "I like to inverview my clients," he notes. "I don't take just anyone. I want someone who will work with me - someone willing to be understanding and flexible, espe-cially in a down market."
Nick’s 20 years in business have also enabled him to refine his approach working with high-end clients in the housing market. Extensive personal networking and Internet marketing are also part of his pattern of success. He develops targeted marketing ideas for projects of special interest, providing him success in substantial deals that often close more quickly than the market average.

You never get a second
chance to make a first
impression, but within
seconds of entering Zócalo, I
was smitten. Floor to ceiling, the
4,500-square-foot airy space,
fashioned by designer Ernesto
Cruz, is brimming with authen-
tic and artistic furnishings, from seven-foot
hand-carved columns to chandeliers remi-
niscent of agave plants. Black and white
fixtures, brick walls and splashes of scarlet
are punctuated by lush palm trees and
artwork created by Cruz; the overall vibe
is contemporary yet comfortable.
On a recent visit, the balmy autumn
air beckoned me to dine on the spacious
outdoor patio. As mariachi music set the
mood, a blackberry margarita and warm,
just-fried chips served alongside salsa and
creamy black bean dip piqued my palate
for what was to come.
Among the enticing entrée options,
which include everything from chile rel-
lenos and sopas to empanadas and en-
saladas, I enjoyed the Cochinita Pibil and
Mole Enchiladas.
Served three up and stuffed with
cheese and braised chicken, then topped
with a 26-ingredient (toasted nuts, choco-
late, chile and dried fruits, to name a few)
mole sauce and zigzag of crema, the en-
chiladas were a savory circus of tastes
and textures.

succulent and slightly sweet
with subtle hints of woodsy
smoke. When assembled with
the homemade corn tortillas
and accompanying pickled red
onions and habanero salsa, my
taste buds raced into overdrive. Family-
style sides of cilantro lime rice and black
beans were spot-on.
For dessert, the Tres Leche Cake is
worth dipping your spoon into. Served
in a Mason jar, the dense vanilla cake
soaked in “three milks” and garnished
with whipped cream and strawberries
was sinfully satisfying.
It’s no wonder everyone’s going loco
for Zócalo – the regional Mexican cuisine,
tequila selection and well-versed wait staff
are in a league of their own. •

2011 MASON SAUVIGNON BLANCRandy Mason has been producing wine for more than 30 years (the first
Mason wine was produced in 1993) and is known in the industry as a pio-
neer for producing some of the best California Sauvignon Blancs on the
market. It was Mason’s vision to produce a high-quality wine and make it
available at a fair market price. The fruit for this year’s Sauvignon Blanc
came solely from a vineyard called Blockhouse – located in Yountville –
which in itself is special and unusual, since typically grapes for Sauvignon
Blancs at this price point (approximately $16 bottle) come from various
sources. The vineyard is located at the heart of the valley’s floor, which
enjoys cool evenings and warm days, making for excellent grapes.
2011 Mason Sauvignon Blanc embodies a very elegant style with
amazing flavors of grapefruit, melon and fresh-cut grass. Fermented in
100-percent stainless steel tanks, it has a very distinctive nose, and over-
all is a true Napa-style Sauvignon Blanc that’s heralded for its varietal
trueness and perfect balance. I like to enjoy this wine with an appetizer
before dinner; it even goes well with hummus! •— Richard Righton

Morocco: A Culinary Journey
with Recipes from the Spice-
Scented Markets of Marrakech to
the Date-Filled Oasis of Zagora
by Jeff Koehler
(Chronicle Books, 2012, $29.95)
Like Grilled Spicy Kefta Brochettes, these
are a favorite throughout Morocco, re-
ferred to as snacks in street stalls and in
simple cafes. They’re inexpensive, fla-
vorful and quick to prepare. The chicken
takes on a lovely golden hue from the
cumin and sweet paprika. Calculate
about four brochettes per person as part
of a meal, accompanied by a few salads
and plenty of bread.
2 heaping tbsp. finely chopped fresh •
cilantro
2 tsp. ground cumin•
1 tsp. sweet paprika•
1/2 tsp. cayenne pepper (optional)•
Salt and freshly ground black pepper•
6 tbsp. olive oil•
4 boneless chicken breasts (about 2 •
lb.) cut into 3/4-to 1-inch cubes
In a large mixing bowl, add the cilan-
tro, cumin, paprika and cayenne pep-
per. Generously season with salt and
pepper. Moisten with the oil and blend
well. Add the chicken and turn to coat.
Cover, refrigerate and marinate for
1 hour, turning occasionally.
Prepare skewers with 6-8
cubes of chicken on each. The
pieces should be just touch-
ing, not squashed tightly to-
gether.
If using a grill pan, skillet
or griddle, heat over medium-
high heat. If using a barbecue,
prepare a fire and heat until
the coals are glowing. If using a
broiler, preheat the broiler.
Cook the brochettes, nudg-
ing them from time to time with
the help of a spatula in order
to cook evenly on all sides, un-
til the meat is cooked through
and firm to touch, 4-5 minutes.
Serve hot. Makes about 16 bro-
chettes; serves 4. Co

If you think the nine cities encompassing
the Palm Springs area would be a great
retirement destination, well, you’d be
right…and you’d also be wrong. The year-
round sunshine, relatively slower-paced
lifestyle and brutally hot summers (luck-
ily it’s a dry heat!) does make the area
– collectively known as the Coachella Val-
ley – an attractive destination for retiring
snowbirds. But since there’s no shortage
of misters, pools and air conditioning,
don’t let the heat keep you from a week-
end getaway. Now through May, when the
weather is spectacular, is the perfect time
of year to indulge in some of the fabulous
things to see and do – at a fraction of the
high-season rates.
EXPERIENCEThere are 112 golf courses, countless hik-
ing trails and excellent resorts, spas and
restaurants at your fingertips. One not-
to-miss event for tennis lovers is the BNP
Paribas Open – held every March in Indian
Wells and known in tennis circles as “the
fifth major,” as it gathers the world’s top
professional players. The Tennis Garden
at Indian Wells boasts the second larg-
est tennis stadium in the world and is
surrounded by beautifully landscaped
grounds. In March 2012, attendance
topped 370,000 for the two-week com-
bined ATP and WTP event. Tickets are on
sale now for the 2013 tournament, to be
held March 4-17.
If tennis isn’t your thing, music may be.
Coachella Valley Music and Arts Festival,
held every April, is the go-to music festi-
val. It’s like an annual Woodstock for the
millennial generation, but less muddy!
UNWINDIf your escape to the valley is about indul-
gence, then you’ll have no trouble finding
a spa to suit your needs. After a day on the
links or hardcore shopping in the El Paseo
Shopping District, try the Aqua Well mas-
sage at the Miramonte Resort & Spa in In-
dian Wells, where you float weightlessly in
a pool heated to your body temperature
while your muscles are rhythmically mas-
saged; the unique treatment leaves you
relaxed and almost spiritually calm.
Another fantastic venue is La Quinta
Resort & Club, also in Indian Wells. This
Waldorf Astoria property, originally built
in 1926, covers 45 lushly manicured acres
at the foot of the Santa Rosa Mountains.

rious experiences available. The spa’s
acclaimed HydraFacial is a new skin reju-
venation system that attracts both movie
stars and locals to experience skin care on
a whole new level.
Even though Le Parker Méridien’s
spa, PSYC (Palm Springs Yacht Club) has
no body of water in which to dock your
yacht, PSYC believes in the country club
experience, which – according to their
Web site – includes mixed doubles, a long
steam and a stiff cocktail. Difficult to ar-
gue otherwise!
FEASTMost resorts offer several dining options,
but one not to miss is Tinto at The Saguaro
Palm Springs, a wine bar and restaurant
from Iron Chef Jose Garces, featuring a
modern take on tapas from Spain’s Basque
region. Fun, vibrant and delicious!
The entire valley offers so many op-
portunities that you have to go and expe-
rience it for yourself. Oh, and if you visit in
the winter, don’t forget to pack your skis…
seriously! •

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?
The Bath Boutique is a specialty online bath and body store where you can find a
unique selection of luxurious bath products and gifts. The product lines we carry
focus on natural ingredients, are not mass-produced, and aren’t available in ordinary
bath and body stores. We were always interested in aromatherapy and enjoyed
handmade soaps, so the concept of the boutique is based on that. We wanted to
give women an easy way to pamper themselves and enjoy “life’s little luxuries.”
What life accomplishments are you most proud of?
Starting our business. We spent our entire careers in corporate positions but always
dreamed of having a business of our own. We finally took the leap and are so happy
we did!
Where do you go when the going gets tough?
The bath of course! It’s a great place to escape for a few minutes. The combination
of delightful scents and warm water can soothe any stress.
What’s your hidden talent?
Although we don’t sell our own bath product line (yet), we make handmade bath soaps
and bath bombs at home in our kitchen. It’s a fun and creative hobby.
What’s your biggest job perk?
We love all the fun, unique products we carry, and getting to use them everyday is a great
perk! Also, we have so much fun going to events and meeting new people.
What’s your favorite place to eat out locally?
La Provence Restaurant & Terrace.
And finally, customer service is…?
Our core focus. We know customers are a company’s biggest asset and want to create
a wonderful experience for them by sharing really great products that make them feel
pampered and indulged!

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?
My wife, Stephanie, and I developed our winery.
What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience?
Working on my uncle’s dairy farm. I learned farming is a lifestyle, not just a job.
how are you involved with both the community and your customer?
We have an active wine club and participate in community events. In addition, I serve on the
Placer County Agriculture Commission and we’re members of various trade associations.
Why is your staff the best in the business?
We often hear we’re a fun place to visit, and customers love our service.
What life accomplishments are you most proud of?
Planning, developing and establishing a successful winery business.
Who is your role model in business or in life, and why?
My uncle – he farmed his whole life and taught me the value of stewardship of the
land.
Where do you go when the going gets tough?
Stephanie and I enjoy sailing and golfing.
What’s your biggest job perk?
Seeing customers truly enjoying our wine – the fruits of our labor.
What’s your favorite place to eat out locally?
The Monkey Cat in Auburn – they have great food and a friendly staff.
Where do you and your family go locally to have fun?
Sailing on Scotts Flat Lake off Highway 20 and golfing at Auburn Valley Golf Club.
What’s your favorite childhood memory?
Working on my uncle’s farm – driving the tractor and working with the animals.
And finally, customer service is…?
Providing award-winning wine in a fun, friendly atmosphere.

Describe your business. Did you find it, or did it find you?
My passion for photography started in third grade when a school project required
us to make a handmade box camera. As an older sibling and cousin, I used to have
“photo shoots” with my younger family members and even the dogs – anyone who
would sit still long enough. The anticipation of having my 35mm film developed was
almost like waiting for Christmas morning. While life took me on another adven-
ture with my husband and three kids, it came full circle on my 33rd birthday when
my husband bought me my first SLR camera: a Canon Rebel XS. That Canon took
me on a 365-day photo adventure, which rekindled my passion for photography.
Capturing great photos feels like the easy part for me; the challenging part is the
editing, color enhancements and sharpening which happens after the photo is
taken. That challenge is what keeps me working hard to produce the best possible
product for my clients.
What life accomplishments are you most proud of?
My children, my business, and most recently being voted “Best Photographer” in Placer
Herald’s “Best of the Best.”
What’s your biggest job perk?
Being able to share and capture special moments with my clients.
What’s your favorite place to eat out locally?
Don Quixote for sure! Their chile verde reminds me of my dad and childhood.
What’s your favorite local event that you go to?
Celebrate America – we love the Fourth of July and our community.
What’s your favorite local business other than your own?
Icing on the Cupcake – they make my family (and me) happy.
And finally, customer service is…?
What keeps you in business; horrible customer service could break you.
Answers by Fred Hymans
Describe your business.
Our group of financial professionals provides comprehensive financial planning, invest-
ment management, retirement planning, tax preparation, accounting, bookkeeping and
payroll services to individuals and small businesses in South Placer and Sacramento
Counties. We formed the business as a strategic decision to combine our talents and
experience to best help our clients.
What was the first job you ever had, and what did you learn from the experience?
Right out of college I worked as an account executive in the group sales department
at Marriott’s Great America (now California’s Great America) theme park in Santa
Clara. It was a fantastic job because I was able to learn about working in a sales
environment with executives from some of the top companies all over northern
California. Plus, I could ride roller coasters during my lunch break!
how are you involved with both the community and your customer?
I enjoy volunteer work and am heavily involved in several nonprofits, including
Sons of Norway, a fraternal benefits organization. I am also on the board of my
church and have served as president of the Kiwanis Club.
if you could be any other profession, what would it be?
Without a doubt I would be a teacher. As it is now, about 50 percent of what I
do is helping my clients understand the financial world. I think I would have been a
pretty good high school history or maybe math teacher. I love making kids think and
laugh; not necessarily in that order though.
And finally, customer service is…?
Listening to my clients’ needs, questions, goals and dreams and providing them with
choices and guidance that exceeds what they’ve seen or heard in the past. Then I keep
in touch with them – hopefully more frequently than they expect – and return phone
calls and emails within the same day. Did I mention listening?
Jesenia Bomgardner

And pounding of paws,
Jangled the stars hung in the night.
Then suddenly they grew quite quiet
And held still, not twitching a tail.
A loud knock on their door –
Then three knocks once more.
Was it a monster hunter, hot on their
trail?
No, it was something considerably less
scary.
To them, anyway – but not you or me.
Because every grown monster
Once was a youngster,
And these two were still little, you see.
The ruckus they made was disturbing
Their parents one floor below;
With the thuds and the laughing,
And the booms and the cackling,
It was ruining Dad’s favorite TV show.
Two monsters one night were talk-
ing
About the scariest way to scare,
How to fright and strike fear
In anyone near,
And cause people to leap from their
chairs.
“I like to start with a sneer,” said one.
Said the other, “I like to start with a
scowl.”
“I whip out my claws.”
“I snap with my jaws.”
And they agreed one always should
growl.
One monster stood up on his hind legs,
To show how he towered overhead.
Broad-shouldered and tall,
Green scales and all,
He was good at bringing the dread.
The other lurched forward on all fours,
And swatted the air with his tail.
Then he reared back and bellowed,
And spit something yellow,
That smelled putrid and rancid and stale.
The first beast then flicked out his long
tongue;
Like a towel it snapped through the
room.
Disgusting and slimy,
And a little bit grimy,
It left the walls all covered in goo.
The second narrowed his one eye,
Which sat like a jewel on his forehead.
Then focusing in,
That horrible lens
Shot lightning that blew up a bed.
While the smoke cleared away they cack-
led,
And rolled on the floor with delight.

monster mash A Spooktacular Poem
by Tom Mailey
So their momma came stomping up-
stairs.
It was she who rapped with such clout:
“KNOCK IT OFF!” she bellowed.
And to make them more mellow,
She threatened them with a time-out.
Well, that was enough for our two little
beasts,
Who sat smiling at the damage they’d
caused:
Goo on the door,
A shattered bed on the floor,
Pillows destroyed by their claws.
And they both knew they needed a
broom
Or maybe two; there was so much to
sweep.
But such destruction is tiring
To a small monster’s wiring,
So instead...
They fell fast asleep. •

Restylane can be used for lip enhancement in patients over 21 years and to add volume and fullness to the skin to correct moderate to severe facial wrinkles and folds, such as the lines from your nose to the corners of your mouth (nasolabial folds).
Important Safety Considerations for RestylaneRestylane should not be used by people with previous bad allergies, particularly to microorganisms known as gram-positive bacteria, or by people with serious allergies to drugs that have previously required in-hospital treatment. Restylane should not be used by people with bleeding disorders. Use of Restylane at the site of skin sores, pimples, rashes, hives, cysts, or infection should be postponed until healing is complete. In these instances, Restylane use could delay healing or make your skin problems worse. After treatment, you might have some swelling, redness, pain, bruising, or tenderness. These are typically mild in severity and normally last less than 7 days in nasolabial folds and less than 14 days in lips. Swelling
may be more likely in patients under 36 years, and bruising may be more likely in patients over 35 years. Rarely, the doctor may inject into a blood vessel, which can damage the skin. Although rare, red or swollen small bumps may occur. If you have had facial cold sores before, an injection can cause an outbreak. To avoid bruising and bleeding, you should not use Restylane if you have recently used drugs that thin your blood or prevent clotting. Restylane should not be used during pregnancy, when breastfeeding, or in patients under 18 years for nasolabial folds.
Treatment volume should be limited to 6.0 mL in wrinkles and folds, such as nasolabial folds, and limited to 1.5 mL per lip, as greater amounts significantly increase moderate and severe injection site reactions. The safety or effectiveness of treatment in areas other than nasolabial folds and lips has not been established in controlled clinical studies.
Restylane is available only through a licensed practitioner. Complete product and safety information is available at www.RestylaneUSA.com.
