Teaching PointSee video upload on the GKR and Auto the Octopus strategies on Dojo’s Class Story from weeks 2 and 3.Select ‘Brownilocks and the three bowls of cornflakes’ by Enid Richemont from Epic. DO NOT READ THIS BOOK TODAY FOLLOW THE STEPS BELOW.1. Look at the front cover of the book and

discuss the title and picture. What do you see? Predict what you think the story will be about.

2. Complete a picture walk and find words you know as you go.

ActivitiesStudents to complete the same activity as above but with a levelled reader that they haven’t read.Listen to your child read the book.Students to write a different word from each page that they can automatically recognise into their Café or ABC Book.

Upload a photo of last week’s Home Reading Journal page to your child’s Portfolio.

Teaching PointHandwriting- how to correctly form the lowercase and capital ‘Ll’.

Lowercase ‘ l ’ 1. Always start on the second dotted line.2. Go straight down until you hit the solid

line and exit.3. Have the students say, “Down and exit”

each time they practise writing this letter.

Capital ‘L’ 1. Always start at the second dotted line.2. Go down until you hit the solid line, then

go across to your right.3. Have the students say, “Down and across”

each time they practise writing this letter.

ActivityComplete pages 4 & 5 in the Handwriting book.

Extra Activity- practice writing your ‘Ll’ in your writing book, placing letters on the correct lines. See example below.

Teaching PointBecoming familiar with the sounds ‘l’ as in ‘lizard’ and ‘ll’ as in ball. Sound Waves Unit 14.

Activity1. Sing the Sound Waves song and do

the actions (see instructions below for where to find this).

2. Write down as many words as you can where you hear the ‘l’ or ‘ll’ sound in your Spelling or ABC Book.Extra Activity- draw pictures to match the words.

3. Complete the segmenting activity online. Students first say the sounds in the word and put in number of sounds. They then type in the letter/s they hear in that sound (see instructions below on how to access this). If you cannot segment online, have students copy segmenting sheet from resources below.

Teaching PointStudents are learning about doubles facts.

Activity1. Explain to the students that a double

is adding the same number to itself. For example, the double of 2 is 2 + 2 = 4.

2. Have the students complete a ‘Doubles Facts’ poster up to double 10 in their 123 Book. Refer to the poster example below to see how it is to be set out in students’ books.

If your child is having trouble, get concrete materials out so that they can make the double to find their answer.

If students are finding this easy they can find doubles beyond 10 and include them on their poster (Don’t bother going higher than 20).

*If your child is struggling with any of the tasks, you can try to simplify them or contact your child’s teacher for suggestions.*

Tuesday 19th May - Week Six, Term Two - Remote Learning & Activities Planner - Literacy and MathematicsReading Writing Sound Waves Maths

Teaching PointSee video upload on this strategy Spinner the Spider. Text to text connections.Text to Text connections – These are connections made between two books.

Activity1. Read yesterday’s text ‘Brownilocks

and the three bowls of cornflakes’ by Enid Richemont on Epic.

2. Ask your child if there is another story that this reminds them of.

3. Using the Text to Text resource (see below) have your child draw a colourful picture and write a sentence to explain a part of the story that reminds them of another story.

Listen to your child read a levelled reader.

Teaching PointWrite the orientation of a narrative (story).

Each day you will focus on a different part of a narrative so that by the end of the week your child has written a full story

Orientation is the setting of the story and includes who, when and where it begins. Use the Narrative poster below and video from Class Story to help explain the orientation.

Activity1. Have a look at the ‘Dog Prompt’ (in the

resources below). Explain that they will be writing a story about a dog this week. Talk about the orientation, where could the dog be? What could it be doing? When was this happening?

2. Have the students verbalise all of this into a clear paragraph (2-3) sentences.

3. Then explain that what they are saying is what they will write (if you can think it you can say it, if you can say it you can write it).

You write down what the students have said and get them to copy this into their writing books. At school, we have the students copy the story we create together the first time we introduce a new text type. They would have been exposed to narratives in Prep.

Activity1. Complete question 5 on page 33

focusing on using ‘l’, ‘ll’ or ‘L’2. Then complete the rest of the tasks

on page 33.

Teaching PointRevising doubles facts.

Activity1. Revisit the student’s double poster

from the previous day and say the various doubles they have on their page and the answer.

2. Then show the students the Ladybird Doubles sheet (in the resources below) and have them place the same amount of dots (doubles) on each side of the ladybird.

3. Students then work out the total amount of dots and write the answer to each equation underneath.

If students are finding this too easy they can create their own ladybird with more dots, ensuring they write the full equation below.

Wednesday 20th May - Week Six, Term Two - Remote Learning & Activities Planner - Literacy and MathematicsReading Writing Sound Waves Mathematics

Teaching PointPinky Flamingo focuses on noticing punctuation so that when reading aloud we alter our voice to add expression.

Activity1. On Epic! Listen to the audio reading of

‘The Three Billy Goats Gruff by Rebecca Hu-Van Wright’ (from last week). Focus on listening to how the reader alters his voice according to the punctuation and the size of the writing.

Listen to your child read a levelled book, ensuring they focus on punctuation, such as talking marks, so they can try to use an expressive voice that is different for each of the characters.

Teaching PointWriting the body of a narrative (story).

The body includes events and involves the character in a problem (complication). Use the Narrative poster below and video from Class Story to help write the body of the story.

Activity1. Re-read what they had written the day

before.2. Talk about a problem that the dog

could have in the setting you have put the dog in e.g. if the setting for the dog is at the park, what possible problem could the dog encounter?- Has it lost it’s ball?- Is there another dog at the park it

hasn’t seen before?- Has someone stolen something

from it’s owner?3. Choose a problem and like yesterday,

have your child verbalise the problem into a paragraph or two (2-3 sentences for each paragraph).

4. Write down what your child has said and then have them copy this into their Writing book.

ActivityStudents to complete page 32 of their Sound Waves book.

Teaching PointStudents are learning about doubles facts.

Activity1. Re-visit what the students know

about doubles from the previous days. Ask questions such as: what is a double? Tell me some doubles facts that you know?

2. Show the students the ‘Doubles Aren’t Trouble’ game board (see resources below) and explain to them that today they will be playing this game. Each person takes turn to roll a die and you need to double the amount shown on the die. You then place your coloured counter (or object) on the answer for that double. The person who wins is the one who covers a complete column or row first.

If you are looking for a challenge, create your own board with numbers to 20 and play the game flipping cards in a numbered deck.

Thursday 21st May - Week Six, Term Two - Remote Learning & Activities Planner - Literacy and MathematicsReading Writing Sound Waves Mathematics

Teaching PointExtending vocabulary by finding unfamiliar words within a text.

Activity1. Choose a picture story from your

bookshelf at home.2. Read together with your child and

choose at least four interesting or unknown words and discuss what they mean.

3. In your child’s Café or Writing book write each word and the possible meaning.

Listen to your child read a reader, and if necessary discuss any unfamiliar words.

Teaching PointWrite the solution and ending to their narrative (story).

Refer to Tuesday’s Narrative poster and video from Class Story to explain and show the students how to write a solution and ending.

Activity1. Again, re-read what they have written so far

and explain that today we are going to write a solution and ending to the story.

2. Again talk about the possible solutions that the dog could use to solve the problem e.g.- He looked in different places in the park to

find his ball and then he remembered that his owner had it in his/her pocket.

- The dog went up and asked the other dog to play and they went off to play fetch together.

- The dog chased the person who had stolen from its owner through the town and cornered them.

3. Write down whatever has been verbalised by your child.

4. Think about how the story can end e.g. a moral or lesson learned etc.- The dog played fetch with his owner.- The dog realised that not all dogs are

mean.- The dog took the robber to the police and

then returned the items to his owner.5. Again write down what the child has

verbalised.6. Have your child copy down the solution and

ending you have written for them. They can then draw a picture to match their story.

ActivityComplete the ‘Column Challenge’ (see resources below). Read the example and have students use list words from their Sound Waves book to write one sentence containing all four words (correctly spelled of course).

Teaching PointStudents are learning about near doubles and will only be focusing on double plus 1.

Near doubles are numbers that come either one before or one after a double number e.g. if you were trying to work out was 3+4=?, you would double 3 to make 6 and add one more to get your answer 7.

Activity1. Together, watch the video explanation

of Near Doubles that was posted to on Dojo the Class Story.

2. Then have the students complete the Doubles Plus One Dice Roll sheet (see resources below). If you do not have a printed copy of this page simply transfer the layout of the sheet into your child’s 123 Book for them to complete.

Friday 22nd May - Week Six, Term Two - Remote Learning & Activities Planner - Literacy and MathematicsReading Writing Sound Waves Mathematics

Teaching PointUse the reading strategy Tryin’ Lion to read unfamiliar words accurately.

Tryin’ Lion is where the student will try a different word that makes sense when they have are unable to solve a particularly challenging word.

ActivityFree choice Friday – Students select any book to read and practise trying a different word that makes sense, if they do not know a word.

Teaching PointPublish completed narratives (stories).

See example on Class Story of how a student’s Narrative could be published.

ActivityStudents can use their preferred method to publish and illustrate their story e.g. type on a word document, create a PowerPoint, make a book that includes a front cover OR re-write their piece into their Writing book making sure they have neat handwriting, borders and picture/s.

Instead of uploading your published narrative please bring it to school next week to share with the class.

Spelling TestTest the students on their spelling words from their spelling booklet and submit a photo of the corrected test to your child’s Portfolio on Dojo.

Extra Activity- Students can again go online and play interactive games and activities from Unit 14 on the Sound Waves website. It may be beneficial to play these games before completing the test, as it will give students one last chance to familiarise themselves with their list words.

As a bit of a change for today we would like the kids to play ‘Speedway’.

How to play Speedway- watch the video previously posted to the Class Story on how to play Speedway, if necessary.

It is very important that the students are verbalising the running total. To make it more challenging add an extra card, ensuring you and your child know the new total they will be playing to (if adding) or starting from (if playing subtraction Speedway).

If your child uses the cards 1 to 5 – the total will always be 15.If you child uses the cards 1 to 6 – the total will always be 21.If your child uses the cards 1 to 7 – the total will always be 28.If your child uses the cards 1 to 8 – the total will always be 36.If your child uses the cards 1 to 9 – the total will always be 45.If your child uses the cards 1 to 10 – the total will always be 55.

WELLBEINGGrowth Mindset – During the week teachers will post episode 3, The Power of Yet, where Katie realizes she can learn new things, too, and that she can ask others for help! This 5 part series highlights the power of having a growth mindset, and how any student can learn this skill! At some stage during the week please watch the video and discuss the following:

1. What should you do if you are stuck on a project, math problem, or other learning (teacher can choose a specific situation)?2. Think of a time you were afraid to ask for help. Why did you feel afraid?3. Why is the word "yet" so powerful? Think of a "yet" moment in your life and discuss it with your neighbour!

To reinforce this concept, over the next fortnight, parents might like to occasionally ask these questions:1. Name a time you were afraid to ask for help. Why were you afraid? (Both parent and student should pick a moment to share)2. How can you improve the phrase "I can't do this?”3. Think of a time where you just didn't get “it.” What could you do in that situation?

Kitchen Band – create instruments using pots and pans. Play along to the beat of a song, or make your own patterns. See how many different sounds you can make from your objects.

Make a shaker, drum or another instrument using recycled materials.

Perform a song for your friends or family. You can even record yourself if you have a device and watch it later!

Explore your house. What sounds do different rooms have? What sounds can you hear when you are very quiet in each room? Try to find ten sounds and write them down, or draw them.

Draw/paint a picture along to your favourite song.

Practice mindfulness while playing meditation music

Have a dance party. Make your own dance moves up to a whole song or look up a Just Dance video to move along with.

Play bobs and statues/musical chairs.

Learn a new song and have a sing along.

On paper, write a song together about tasks that the student does often. Sing the song while you do that task.e.g. Wash hands, pick up toys, make toast, get in pyjamas.

Find as many things in your house that you can that make a ___ing sound:buzz, ting, bang, scrape, ring, clink, sssshhhh, click, snap, rattle, tap, shake, crunch. Write them down together, or draw a picture of those things on a piece of paper with each sound word.

Follow the Leader - One leader and others follow. Leader does the actions (dance, move, sing etc) other participants follow.

Shazzam! - Same rules as rock, paper, scissors except you act out the characters - giants (stomping feet saying, “Fe, Fi, Fo, Fum), wizards (step forward and shoot a magic spell through your hands and shout “Shazzam.”) and knights (put out imaginary sword and shout, “En garde!”wizards beat giantsgiants beat wizardsknights slay giants.

Retell me a Story - Children draw/create their own finger or stick puppets for their favourite Nursery Rhyme, Fairy Tale or Picture Story Book. Use the puppets to retell the story. ie 3 Billy Goats Gruff, Goldilocks and the 3 Bears, Ipsy Wipsy Spider.

Dress Ups - provide some dress ups for children to role play.

Shoebox - think about different types of shoes worn by people in different occupations. ie ballerina, fireman etc). Take some imaginary shoes from a box and put them on. Act out the character. Others guess who you are. Reader’s Theatre/Play - Create your own play, skit, or reader’s theatre using a favourite book or movie.

Slow Mo - Act out scenes in “slow motion”. As an added touch, replay the scenes in “rewind”, “fast forward”, “super slow motion” and “instant replay.” i.e. Going fishing/doing the dishes/baking a cake.

Talent Shows - Let your kids strut their stuff in a planned performance of their talents. Throw in a host and a great time will be had by all. Or better still, create a family performance to your favourite song.
