It's almost time for springvacation and the annual invasion of Ft .Lauderdale beach . Christ! I'm 25 already andwhere have I been spendin' my weekend nites ?Ft . Lauderdale strip! The prospects for thenext two months don't look bright . MaybeI've been hanging around bars for too long.I've become some sort of lounge lizard(notice how I manage to tie in all the name sof these hip bands) .

What's happening with our scene ?After a slow period over the past*.3 monthsthings may be on the upswing again. At thetime of writing this the Eat are scheduledto play next weekend at a new club on thestrip . What this all means is that bands atleast for the temporary moment eould hav ea regular place to play . I do wish to emph-asis temporary however . Nothing's eve rreally permanent here . . . is it? Venue sopen and close, change management, alte rtheir booking policies . . . . Ultimetly themain problem is that none of the peoplerunning the clubs have any concept of th escene and what the fans want . Until eneof us (a fan) gets in that position ofpower I see little hope for our club scene .

As dismal as the. club scene mayappear the future for South Florida vinylhas never looked better . Upcoming thi syear : Charlie Pickett Live LP (the tape ssound hot!), the Florida compilation LPan Essentials EP (it's about time guys! ,an LP by the Eat, and possibly somethingfrom Crucial Truth (Throbs) on Bad Brainsrecords . Wow! Sounds too good to be truedoesn't it? This could be what we've beenwaiting for .

I guess I better wind things up .Sorry that there's not a whole lot of localstuff this issue . There Will be much mere ,next time I promise . Also I wish to than kall of our friendly advertisers who havestuck with us . They all deserve yoursupport and please make sure you tell themwhere you found out about their place from .Well that's about it . . . see ya in 2 months .

P .S . Last minute news : the Stick Figure sfrom Tampa have broken up . I'm really sorryt• hear it but I'm counting on at leas ttwo or three new bands to come out of this .

BrainOn January 9th of the New Year something unusual happened i nTampa . On that date a fairly well known group from England was schedule dto play . . . this in itself was not unusual . . . there had been others . . . . butoutside of a few exceptions those groups never played . . . always at thelast moment something happened and once again the Tampa faithful weredenied. This time was different though because Brian Brain was scheduled t oplay and they did indeed play on that night . It was a small miracle tha tthey did though . Things messed up on this end . According to the group them -selves Blitz Productions over- extended themselves on their previou sevent and Brian Brain was cancelled . It was up to the group on their ownto spend over $350 to rent a hall and a P .A . and basically book themselvesinto Tampa.The location for this event was the FCA, a private clubdevoted to the perpetuation of the Confederacy it is rumoured. The back-drop to the stage is a confederate flag. The first group to play wa sOperation Bellbottom, a group who proclaim . . . "not just for immigrants" .Many of their vocals reflect this as they are either in a foreign lang-uage or sound like they are . The emphasis is on RHYTHM with Robert onbass and Nadim (a British Pakistani) on drums . Tony dances franticall yon stage in a manner that brings to mind Hollywood movies set in th e

Mediterranian . This group is too good for Florida and will probably soonmove to New York where their music will be at home and appreciated .After O .B ., Your Relatives played, a catchy name cause everyone like theirrelatives afterall . They are a new group and this was their second publi cappearance . Nonetheless they had a sound that was encouraging for a grou pso new .

Finally at about 1 :30 Brian Brain came on stage . Some of theaudience may have been puzzled because there was no drum kit . This is be ..cause the drums, played by Martin Atkins, are on tape . Martin is also th evocalist and uses the tape to free himself to concentrate on vocals . Asthe group goes on stage the tape begins . You are just getting excite dwhen you realize . . . God! The sound is SHIT! . . . the vocals are barelyaudible . "Working Classes" is a good song and Martin Atkins moves excitedl yabout the stage . The band later confessed to me that they get somewhatambarrasaad 'cause some people believe that it's more than the drums tha tare on tape . This sound was too bad to be on tape . Each song was almost

undescernable from the previous*+ l9l r .-crowd didn't seem to care though . . .this was the big event . . . the one that didn't cancel . "Flies" came aboutmid set . . . probably the groups next single . Martin Atkins waived hisfingers around and looked sinister like a character from Aristophanes 'play. For some reason maybe it was just the beer . . . the sound seemed toclear for their last two songs, 'Nature" and their hit 'Jive Jive" . Thes etwo were great . Then the tape ended . After a short break which feature dpre- recorded hand clapping the group returned to play "Flies" and 'Jiv eJive' . Again the tape ended and with it the ooncert . Despite the soundproblems the group reached the crowd with it's enthusiasm and ability toproceed unflinchingly.

The next day I visited the group at their room in the Day' sInn. Present were Pete Jones who plays bass, Bobby Surgeoner who play slead guitar, John Madden who produces their music and is a roadie andMartin Atkins the drummer/vocalist . The group has taken great pains not t olive off Martin Atkin's association with PIL (Editor's note : Well howcome he's wearing a PIL T shirt on the record then?) . Atkins claimsthat their record and performance contracts have provisions prohibitingany mention of a connection to PIL . Martin has dozens of tales of ho wpeople will be nice to him in order to get a chance to talk to Johnnyor Keith . Even Pete tells of people asking if Martin ever mentioned wha tJohnny thought of some topic . Brian Brain's first single was recorde d

Thegroup,'s early work was done on borrowed studio time when John Madden wh owas working with Cliff Richard let the boys in after hours . Before thatJones and Atkins used to play in a small band together called the Hits .

The Brain is currently in the midst of a nation wide tou rwhich started in mid December in New York . This is their second American (5)

tour . They say that they don't play much in England . . . "England is a pi tto play in . ." "It's flavor of the week" where people like what they shoul dlike . They want to move to New York or Boston . 'New York would be nicebut I wouldn't want to get in with Keith, Johnny, and Jeanette' say sAtkins, who claims that Johnny is fat and a waste . The main thing tha tkeeps them in England is Secret , their record company which has bee ngood to them. 'We couldn't afford this tour without them . "

Martin explains the group's attitude about their music byexample, "have you ever interviewed the Gang of Four" he asks? One of u snods . He goes on to criticize groups like the Gang of Four who use inter-views to espouse their political opinions and treat their songs as avehicle for political expression . . . 'not one government has ever beenchanged because of some group's lyrics . . . but what do they do with thei rmusic?' One of the boys add we do more by just giving people pleasurethrough entertainment than the Gang of Four or the Au Pairs do with thei rpolitics ." Yet if you examine the lyrics of Brian Brain's songs closelyyou will find elements of political thought fulness . . . apparently it' s

Vthe manner it's conveyed that's important to the group .

Brian Brain as individuals are very personable fellows . Thewhole time that we talked I felt that they were on stage to some degree . . .joking, telling stories and generally entertaining . They seemed to beenjoying themselves immensely . Pete Jones said that if he never did any -thing else in his life the last two years would satisfy him to death. The ywere warned not to come to Tampa . . . warned that it was to amateurish. . .things too easily messed up . . . they came anyways because they wanted thevacation. They came also as missionaries to spread the music to barbari clands . When we left they all got up and shook our hands and sincerel ythanked us for coming . They seemed mature for guys fairly young . . . out-wardly polite in contrast to the image of PIL who so often make sport o ftheir public contacts . . . and so until some other group or set of folk stake a chance the big time once again leaves Tampa .

he Shadow

by Adam KleinThs music of CABARET VOLTAIRE, THROBBING GRISTLE, and TUXEDO -

MOON have incorporated the intricate web of correspondence andassociation to attack more of, and at a purer level, the dualitiesthat so possess the spirit of contemporaries . As I have heardthese bands termed "Art Damage", I will assume that such termino-logy is derived through the dynamic form and structures of th emusic (this concern for form having, indeed, references to th enature of art) and though the fact that the music, generally, haslittle regard for the dance rhythmns that have become base in muchof the New Music, often its only means of propellation, pulse .There is no damage here, Certainly not to the art world .

What is most important to recognize about these bands is theirunspent vocabulary of the peripherals . CABARET VOLTAIRE's hollow ,sucking, vacuous sounds - sounds like the cracking of matches an dthe specific darknesses implied before the necessary "light" (thereare many darknesses for each band the way the eskimos have man ywords for "types" of snow) . THROBBING GRISTLE'S urban, synthetic ,industrial sounds - the hypertension, the menace, the conscience . . .and TUXEDOMOON's more linear expressions of isolation, nervousdespair as the mind questions its own control . The dreamlikequality of the music is often endowed with ironic or pathetic lyrichumor which, perhaps (if in quantity alone) seta TUXEDOMOON off fromthe other bands . The sound (often visual sound) correspondence s(juxtaposition and/or chance) create the tensions on which circum-stance (the drama) reveals itself full scale, with its emotive powercoming from the concretism inherent in musical form and the looseconjunction of uncertain sounds (which comprise the music) creatingsensory images far related . These images may be related throughcreative processes set in motion by the listener, or left alone ,accepted and appreciated as a pattern, or puzzle, of hybrids .

The discovery comes in the dynamic links, a world between thesensorial and mental processes best described in the "instances "of listening, often the same way in which we are surprised by suddenclarity in amassed thoughts in perios just before sleep . In similarperiods the rational linkage of thoughts is unecessary, certainlyunattainable in moments the bands describe, moments of exhaustedpossibility .

The night stretches on and on, you are further from slee pthan waking .

Seeing the many approaches of the unsettled, we have determinedtheir validity - sought the shadows, our dark shapes always behindus (erased by night when they are part of us and we must prowl) .The form of "Art Damage" is more assuming in its retirement of th ebinary musics of the past, the formulaic return, the Chorus . Inart damage melody and harmony are often inseparable, fragmentar yand without the functional aspects of composition . This, as ithas convinced us in the classical music of the 20th Century, has

given rise to the expressive, expansibe nature of our thinkin gand our feeling. And so, though the music has become more dif-ficult to tailor to our own shape (often I hear "yes, I like the mbut can't listen to them all the time"), the shadow becomes thick-er, endowed with its own processes of thought, its own moments ,tensions, releases - it is more than a shadow now - it is a soul ,a dark soul to be learnt by, to exchange with .

Music . Companion to man's consciousness . Freed by its un-conscious as man is freed from reality by the dreams, from thedream by waking .

Our worlds are interchanged . I see that there is a certain pointin form where we reach life . A certain point in life where wereach change . We have more than a shadow, more than the dream -we have an alter image comprised not just of circumstance but o freason.

Things become more clear . I almost see myself in everything .

SELECTED ALBUMS :CABARET VOLTAIRE : MIX UP (ROUGH TRADE )THROBBING GRISTLE : FUNERAL IN BERLIN (ZENSOR )TUXEDOMOON : HALF MUTE (RALPH )

"Mix Up" is Cabaret Voltaire's first album and probabl ytheir most successful in its transmitting the network of ques-tions behind experience, which the objective of the band was a tthis point . The band has maintained the same sound vocabulary(the sound of the static void) with some additions to it in late rworks . This is the best application, though . Many of the songsare narrative tales . "Fourth Shot" and "Photophobia" are excep-tional works on this album . The music is meshlike, hollow, in-finite and working around the mystery of the recited lyrics .

Throbbing Gristle's "Funeral in Berlin" is the last album bythe band before splitting up . It is their most accomplished workcompositionally . Hot on the heels of "Can the Wort. Be As Sad A sIt Seems" in its unrelenting horror show vision, the fogged awa yguitar working a frenetic backdrop for the howls of Genesis P .

-Orrige or the destructive innocence of Cosey Fanny . This is theirmost anarchic in form . Full of foreign elements, comments on com-ments .

Tuxedomoon's first album on Ralph records after some evolutio-nary singles with and without Winston Tong ."Half Mute" deals withinteriors, space . Motive, rhythmic blend of synthesizer, electro-nic percusiion, electric violin and saxaphone . Internal confron-tation, loneliness, fear, all a part of the "mood" music . Cohe-sive elements found in repetitions and gradual change (found inworks of Phil Glass and Steve Reich) . Texture is thick but clean-er than the albums of Cabaret Voltaire or Throbbing Gristle .

A-LIVEBAD BRAINS THROBS (CRUCIAL TRUTH) ,BLOOD CLOTS at MISS LUCKEYS, TAMPA,JAN. 15--. Three hundred miles toTampa- I figured something had tofuck up. Sure I'm a pessimist but I' malso seldom dissapointed . Would i tbe worth it? Well 20 hours later, th eanswer was of course ; yes, Yes, YES !Although the crowd was rather smallthe Bad Brains gave it their best ,opening up with a shreiking blas tof sound that threatened to attackthe walls of the club. Offstage H .R .was quiet and withdrawn but UP THEREhe was all motion ; screaming andpleading, skankin' to the spasti crhythm, challenging the audience .Inbetween the fast stuff they work-ed in 3 or 4 slower reggae jam sgiving everyone a chance to cool out .Although their reggae was very goodtheir hardcore stuff was the rea lattraction ; a violent blend of over-kill and volume that left me phys-ically and emotionally drained . Whatelse can I say . . . . an incredibl eshow! The Throbs (now known as Crucia lTruth) and the Blood Clots (someroadies plus a Throb) opened thingsup . The Throbs played their usual setof fast and furious hardcore . TheBlood Clots had only been togetherfor 2 days and even tneagh their so twas brief they kept up the momen-tium of the other two bands . (BOZ )

Monkey Farm began the firs tset of their second ever gig at 1 1PM in an establishment that is theclosest Coral Way will likley eve rget to a juke joint . Although th eclub's patrons were predominetl ygay the atmosphere was extremelycomfortable for anyone . Just as wel las it happens, cause the initialbursts of music obviously too kparts of the audience by suprise .Those listening who had neverheard anything outside the bound sof straight disco were a littleshocked by the band's cross cutsaw funk . The songs are all rhythm ,but harder and noticeably moreprimitive sounding than the glossysyncopation heard all over theradio today . Monkey Farm playedall original material except forChris Kenner's 'Land of 1000 Dances° .The first set suffered from ba dsound, but after a break, the bandreturned and gave an inspired per-formance . Visually they were hap-pening too . Darla, late of the Hay-heads, effortlessley mixing grac eand abandon in her dancing andvocals, her brother James played alot of vehement rhythm guitar wit hthe occasional spider and fly solo .Drummer John Galway and JohnnySalton on bass upped the stakes ontheir already considerable talen tand David Hill played tenor sax withan elegant gusto which unfortunetly ,never always got a fair shake fro mthe sound system. A great night ,nontheless . Now, hopefully th eband will persevere with keepingtheir act fresh, finding gigs, andwill radiate as good a feeling asthey did this time . (Frankie Twist)

The Bad Brain sare a talented bunch, whose musical abilities range from the fastes tthrash to outstandin g; reggae . Heart Attack have a 3 song EP out calle d"God is Dead" on Damaged Goods Records . It's fast and energetic, to ohad only 300 were printed . They put on a great show live, despite lengthydrum intros . Reagan Youth are loud, fast and chaotic . Worth seeing ,songs include :'Reagan Youth", "U .S .A .", and "New Order No Order Disorder" .The Undead are off Plan-9 Records so their EP will be delayed . The Misfitswill be putting out an LP soon which will he worth looking forward to .Their last gig was at Hitsville in N .J . with The Necros (great band fro mOhio) and Black Flag who did a suprise set . An incredible show . EvenWorse to put out an EP on Damaged Goods Records for all of you who care .Beasty Boys broke up . Kraut have a new EP which is much better than thei rfirst . The Misguided I haven't seen yet but heard they're good . As forclubs Max's and The Playroom both closed down . CBGB's is pretty sleaz ybut have or had a great sound system . Their equipment was unfortunetl ystolen recently . The Mudd Club likes to charge lot's of money like sa y$8-410 a show . Five dollars before 10 :00- generous aren't they? Thesound sucks anyway . The Peppermint Lounge is roomy with 2 levels and plent yof video screens . A-7 is a small shithole . The Ritz is a large shithole .

TEXAS : At the moment the best Texas bands are coming from Houston . Althoughurn has a bigger scene in the way of bands and audience, the Houston

scene is more stable with better clubs (the Island) and a pretty goo dradio situation . The best Houston band is The Hates, a three piece whoplay a cerebral slower brand of hardcore if you can make any sense outof that . They have three great 4 song EP's available (4200 W 34th, Box 132 ,Houston, 77092) . Another great Houston band is The VastMajority, whoplay a kind of nihilistic drunk rock . I think I like this band as much a sThe Hates, but for different reasons . Heavy influences of 60's garage rock ,but totally punk . They have a 3 song EP out . AK-47 have a single calle dThe Badge Means You Suck" (about the HPD) that's really good . Austin has

one really great band, The M .D.C . Stains . They play hardcore in more of aL .A . tradition, fast and furious . They have an excellent single, "John Wayn eWas A Nazi', which you must get or they will eat your cat (2913 A Pearl St . ,Austin 78705) . They've played around alot, including a few trips t oCalifornia where they've played with Black Flag and others . The Dicks arereally good too and have out an EP . The Big Boys have available a single ,half a 12'(the other half is The Dicks), and an LP, "Industry Standard" .Meanwhile, I'm trying to get together a C-60 cassette of Texas punk, wit hThe Hates and others . I'm not sure when it'll be available, but I'm tryin gto get it out before all these bands break up . Still trying to find band sto fill it . (Robin Radical) Editor's Note : Robin puts out a neat fanzin ecalled New Musical Excess (3118-43rd St ., Lubbock, 79413), good regiona lcoverage on American hardcore bands .

It's a moody work thatreflects the pain and hurt we at time sdesire . Quiet but moving, ACR use therhythmic base of funk to explore newpossibilities . The mix is a real ey eopener ; the busy bass and percussionare prominent but never overbearin gand help create a trance- like mood .Intimate and personal, the cal mresonance of the vocals extend thesubliminal hurt . The firs tMinor Threat BP is excellent D .C .hardcore but "In My Eyes" come sclose to transcending that genreentirelly . They take everything tothe extreme ; the accelerated tempos ,the quick stop and go time changes ,the crazed guitar work . . . a scream-ing mad wall of noise . It seems morethan a coincidence that the lates tDead Kennedys takes a simila rapproach . Jello's been obviouslyinfluenced by the D .C . sound . TheTeen Idles were an early version o fMinor Threat (well they had 2 o fthe same guys) and are worthwhile ;a glimpse of greater things to com eperhaps . Government Issue and th eYouth Brigade are more straigh tforward, not quite as frantic, an dnot quite as essential as the others .If these EP's are any indication ,D .C . might possibly have the besthardcore scene in America today . sleeve that's as inconvenient as i tis clever-things going in all direc-tions that folds into one tidy coverthat's impossible to get the recordout of . The A-side isn't much dif-ferent with its odd,vaguely India nsounding textures and rhythmns mesh-ing into a hooky sing-song chorus .It works,really . On the flip,'TissueTigers(the Arguers)" is straightfor-ward XTC(is that a contradiction? )pop that could have been an A-side a swell,and Colin Mouldingb time "BlameThe Weather"is amiable enough listen-ing fare,but I can't remember what itsounds like .

PYLON 'M-TRAIN"/"CRAZY' (DB7 ' )---From the cover (featuring a pris msticker of a jumping fish . . .you knowthat kind that are usually plastere don trucks) to Vanessa's wild voic ethis is a neat single . Pylon seem sto be more accessible,without losingany of their mystery . They still soun dspooky and dangerous . 'M-Train'feature sVanessa providing the woo-oo of a traingone almost out of control . 'Crazy 'sounds like a lively dirge of a menta lpatient about to give up and give into her illness . This is another quali-ty record from DB recs, a label to besupported!

Wel lI'm not sure what that means but theCigarettes do bear some resemblence t oPere Ubu back in their early days .Good forceful funked up tunes and asquealing sax on "Mr. Morse" mak ethis worthwhile . oes is a mini-epic, an anthemof one sort or another. Last year' s'Nero" sounded like it was made inHell but 'Westworld' reminds me o fuhh . . . . cowboys . Theme music for amodern day western? Perhaps . ActuallyI can never seem to make out whatKirk is singing (not that it reallymatters) so I'll have to assumeinstead. Really terrific though, afaster tempo reminiscent of earl ySkids but delivered with that poison-ous spite . Love their sax player-almost unhuman emotions in his play-ing . I bet they're great live . Just the word chills the heartsof most women and here's a whole son gabout one woman's experience . The mu•sic sets the scene,weavee in and ou tof the story line punctuating th ewords and actions,and sadly trails offat t end/ Rhoda has a fine voice . Sheplays the parts of the woman and man ,piping high for the first and growl-ing low for the second . The specialA .K .A .(what is left of the originalspecials)support the words with ex-cellent musicianship . This is not asingle for everyone . It's very dis-turbing because it reminds us thatrape is a crime of brutal violence .This well crafted single is highl yrecommended .
