Previous HistorySummit Refrigeration Products started in 1949 and rose to become one of the most successful refrigeration manufacturers in Australia employing over 140 people. Summit specialised in manufacturing refrigeration compressors (hermetic, semi-hermetic, belt driven) process chillers (brine, glycol, water), water chillers (air cooled, water cooled) and as an offshoot was one of the first companies in Australia to manufacture and distribute water coolers and bottled water. Summit Refrigeration Products was ISO 9001 certified and these quality procedures are used at Summit Matsu Chilling Systems. Key StaffDaniel Rollston (Sales and Marketing) developed the current manufacturing company with Bruce Larter in 2004. Daniel’s experience in business development has seen the company grow by finding niche markets, manufacturing products for those niches, and then scaling manufacturing operations as these products are pushed out to a larger customer base. It is this methodology that has seen the company expand from an industrial focus to air conditioning and mechanical services customers.

Page 31: Successful Chiller Projects

Key StaffBruce Larter (Chief Engineer) owned and ran Summit Refrigeration Products prior to Summit Matsu Chilling Systems and has 45 years manufacturing experience. Bruce’s current role is mentor for research and development and assembly.  Scott Rollston (Mechanical Engineer) started with the company in 2005 as understudy for Bruce Larter. Scott controls production and commissioning of water chillers in Australia and abroad is involved in future product design and in expanding the service and maintenance business. Other StaffSummit Matsu Chillers is proud of recruiting and keeping talented tradespeople in the fields of sheet metal, refrigeration, electrical and plumbing as well as degree qualified Mechanical and Electrical Engineers.

Project Overview:The containerised super computer was supplied by Hewlett Packard and run/owned by iVEC, a joint venture between the CSIRO, Edith Cowan University, The University of Western Australia, Murdoch University and supported by the Western Australian Government. It is being used to support the state’s $80 million Pawsey Centre, which was established in 2009 to host high performance computing facilities such as genetic research and Square Kilometre Array Telescope research. A reliable and high quality cooling system was required.

Design Brief:

A 20,000L insulated tank was required to be kept at -10 degrees celsius. Chilled liquid pumps then distribute the chilled fluid to multiple plant locations that have different cooling requirements.

100% redundancy required on all components.

Environment:Remote Northern Victorian Location.Extremes of both hot and cold.

Solution:2 x750kW air cooled chillers were supplied with fluid outlet temperature at -15 degrees Celsius. The chiller pipework was designed to chilled fluid to circulate through the idle chiller at all times to prevent thermal shock on start up.

Multiple panel P2C’s were used to modulate compressor capacity and fans based on ambient air temperature requirements.

Cupro-nickel evaporators were selected to cope with the corrosive Calcium Chloride mixture required to run at -15 degrees celsius fluid temperature.

Case Study 6 – VerbIT Data Center

Project Overview:VerbIT provides corporate grade IT services to small and medium businesses, as well as Enterprise customers. With a recent expansion to services VerbIT installed the first Hewlett Packard POD (Performance Optimised Datacentre) in Australia. The new data centre on in Wyong, on the NSW central coast, was constructed using the HP containerised data centre together with chillers, water pumps, buffer tanks, UPS, generators and CRAC units.

Design Brief:A chiller system was required that offered entry level sized chillers, pumps, and a thermal buffer tank. Full redundancy was required so that in the event of a single component failure the system would continue to operate. Because of their business park location the system footprint was required to be small, and a modular design was preferred to allow for future expansion.

Environment:Warm and humid to cold and wet conditions.

Chiller units during construction.

Page 47: Successful Chiller Projects

Solution:2 x high efficiency air cooled chillers were supplied on a common skid. The modular design allowed for completely independent circuits for both the refrigeration and water systems. Separate mains/UPS power connections allowed for uninterrupted controller operation in the even of chiller failure. Controls supplied included MODBUS High Level Interface. A pump and tank was supplied on a separate skid to allow flexibility of installation, with the controls on the pumps linked to chillers on a read/log arrangement to equalise long term run hours.
