How to use IEC61850 for time-critical information ex-changeThereareseveralautomatedfunctionsinthesubstationautomationsystem,whichrequireatime-criticalexchangeofinformationbetweenfunctionslocatedwithinthesamebayorindifferentbays.

Generic Object Oriented Substation Event Fortheexchangeofthistypeof(binary)informationviaserialcommunication,IEC61850introducesaspecificinformationexchangeservicecalledGOOSE(GenericObjectOrientedSubstationEvent)basedonthepublisher-subscriberconcept.ThecontentofaGOOSEmessageisdefinedwithadataset.TheGOOSEmessageissentasamulticastmessageviathecommunicationnetwork.Thismeansthatvariousdevicescanreceivethemessageandretrievetherequiredinformationfromit.Thecommunicationserviceisnotconfirmed;instead,themessageisrepeatedseveraltimes.

Station-wide interlockingAtypicalexampleistheexchangeofinformationbetweenlo-gicaldevicesforstationinterlocking.EachIEDdistributestherequiredswitchpositionsviaGOOSEtelegramviathestationbusandalsoreceivesswitchpositionsfromotherfeeders.Therefore,eachIEDhasaccesstoalltheinformationneededtoverifythestation-wideinterlockingconditions.
