Camponotus mollosus “Turret ants” (my common name)

All black ant; Single entrance raised tube above ground.

Rhytidoponera (No common name I’m aware of!)

Some species have a blueish-greenish metallic sheen

Similar to the “sugar ants” nest mound but is a little smaller. Ants themselves look black and quite a

bit smaller.

Meat ants, Iridomyrmex purpureus

Large gravel mound, generally likes open areas, but will find in woodlands, in clearings that catch

plenty of sun.

Aphaenogaster sp., (No common name I’m aware of!)

This species seems to like lightish to sandy soils. Almost always lots of entrance holes close together.

Ant inhabitants small, light brown almost transparent.

Myrmecia genus- “Bull ants”

“Jack Jumper), Myrmecia pilosula; a small dull black ant with yellow mandibles

Small mound often conical in shape, have a preference for covering the mound with stone fragments

but can be covered with small stick fragments and gum nuts when stone is now available.

Myrmecia- Large bull ants

Myrmecia forficata; large all black looking bull-ant; often accumulates fragments of leaf litter on

active part of mound.

Grey box forest with poa understory

In a forest situation with plenty of fallen branches, will often find mounds under, or adjacent to

fallen branches.
