1. Introduction.
Typing “success” into Google returns 799,000,000 results, typing in “failure” returns a
mere 351,000,000 which suggests that success is more popular than failure – which is a
good start…
Everyone, it seems, wants to achieve the perfect life which we have been conditioned to
believe includes the following;
a. Not working whilst earning a passive income.
b. The perfect physique, including great teeth and 20:20 vision
c. Fabulous houses, cars, yacht & helicopter
d. Trophy partner
e. Perfect family and circle of “successful” friends
f. Wisdom that apparently only comes from being successful
Not only does everyone want to be successful, they want it now, so a whole industry of Self
Help, Shelf Help, Investment Clubs and Coaching Programs has grown to provide a variety
of “proven methods” to achieve the success we want so much.
To be successful there are the following materials that can help, just type into Google to
take a closer look...
a. 13 Ways to turn defeat into success
b. 12 Steps to success
c. 11 Ways to make it big – careful with this one...
d. 10 Strategies for becoming Uncommonly successful
e. 9 Ways to achieve unrealistically realistic success
f. 8 Steps to becoming successful
g. 7 Habits of Highly Effective People
h. 6 Ways to become a winner in business
i. 5 Tips on becoming successful
j. 4 ways to becoming a success
k. 3 Simple Steps to becoming the best
l. 2 Ways to create your own luck
The list could go on, but you take my point – there have probably been more materials
produced on this subject than just about anything else – and yet success apparently
remains elusive to so many people.
Something is not working, if all the steps, habits and ways are correct – by now everyone
should be independently wealthy, happy and “successful”. There would be no poverty,
unemployment, welfare or crime. We wouldn‟t need the gated communities and doors
could be left unlocked.
Let‟s find out what is going on..

2. Where are we now..?
First let‟s take a look at the USA, the wealthiest country in the world, maybe excluding
Luxembourg and Lichtenstein.
The average wage for full time work in the USA was around $43,000 pa during 2010,
however, here‟s how the income is shared;
The top 1% of people earns 25% of all the income.
The top 20% of people earn 50% of the all the income.
15% of people are living in poverty and earn just 3.5% of all the income.
There is a trend that has been happening for decades, and that is that the gap between
the wealthy and the poor is widening; more money is being made by those at the top of the
pile, whilst those at the bottom are getting comparatively poorer.
Hardly surprising then that those who don‟t have the lifestyles of the rich and successful,
are willing to pay everything they have in order to learn how they did it so that they can
copy their activities and achieve the same results.
Globally the story is even more concerning, with just 1% of the population receiving as
much income as the bottom 60%.
Now, whilst there always has been and always will be those that have and those that have
less, it is this very disparity that is fuelling the growth in the Self Help industry – an
industry where fortunes can be made by telling others how to make a fortune.
What the industry doesn‟t tell you is that plenty of money is being made simply from
selling success programs – a bizarre cycle of self-fulfilment. If you want to get rich quick,
simply write a book on getting rich and tell people how you wrote your book and became
rich...
So my premise for this book is that the Self Help industry isn‟t working and that all the
models and concepts are invalid to the majority of people – if they worked they would have
by now, and we wouldn‟t be starting from here...
At the risk of simply adding another “model” the already crowded shelf of concepts and
recipes for success, I will propose an antidote to the get rich quick ideology that has failed
so many people. This may of course be uncomfortable for some; however, would you
rather we live in comfortable denial or uncomfortable but profitable enlightenment?

3. First the bad news…
There are some basic and some would say old fashioned principles that apply to the
achievement of success in life and in business.
1. You have to be prepared to work hard.
That‟s it – the only revolutionary principle that applies to any story of success and
achievement is that you have to be prepared to roll your sleeves up and get down and dirty
learning, making mistakes and adding value to your personal inventory.
This simple fact seems to be missing from many of the success guides, mainly because it is
too challenging – people simply don‟t want to hear that they need to work at their results.
They want to hear that success is the guaranteed outcome of the application of a sequence
of fail-safe steps, and of course, it is especially for those people producing the sequence of
fail-safe steps.
The second piece of bad news is that no one is going to do it for you – they are all too busy
doing it for themselves. Your success is your responsibility, you choose the script, you write
the screenplay, choose the cast, the plot and the sequel for the movie that is your life.
If you don‟t like the story, stop moaning about it and change the script. This is where it
can get really uncomfortable.
Just before I left school I attended a comedy program that was called “careers advice”. I
was told that given the economic situation, I had only two choices; I could either go down
the pit, or join the Army.
So I tore that script up and made a third choice – to leave everything I knew behind and
head south to find something better. Big choices when you‟re 16…
It got pretty tough, I was worse off after I made the move than I would have been if I had
stayed put. My mates were earning more than me in the Army or working down the Mine. I
was sleeping rough and eating at charity shelters getting to know the hookers and the
homeless of Kings Cross in London, getting home at weekends when I had the train fare.
One of the several “jobs” that I did was driving what was essentially a getaway car for a
“group” of debt collectors. My job was to keep the engine running and when all hell broke
loose, get them out of there quick…
You have not been given a script that you have to comply with, you have the ability to
make choices and changes, even if they are difficult – you always have a positive choice to
make, not making the choice is the surest way I know of sabotaging your future success.

4. The two steps to standing out and getting ahead
In 1988, when I was a young Technical Manager for a Packaging Company in the West
Midlands, I received a telephone call from the Chairman one Friday afternoon. He simply
said that he had a project for me, and asked would I be prepared to undertake it – I
immediately said yes.
The project was to fly to Dublin on Sunday Morning, head to the Burlington Hotel, pick up a
Menu from the Restaurant and be in his office at 09.00 on Monday Morning. I was also
allowed to have lunch there on expenses – all bribes gratefully accepted, perhaps I could
try the McDonald‟s in Dublin and add to my list..
So I booked a flight and arrived in Dublin at around 11.00 am – went to the Burlington
Hotel, had lunch grabbed a menu that was dated, even got the chef to sign it for me, and
caught the afternoon flight back to Birmingham, a flight of around 45 minutes. On the
Monday Morning I drove to Head Office and presented the Chairman with his copy of the
Burlington Hotel Sunday Lunch Menu as requested, and then headed back to Birmingham.
It turns out that my Chairman was impressing on a potential client why our logistics
services should be used in preference to those of our competitors. He had been given a
challenge, to give an unusual request to one of his team, which would be completed
successfully without question or hesitation, as a demonstration of the company‟s culture of
customer service. My Chairman chose me because he knew my background and that I would
do whatever it took to make things happen. We won the contract and I had a fantastic
career with the company. Out of all the people on his team, he „phoned me, because he
knew that I would “go the extra mile” and get the job done. I wasn‟t 10 times better than
anyone else, I was marginally better and it is what happens at the margins that can have
profound effects.
Step 1 – Say Yes
Everyone one of us has the opportunity to shine and capitalise on opportunities that are
presented to us. The challenge is not the opportunity it is whether or not we say yes and
capitalise on it. This doesn‟t mean that you should say yes to everything, but it does mean
you have to say yes to something.
The reason that I said yes to the challenge of going to Ireland was that I thought that if I
didn‟t I would get fired – and I wasn‟t going back to Kings Cross, I had looked over the
precipice and it was too scary. I wouldn‟t have been fired, someone else would have said
yes to do it and the project would have been completed.
I run a series of Free Seminars for entrepreneurs. We invite people to come along so I can
show them some of the ways they can build a better business make more money and enjoy
the journey. Each month we have around 15 people in the room and for two hours I teach
them some of the concepts and strategies that I have learned during my career during
which I have been to 41 countries, worked in 21 of them, including 15 States in the USA
and we have lived in three.
©Results Rules OK Ltd 2011 www.resultsrulesok.com 7
Do you think that in three hours maybe, they could learn just one idea that would help
them..?
We send out 2,500 emails in order to get 20 people to sign up which means that 0.8% of
people say yes to this opportunity, and 99.2% either ignore it or say no. Just by saying yes,
not just to an invitation to one of my seminars, but to just about any opportunity puts you
in the top 0.8% of people immediately.
The reason that people who attend workshops and seminars get a better result, isn‟t just a
consequence the content of the seminar that they attend, it is as a result of the mind-set
they have that enables them to say yes to attending at all and the attitude they bring with
them to the event.
I was invited to speak at an event in Romania so as a team; we thought about it and
considered the pros and cons of attending. Did it fit our Vision and Mission, would we get a
return on the investment?
Logically we should have declined the invitation; however, we said yes and agreed to
attend, making the journey into an 8 country tour, driving 3,000km in total.
We met some great people, I learned about business in the emerging markets and how we
could be involved, we had fun and came back richer for the experience.
During one of my presentations I was explaining some of the key concepts out of my book
Your Business Rules OK, and taking questions from the audience when one person stood up
and walked out of the room. He went to find Lynn and said “David has just got a new client
– me…”
We went to Romania without any expectation of finding clients, which is why it was not
the logical choice, but if we hadn‟t been there we would not have had the opportunity to
work with a new client. Sometimes your results will come from the most unexpected
places – just make sure you say yes to being in unexpected places.
©Results Rules OK Ltd 2011 www.resultsrulesok.com 8
Step 2 – Show Up
It is one thing simply saying yes to something, it is something else to follow through and
actually show up. From the 20 people that say they will come to our seminar for example,
we know that 25% will just not show up, so from 2,500 emails we get 15 people attending.
This means that just 0.6% of people will say yes and actually show up.
Can you see now why 1% of people in the USA earn 25% of all the income – not because
they are any brighter than the 99%, some of the silliest people I know are also the
wealthiest, but because I can guarantee that they took their chances and said yes to
opportunities and then they followed through and showed up with passion and energy to
make it work.
It doesn‟t matter whether it is a social function, a business event, a meeting of friends, a
wedding or a funeral – if you say you will be somewhere, be there.
My Dad died in August 2010 at 5.00 am on the day after his 80th Birthday. I was in
Barcelona when the hospital called me and said that if I wanted to say goodbye I needed to
get to the UK quickly. That was at 4pm on the day before. The planes were all full and the
trains were a nightmare – so I elected to drive from Barcelona to Telford, I was determined
to show up.
I was driving a Ford Expedition on Las Vegas plates so filling up with fuel would be a
regular event on the journey as she only does 20mpg. At the first service area just outside
Barcelona there were two teenagers hitching a ride – one approached me and said “we are
Dutch and need a ride, can you help us?”
I said “I‟m Dutch too – where are you heading?” (My nickname has been Dutch for as long as
I can remember) He said that they were trying to get to Oxford in England…
I said that I would take them all the way to the services on the M40 close to Oxford if they
promised to keep me awake as I drove – I didn‟t tell them why I was dashing back to the
UK...
The distance from Barcelona to Telford is around 825 miles including crossing the English
Channel – we used the tunnel for that bit...
My Dad died 1 ½ hours before I made it to Telford – I didn‟t show up…
I tried, but trying doesn‟t achieve anything.
©Results Rules OK Ltd 2011 www.resultsrulesok.com 9
Showing up means more than just putting in an appearance, it means being truly present,
applying all your knowledge and passion to complete the task, learn the lessons or build
the relationship. When the real YOU shows up, so will your results and levels of success you
achieve.
So you can choose to use all the lists, techniques and concepts that are available, but if
you don‟t Say Yes, Show up and put in the Work – I can guarantee that you will not achieve
the success you both desire and deserve.
Finally – I dare you to email me...
Remember, only 0.8% of people say Yes, so if you email me that is a great start, let me
know what you think and see if we can help – only one way to find out…
Better still I double dare you to go to our website and register to come to one of our events
and explore the possibilities.
Or better still, go for Gold and actually Show Up to an event as well – you never know
what opportunities could appear...
I look forwards to hearing from you and meeting you to thank you personally for taking the
time to read this E Book…
