MST is a fully professional theater with three programs: MainStage, Theater for Youth, and Education Department. Main Street Theater is a member of Theatre Communications Group (TCG), the national service organization for not-for-profit theaters, of Theatre for Young Audiences/USA ( formerly ASSITEJ), the world theatre network of theatre for children and young people, and a founding member of Houston Arts Partners. Our MainStage operates under Actors’ Equity Association Small Professional Theater contract. Main Street Theater is funded in part by a grant from the Texas Commission on the Arts.

Crispin Whittell was born in Kenya and studied English Literature at Cambridge University. He has written and directed numerous plays, including Villa America (Williamstown Theatre Festival), Clever Dick (Hampstead Theatre), Happy Valley (Liverpool Everyman), Killing Her (Old Red Lion), Killing Him (Pleasance, Edinburgh) and his adaptation of Martin Amis’s novel Success (Pleasance, Edinburgh) which was shortlisted for The Guardian Award. Other plays/adaptations include: The Primrose Path (Guthrie Theater), A Christmas Carol (Guthrie Theater), Party Tricks (Nottingham Playhouse) and Darwin in Malibu, which was nominated for a TMA Award for Best

New Play. He translated and directed Rafael Spregelburd’s play Stupidity (“La Estupidez”) for the National Theatre Studio in London. Other directing credits include: the world premieres of Adam Rapp’s The Purple Lights of Joppa Illinois and Dipika Guha’s Yoga Play (both South Coast Rep), Dissonance (Falcon Theatre) and Danny Boy (Etcetera Theatre). He is currently writing a new 6-part TV Cold War thriller for Turbine Studios in the UK and turning a novella by Turgenev into a screenplay. After ten years in Los Angeles, he now lives on the edge of Dartmoor in South West England surrounded by his wife, two children, a goldendoodle called Florence, her puppy Claude, and about a million sheep.
