What do you think we mean by the phrase The Student
Voice? It’s more than just listening to what you have to
say to make your time here the best it can be, it’s about
giving you the power and skills to bring the change
yourself.
This bit gives you the full run down on the many ways to get
involved, maybe you are looking to be a Rep, Ambassador or get
elected onto the Exec Committee, or maybe you just want to flag
something up in the five minutes before you’ve got to run for
your bus.
How would I
spend £10k
to improve
things?
Write on TV Had an idea that you want to feed back but
can’t wait till forum week? At North Road and
Lansdowne receptions the college have
installed screens for you to write on (touch
screen, no biros!) then when you hit send
your ideas get emailed directly to student
services. All ideas get read (keep it clean!)
The Exec Committee are a group of
current college students, who are elected
by other current students to make all the
major decisions for the students union,
and work with SU staff to make sure we
make your time at the college the best
possible.
So who are the Exec Committee, and how
do you get to be one? Well the SU run two
sets of nominations and elections
throughout the year. One at the start of
the year (September/October) to fill all
the officer posts for the coming year.
These are perfect ‘entry level’ posts to the
exec to really get a feel for what’s what.
The second set of nominations/ elections
run from February each year to find the
next student President and selected Vice
Presidents for the following college year.
Current Exec Members
Alicia Gomez—Student President
Jack Croker — VP Entertainments
Bruce MacDonald—VP Welfare
(See everyone’s pics on page two!)
At the time of printing we are getting
ready for our September officer elections,

So what does an ambassador do?
Good question. In a nutshell……
•Communicating with Student Reps You’ll be the main communicator
between reps and your curriculum area, the college and the Students’ Union
•You get to interview new
members of staff Get some top notch interview experience by seeing what it’s like on the other side of the desk! Your opinion on hiring counts!
•The face of the open Evenings As an ambassador you’ll be invited to help out at open evenings by meeting and greeting future students and their parents. A real boost for your communication skills!
•Mystery shopping You’ll get to anonymously test college services and report back to make sure they’re serving the students well! (Just don’t do it wearing you’re free student ambassador branded hoodie. Bit of a give away...)
Plus much much more than we can fit on one page. All we ask is that you can volunteer at least thirty hours of your time throughout the year.
Full details of the ambassador role and depending on the time of year (see right) an application form can be found on campus
from the SU or online via Bpcsu.com

Summer Big question
Student Ambassadors are a bit like the
Student Reps, but they don’t just
represent the class, they represent the
whole college. Plus they get to do a load
of other stuff as well!
Like the SU exec you can apply to be an
ambassador towards the end of the year if
you are coming back the following term,
so a perfect time to apply if you’ve been a
rep in your first year and you want to
progress, or at the start of the year if you
missed it at the end, or if you're new and
up for it!
There’s no election, once you’ve applied
you have an informal interview to see if
the post is for you then job done!
The ambassador programme is college
wide, and there is at least one
ambassador from each area, so you’ll
meet loads of different people!
Student Reps (one rep, plus a deputy) are
nominated by their class in September,
they represent their class for the whole
year!
In a nutshell, a rep’s job is to talk to their
class about everything that’s going on about
their course, all the good stuff plus the stuff
that could be improved upon!
They then report this back at the termly
student forum meetings (dates below)
DID YOU KNOW?
Student
Ambassadors
organise the
Feedback Conference
The forum meetings are always
attended by all reps from your curriculum
area, the head of your area and a member
of the college senior leadership team. They
then listen to what you have to say, and
make sure stuff gets done. Simple!
Full training is provided (see dates below)
and forum week info is given to your tutor
to let you know where you need to be, as
with the other stuff, you can find it all at
WWW.BPCSU.COM

Throughout the year, there are
loads of volunteering
opportunities from the SU for you to
get involved with, from day-long
conservation work on our
community days, to quick drop-in
‘Bite-Size’ volunteering sessions if
you’re pushed for time!
Duncan Cooper (Holton Lee):
We always enjoy having the students out
working with us. We get a lot more done with
their help and support and due to budget cuts
we really appreciate the volunteers.
Pete Thornton (JTYAF):
We have had quite a lot of dealings with BPC
students and I have always found them to engage really
well with charities and local causes. We have worked with
them on wonderful fundraisers and at the College's
volunteering fayre. The students were showing a great
amount of Interest and support

BPCSU’s volunteering team
are proud to be involved with
The National Citizen Service,
open to anyone aged 15-17.
The aim of NCS is to provide a
once-in-a-lifetime opportunity
to build skills for life and the
workplace, while facing
different challenges and
making friends outside of your
class.
Participants have the chance
to get involved with outdoor
adventure, volunteering and
community integration as
they try their hand at water
sports and organising a local
community project to benefit
those around them.
We run programmes across all
seasons, but to give an exam-
ple, here is how our summer
programme works:
Week One, we go away for a
week for our first
residential. In the summer of
2014, we stayed in Swanage
where we engaged in
adrenaline-fuelled water sports
and teambuilding.
Week Two, this is where we
focus on getting to know the
local community. In the
summer of 2014, we stayed
near Corfe Castle where we
met local charities,
helped train guide dogs
and worked with the local
fire services. Not only that,
we learnt many new skills
such as first aid, Zumba and
orienteering.
Week Three is when all our
teams start to plan what
project they will deliver
locally. We go out into
the public and hear from
guest speakers and local
charities to inspire
everyone to get started -
There is publicity, fundraising,
marketing and more to
organise!
Week Four, Project week! This
week all teams deliver the
project. There have been
many different things in the
past but the end game is
totally up to you! At the end
everyone who takes part
gets to attend our
graduation ceremony and
receive a certificate signed
by the Prime Minister.
It all Starts at Yes!
